France player ratings: How they rated in third-test defeat against All Blacks
Star of the first test in Dunedin, quietened in Wellington and seldom sighted in the Tron. Spent most of his evening scrambling about on defensive chores; on evidence of recent weeks, he's better on the front foot. 13.) Nolann Le Garrec – 8 Only Frenchman to start all three tests bagged a smart, cheeky try from eighth-minute lineout drive. The halfback was more effective and decisive than in previous showings on tour, his control and direction keeping heat on the ABs in first 40 minutes. 8.) Mickael Guillard – 8 The mini-dreads make him highly noticeable, as does the 6ft 4in frame. As in Dunedin, he was possibly the pick of the loosies on the field: a breakdown menace, up for physical confrontations, deft in his handling and all with a massive workrate. 7.) Joshua Brennan – 5 Irish-Gaul backed up from impressive debut in Wellington. In his move from lock to openside, the French possibly gave the ABs a bit of a headstart with Kirifi well-versed in the No 7 trade. 6.) Alexandre Fischer – 6 Playing his second test, big flanker made plenty of big hits which was pretty much all his teammates would have wanted from him. 5.) Matthias Halagahu – 6 At 1.94m, he might be a little short for an international lock, and the ABs certainly didn't seem threatened in the middle of the lineout. 4.) This was a good-old fashioned shift of piling into bodies on a night where the French front rowers had (and probably wanted) few opportunities to show their fancy handling skills. 1.) Six Nations team news: Penaud blow for France as Ntamack and Dupont return
France's Romain Ntamack is set to line up at fly-half for the first time in almost 18 months but the Six Nations favourites will be without the winger Damian Penaud for Friday night's opener against Wales, adding to a list of key players unavailable for the curtain-raiser at the Stade de France. Ntamack missed the 2023 World Cup with a knee injury and his planned comeback last November was curtailed by a calf injury, but he will reprise his highly rated combination with the returning captain Antoine Dupont. Penaud had been expected to return to the team but suffered a toe injury in training and Théo Attissogbé will line up on the wing instead. France are already without the veteran centre Gaël Fickou, the lock Thibaud Flament and the loose forward Charles Ollivon, with Fabien Galthié making five changes in total from the side who beat Argentina 37-23 in Paris in November. Ntamack's return pushes Thomas Ramos to full-back in place of Léo Barré while Pierre-Louis Barassi replaces Fickou in the midfield and Attissogbé takes Gabin Villiere's place on the wing. The former captain Grégory Alldritt returns to the back of the pack in place of Ollivon after being dropped before the win over Argentina while Alexandre Roumat is in for Flament. On the bench, Galthié has included Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, who made their debut in Argentina last year but were then arrested on rape charges that were later dropped. The two players, allowed to leave Argentina in September, always denied any wrongdoing and said the sex was consensual. Galthié refused to answer a question about their inclusion. But the return of Adams and Williams gives a more-experienced look to a Wales team that contains a combined total of 487 caps. Wales are on a record run of 12 successive Test defeats, while it is six losses in a row against France. Gatland said the mood among the players has been positive despite their horror 2024. 'They've been outstanding. There's been a good buzz around the group. They've been excellent. The next couple of days, it's about coaches taking a step back and allowing the players to lead.' On the return of Adams and Williams, the head coach said: 'Part of our thinking was bringing some experience back in and getting some balance in. Having a voice and getting some confidence to those around them.' Wales are hoping Taulupe Faletau will be fit for the match against Italy in Rome. The Wales No 8 had been expected to make his return after almost 16 months out of Test rugby on Friday, but Gatland says the 104-cap forward feels he is 'not quite ready' for selection. 'He made the call on Tuesday to say he is not quite ready for selection,. He is still part of the squad and he will still come with us. We are hoping he will be right for Italy [8 February].'
