USC falls outside top 25 of college football preseason AP Poll

USA Todaya day ago
If it was not already clear, the national expectations for USC football are not super high entering the 2025 college football season. Last week, the Trojans were not ranked in the preseason coaches poll for the first time since 2019. On Monday, the preseason AP Poll dropped, and once again USC did not make the top 25.
USC did receive 64 votes in the poll. That was the fifth-most among teams not ranked in the top 25. Ironically, just in front of them with 90 votes received was Louisville, who will be led by former USC quarterback Miller Moss this fall.
While the Trojans themselves, did not make the rankings, four of USC's 2025 opponents did. That group consists of No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Oregon, No. 12 Illinois, and No. 14 Michigan. A three-game stretch in late September/early October vs. the Illini, Wolverines, and Fighting Irish could very well determine the outcome of the Trojans' season.
USC is somewhat fortunate, however, in that they will avoid facing the two highest-ranked Big Ten teams in the preseason AP Poll: No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 Ohio State. In addition, the Trojans will not play No. 20 Indiana in 2025.
Of course, preseason polls—while fun and all—do not mean much of anything at the end of the day. If USC can win on the field this fall, the Trojans will quickly see themselves rise up the rankings.

Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches

Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly. OSU begins the defense of its national championship on Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Texas in the 'Shoe. Arch Manning's Viral Venmo Payments: Are They Just Fake Jokes?

Arch Manning's Viral Venmo Payments: Are They Just Fake Jokes? originally appeared on The Spun. Arch Manning's alleged Venmo payments are going viral on social media on Tuesday, in the wake of a gambling conspiracy surrounding an Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, but are they real? Almost certainly not. On Tuesday, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was accused of betting on sports, after screenshots of a "sports gambling" payment made on his Venmo account went viral. However, the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback has denied ever betting on college football, saying his payment was simply an inside joke between friends as a teenager. "The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false," Mateer posted to X on Tuesday. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. "I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling." Oklahoma, meanwhile, is taking this seriously, saying the school "takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situation of concern." However, the school said its "unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending." In the wake of Mateer's screenshots going viral, similar ones from Arch Manning have gone viral, as well. But they appear to be fake. Several alleged Venmo transactions from Arch Manning's account have gone viral on social media on Tuesday, but they are most certainly fake or just jokes. Fans are taking to social media to photoshop images in hopes of going viral, creating a similar controversy to the one featuring the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback. Manning, meanwhile, is simply focused on the 2025 season. Texas, ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Poll top 25, is expected to contend at the top of the SEC. "It means everything," Manning said at SEC Media Days. "I mean, my family has played in SEC, I grew up going to SEC games wanting to be a part of it. So now getting to represent at SEC media day, it's kind of a dream. I know I haven't done anything in the SEC yet, but that's the goal." Manning has been hyped a lot, but he's trying to simply focus on the games. "It's weird," Manning told ESPN. "I really haven't deserved any of this, so just trying to play along and play ball." Manning and Texas are scheduled to take on No. 3 Ohio State in the first game of the year on Saturday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. E.T. Paul Finebaum criticizes Ohio State ranking in preseason poll

During an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" Tuesday morning, college football analyst Paul Finebaum shared his biggest takeaway from the season's first AP Top 25 poll. His opinion was clear. Alabama is being underrated, and Ohio State is getting far too much credit. 'Don't be too shocked by this, Greeny, but Ohio State is too high. And, Heather, calm down, Alabama is too low,' Finebaum said. Ranked No. 8, Alabama sits lower than many expected, a placement Finebaum finds puzzling. He believes the Crimson Tide are legitimate College Football Playoff national championship contenders, especially following the announcement that Ty Simpson will be the starting quarterback this season. Simpson, now in his fourth year with the program, has served as the backup the past two seasons but has yet to start a game. That will change this fall. 'I really think Alabama is a serious national championship contender,' Finebaum emphasized. In contrast, Finebaum believes Ohio State, ranked No. 3, is being overhyped. He argued the Buckeyes are benefiting too much from last season's national championship and not being judged based on the current roster. 'I don't get Ohio State at all, Greeny. I know they won the national championship last year, but that has nothing to do with it,' Finebaum said. 'They don't have the same team, and that national championship hangover is going to catch up with them.' Finebaum went a step further and predicted that Ohio State's high ranking would be short-lived. He expects an early-season loss to top-ranked Texas. 'We'll see that in about two and a half weeks when Texas goes up there and walks out of that stadium a winner,' he added. ESPN's Heather Dinich agreed with Finebaum's assessment. 'He's right that Ohio State has a lot of questions and they're too high,' Dinich said. With the college football season just around the corner, Finebaum believes the AP Poll is already missing the mark on two of the sport's biggest programs.
