Exploding propane tanks fuel large fire at Pompano Beach hazardous waste drop-off site
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue said around 6 a.m. they received a report of an explosion at the facility on N Powerline Road near W Copans Road.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered several hundred propane tanks on fire or exploding in the facility's storage yard.
"Our crews faced an extremely dangerous situation with hundreds of pressurized propane tanks involved," Fire Chief Pete McGinnis said.
They immediately began an aerial attack and requested a second ladder truck. Using two water sources, they were able to contain the rapidly spreading fire.
The intense heat and threat of further explosions posed a serious risk to nearby hazardous materials storage units, so firefighters worked quickly to protect them.
"Their quick actions and coordinated response helped prevent a much more severe incident," McGinnis said.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Landmark church in Scottish town destroyed by fire
A landmark church in a Scottish town has been destroyed by fire. The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) was alerted to the fire at the B-listed St Mungo's Church in Cumbernauld around 7:30pm on Saturday. It mobilised seven fire appliances to the scene and specialist resources. SRFS confirmed to The Herald that fire crews remain at the scene on Sunday morning. There are no reports of any casualties. In a statement issued on Saturday evening, SFRS said: "Seven fire appliances and specialist resources are at the scene of a building fire on St Mungo's Road, Cumbernauld. We were alerted at 7.37pm tonight. "There are no reports of casualties. Local residents and businesses are advised to keep windows and doors closed at this time." Commenting on the blaze last night, Councillor Adam Smith, who represents Cumbernauld East, said: "Sadly this evening St Mungo's Church appears to have been destroyed by fire. "Emergency services have been in attendance for some time, including the ambulance service incident response unit, and what remains of the building is still on fire. "There is significant smoke coming from the site, blowing in the direction of Carbrain, and those living nearby should keep doors and windows closed. St Mungo's Road is currently closed and emergency services will be in attendance for some time. "The B-listed building was constructed in 1963 and is under the ownership of the Church of Scotland. Please avoid the area while the fire is ongoing." Meanwhile, Cumbernauld Community News posted: "Another significant fire in Cumbernauld this evening as St Mungo's Church is ablaze. "Due to the volume of smoke from the fire, we are advising people to avoid the area and for residents in nearby Cumbernauld Town Centre and in the Seafar area to, if possible, stay indoors and to keep your windows and doors closed until further notice. "Enquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing."

Woman injured, firefighters save cat from Northridge house fire
One person was injured and firefighters had to rescue a cat after a fire broke out at a home in Northridge on Saturday. The blaze was reported just before 2 p.m. in the 19000 block of W. Community Street near the 405 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters arrived to find smoke showing from the single-story home and flames burning outside of the building. It took them just about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, which had spread to the attic of the property. "One cat was rescued from the home and treated with oxygen on scene by paramedics," LAFD said in a news release. A woman, 19, was also treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, but firefighters said she did not require hospitalization. It's unclear what caused the fire.
