Delay in submitting seat matrix of professional courses to KEA may delay counselling

The Hindu7 days ago

Four days after the deadline to submit the seat matrix for various professional courses ended, no department, including the Higher Education Department, has submitted it to the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).
The seat matrix of professional courses, including engineering and others, is necessary for both the KEA and students at this stage after the Common Entrance Test (CET) results.
However, owing to the delay in submitting the seat matrix, there is a possibility that the counselling process will also be delayed this time.
'We need at least one week to upload the seat matrix after receiving the same from various departments. Unless we receive the seat matrix we cannot proceed further,' said H. Prasanna, executive director of KEA.
As per information from the KEA, the authorities have personally met officials of the Higher Education and the Medical Education departments requesting for seat matrix. 'Despite repeated requests there is no response from the departments,' an official of the KEA said.
For engineering courses, the Higher Education Department has to get the seat matrix from respective colleges and submit it to the KEA. For medical, dental and nursing it is the responsibility of the Medical Education Department.
Higher Education Department officials said they are compiling the data and submitting the same to the KEA soon. However, the medical, dental and nursing seat matrix will be delayed because the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) was under a dilemma following the directions from the Governor not to involve some of the senate members in any committees, including college inspection.

MBBS seats: After complaints, Karnataka Examinations Authority enhances scrutiny for disabled quota

Bengaluru: Following complaints about the genuineness of three students availing MBBS seats through the physically handicapped quota last year, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) decided to enhance the scrutiny process for the same. A complaint raised by Mithesh Kumar Moodukonaje of the National Pre-University Students, Parents, and Teachers Association alleged irregularities in the person-with-disabilities (PwD) category MBBS seat allotment in 2024. He raised issues about three cases. In one case, he alleged that the candidate did not declare any form of disability in his school records or class 11 admission form. In the other two cases, the candidates were not listed in the medical verification call list, yet were included in the final verified list. The complaint was sent to multiple agencies and authorities, including the National Medical Commission, the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), the governor, and the medical education minister. It sought the allotment of MBBS seats to the candidates to be put under scrutiny for compliance with norms laid down under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the NMC guidelines. "KEA published the PwD eligible candidates' list based on the doctor's certificates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo No one submitted objections at that time. However, we have requested DME to verify the complaint," said H Prasanna, executive director, KEA. "Two candidates went through KEA verification. One candidate approached the high court and got a second verification through a third party," he added. Meanwhile, KEA decided to enhance the scrutiny process for the category. Instead of the existing two, KEA requested DME to send at least four teams of doctors for the process. "We have asked for senior doctors to be present for the verification," said the executive director. While the vision testing is conducted at Minto Hospital, KEA also decided to shift the testing for the hearing impaired to a hospital. "There is advanced equipment in the hospital that cannot be made available in the KEA office. Only the locomotive category will be tested at the KEA office," he said. This year, 874 students are expected to come for the medical tests. Last year, 834 students claimed the quota. As many as 534 students attended the medical verification, and 331 were found eligible. The verification will be held from June 3 to 6.

CBSE students dominate KCET top ranks

Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar announced the results of the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) 2025 on Saturday, and students from Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) dominated the top ranks. Announcing the results at the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) office here on Saturday, the Minister said, 'One grace mark has been awarded in physics and biology, for one question, two answers have been considered. In chemistry, two answers for two questions were considered.' 'KEA is ready for counselling, but we will wait for the NEET results to be announced,' he added. In the engineering stream, of the top 10 rankers, seven were from CBSE and three from the State's Pre-University board. This was the same case in veterinary and BSc Nursing. In Pharma-D and B-Pharma, 8 toppers were from CBSE and two from State board colleges. In BSc (Agri), State students managed to secure the top nine ranks. In Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, five students from both the boards secured ranks in the top 10. Students who secured the top ten ranks in all the streams were from colleges either in Bengaluru or Mangaluru. Bhavesh Jayanthi, from Chaitanya Techno School, Marathahalli, Bengaluru, secured 99.06% and emerged as the topper in the engineering stream. Satwik B. Biradar, from Chaitanya Techno School. Uttarahalli. Bengaluru stood second with 98.83% and the third topper was Dhinesh Gomathi Shankar Arunachalam, also from Chaitanya Techno School, Marathahalli, with 98.67%. Harishraj D.V., who bagged first ranks in BVSc (Veterinary), Nursing, and Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Science (BNYS), was from Narayana E-Techno School, Yelahanka, Bengaluru. He also got sixth rank in BSc (Agriculture). In BSc (Agriculture), Akshay M. Hegde from Alva's PU college, Moodbidri, and Saish Sharavan Pandit and Suchith P. Prasad from Expert PU college, Mangaluru have secured first, second and third ranks respectively. Aathreya Venkatachalam is the topper in B-Pharma and Pharma-D course with 91.11% He secured second rank in Nursing and BNYS courses. Meanwhile, changing the trend, the boys managed to outshine girls by securing most top ranks. In all the streams, all the top ten ranks were bagged by boys except in BSc (Agri) where Sneha I. Yaraganavi secured rank 5. This year, a total of 2,75,677 students cleared CET: 2,62,195 in engineering stream, 1,98,679 for BNYS, 2,14,588 for BSc (Agri), 2,18,282 for BVSc, 2,66,256 for B-Pharma, 2,66,757 for Pharma-D, and 2,08,171 eligible for BSc Nursing course. Decreased eligibility Compared to the previous year, the number of students eligible for admission to engineering courses has reduced. In CET-2024, a total of 2.75 lakh students were eligible for engineering and this time the same has come down to 2,62,195. This trend is similar in all the other streams. Dr. Sudhakar said it is mainly because of the dip in science pass percentage in the II PUC exams. 'Compared to last year, the number of students cleared the II PUC science stream has witnessed a dip and that has impacted on the CET eligibility,' he stated. In 2024, as many as 2,46,744 cleared II PU Science stream in annual exam-1, but this year, that number has dipped to 2,31,461 in annual exam 1 and in annual exam-2, around 18000 cleared science stream, but not all registered for CET. Wrong entry by 10,000 students Despite creating awareness, at least 10,000 students have entered wrong data which delayed the results. For those who have not received their CET results because of errors in the entries, KEA will provide a link to upload the marks from May 26 and spot ranks will be issued to such students. Helpline Considering the increase in calls to the helpline and complaints about not addressing the calls properly, the KEA has extended the helpline from 8 am to 8 pm on all seven days, including holidays.
