The 20 best things to do on the Isle of Wight

Telegrapha day ago
The Isle of Wight caters for everyone. I speak from personal experience; I first visited as a child, then as a lover of wildlife and walking, good food and drink and latterly as a parent of young, then older children.
The island has excellent conventional attractions and does a fantastic job of interpreting its ancient and wartime history, as well as its relationship with the sea. In many ways, though, the great outdoors is the main event, and your best memories may well be of wandering along a beach and stumbling upon a fossil or spotting a red squirrel in a woodland.
All our recommendations below have been hand selected and tested by our destination expert to help you discover the best things to do on the Isle of Wight. Find out more below, or for more Isle of Wight inspiration, see our guides to its best hotels restaurants, bars and pubs, and beaches.

Osborne House
Discover Queen Victoria's 'little paradise'
Osborne House was where Queen Victoria was most amused, describing it as her 'little paradise'. Built in Italianate style and set among lawns edged by veteran oaks and yews, sumptuous state rooms and opulently furnished corridors are warmed by personal touches such as marble sculptures cast from moulds of plaster of limbs of the couple's children.
Insider tip: The attractive shingle beach behind the house is easily missed and on the way you will see the bathing machine – it brings to mind a cowboy's wagon – where Queen Victoria got changed before she took to the water.

M60 traffic: Warning for anyone heading to major UK airport as EIGHT lorries & cars crash with motorway completely shut

PASSENGERS have been issued an urgent warning if they're heading to a major UK airport today. It comes as the M60 in Greater Manchester has been closed in both directions following a multi-vehicle crash involving four lorries and four cars. The smash saw nine people injured and beer barrels strewn across the road. National Highways posted the warning on X, which read: "#M60 both directions between J25 and J1 near Stockport#Bredbury#GreaterManchester ROAD CLOSED Due to a multi-vehicle collision, spillage, shed load and infrastructure damage. Be aware if heading to/from @manairport." Traffic chaos was sparked after lorry broke through the central reservation, and struck several street lights. Ruptured fuel tanks were also reported in the collision, with diesel spilling onto the road on both sides of the carriageway. A section of the route between J25 Bredbury Interchange (A560) and J1 Pyramid Roundabout (A5145) is expected to remain closed in both directions for some time due to the amount of debris and the recovery of several badly damaged lorries. Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Fire & Rescue, North West Ambulance Service, National Highways traffic officers, and maintenance crews are at the scene. Fortunately, only minor injuries have been reported from the collision. North West Ambulance Service said three people were taken to hospital for treatment, and six were assessed at the scene for minor injuries. Traffic caught within the closure will be released in due course, with National Highways and Greater Manchester Police doing everything they can to speed up the process. A statement from National Highways said: "The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J25 Bredbury Interchange (Bredbury, A560) and J1 Pyramid Roundabout (Stockport (Cen), A5145) "This is due to a multi-vehicle collision involving 4 heavy goods vehicles and 4 cars. "One of the heavy goods vehicles has crossed through the central reservation barrier and struck several lamp columns in the process. One of the other heavy goods vehicles has shed its load of beer barrels in to the road. "Additionally there are several ruptured fuel tanks from the collision which have resulted in a large amount of diesel across the carriageway in both directions." 1 Like us on Facebook at and follow us from our main Twitter account at @TheSun.

TfL sells sponsorship rights for entire Tube line in multi-million pound branding deal

Transport for London (TfL) is selling the rights to an entire London Underground line in a bid to raise millions. In a post on the social media platform LinkedIn, TfL announced it was offering 'exclusive sponsorship' of the Waterloo and City line, which connects Bank and Waterloo stations. The two-stop, three-minute shuttle service, which is only open on weekdays, is London's least-used tube line, but still ferries around 15 million people each year. TfL said the opportunity to sponsor the line would not involve renaming it but would 'go far beyond a typical media opportunity'. They said the sponsorship would include 'full-line branding, from moquette seat fabric and signage to maps and experiential spaces'. 'Millions of professionals and decision-makers travel this route every year,' the advert read. 'Now, your brand can own the journey.' While this would be the first time an entire Tube line has been offered for sponsorship, several stations have been sponsored. Southgate station was temporarily renamed ' Gareth Southgate ' Tube station by Visa in honour of the then-England manager after the national team made the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup. The two-day takeover of the final stop on the Piccadilly line generated £80,000 for TfL. The sponsorship included branded roundels, themed Tannoy announcements, digital screen messages and flash mobs. A few years later, during London Fashion Week in October 2023, Bond Street was briefly renamed 'Burberry Street'. The name change led to 57 complaints to TfL as passengers complained about becoming confused by the mock Tube signs. Complaints were also made last year when Samsung renamed Old Street to 'Fold Street' to promote their new 'Fold and Flip' smartphone, generating £250,000 for TfL. The only time that a public transport line in London has been completely sponsored is the £2.1 million five-year IFS Cloud sponsorship of the cable car, which crosses the Thames between the Royal Docks and North Greenwich. The Waterloo and City line, however, boasts 10 times the number of annual users.
