NHRC issues notice to Odisha government over social boycott of tribal woman
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) issued a notice to the Odisha Government regarding the reported social boycott of a woman from a Scheduled Tribe community after her marriage to a man belonging to a Scheduled Caste.
The incident, which took place in Rayagada district, allegedly involved pressure from local villagers demanding that the woman's family undergo a 'purification' ritual in order to be accepted back into the community. Reports suggest that the family was threatened with an indefinite boycott if they refused to comply.
According to the complaint, the woman's family ultimately acquiesced to the villagers' demand. As part of the ritual, the heads of 40 family members were reportedly tonsured.
'The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of the human rights of the victims. Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Odisha, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks,' the NHRC said in an official communication.

Probe sought into dalit man's death in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Three days after a dalit man was found hanging from a tree with both hands tied with a rope at Sennakkalpalayam near Dharapuram, dalit organisations on Sunday condemned police for dismissing it as a suicide case and urged the district superintendent of police to conduct a fair probe into his death. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now K Murugan, 42, a daily wage labourer from Sennakkalpalayam, was found hanging from a tree in the locality on Thursday (June 26). When alerted, the Alangiyam police sent the body to the govt hospital at Dharapuram for postmortem. The body was handed over to his family members the next day, when it was cremated. Senior police officers said the postmortem findings did not indicate any sign of external force in Murugan's death. His family members also did not raise any suspicion over the death. Police subsequently registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Dalit activists, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Tamil Puligal Katchi and other dalit organisations on Sunday alleged foul play behind Murugan's death. V Govindaraj of Vizhuthugal, an organisation working for the welfare of people belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, said there was foul play behind Murugan's death. "We are planning to petition the district collector, seeking a proper inquiry into Murugan's death."

Porn, alcohol and lack of control in families: Madhya Pradesh DGP on increase in rapes; says police alone can't curb rapes
Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana said on Sunday (June 29, 2025) that the police force alone cannot curb rape incidents while claiming that various other factors, like pornography, internet and alcohol, are causing a decline in morality in society, leading to an increase in cases of sexual assault. Mr. Makwana made the remarks after holding a review meeting for Simhastha Kumbh Mela, slated to be held in 2028, with top officers in Ujjain. He went on to claim that earlier children used to listen to parents and teachers, and 'vulgarity is now being served on the internet'. 'The way pornography is being served on the internet, the minds of children are getting distorted. There are many reasons behind the increasing incidents of rape. I think it includes internet, mobile phones, availability of pornographic material and alcohol. Today, through mobile phones, someone is connecting from somewhere to someone else. There are many such reasons for the decline of morality in society. It is not possible for police alone to deal with it,' the DGP said, responding to questions from reporters. Mr. Makwana added, 'Today, no one is able to keep an eye on each other in a house. Earlier, children used to obey teachers and parents and there was a shame of [elders'] sight but now many limits have broken and the way obscene content is being served on the internet since childhood, it is definitely distorting their (children's) minds. This is the reason why these incidents have increased.' The State has seen a rise in the cases of sexual assault in recent years, with the Government informing the State Assembly that 7,294 rape cases were reported in 2024 with an average of about 20 cases per day across Madhya Pradesh. The figures showed a more than 19% increase from 6,134 cases of rape in 2020, the Government had said during the last Budget session in March. The Home Department statistics, presented in response to a question from Congress MLA Pankaj Upadhyay, had also showed an increase in the rape cases in tribal regions, with Jhabua, a community-dominated district, seeing an increase rate of 168 percent, highest in the State. Over the last five years, the cases from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community saw a 26% rise, 24% from general categories, 20% among the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and 10% from Scheduled Castes (SCs), the data showed.

Pastor, associate held: NHRC asks Ghaziabad DM to probe aide, says he availed SC benefits despite converting to Christianity
Days after the police acted on a complaint by a Bajrang Dal member and arrested a pastor and his associate for allegedly converting members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) to Christianity, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice directing the Ghaziabad district magistrate to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations against the associate, Premchand Jatav, and his family. 'The complainants alleged that Shri Premchand and his family, who were recently arrested by the Ghaziabad Police under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, have continued to hold Scheduled Caste (SC) status and avail SC-specific government benefits despite having converted to Christianity,' read the notice issued on Thursday. The two accused, Pastor Vinod Kunjumon (50) and Premchand Jatav (66), were arrested on June 15 following a complaint by a Bajrang Dal member, Prabal Gupta. The NHRC bench, presided by Priyank Kanoongo, taking cognizance of the matter under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, directed the district magistrate to submit an action taken report within 15 days. 'The allegations made in the complaint prima facie seem to be serious violations of the human rights of the victim,' read the notice. It added, 'The complainants requested the NHRC to launch an inquiry, revoke fraudulent SC certificates in the case, and conduct a broader audit of similar instances…' When contacted, Ghaziabad District Magistrate Deepak Meena said the matter will be investigated. 'We have 15 days to submit a report. We will soon set up an inquiry into the matter,' he added. Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express.
