Denmark aims to host world's most powerful quantum computer

Time of India17-07-2025
The Novo Nordisk Foundation and Denmark's state-owned credit fund said on Thursday they will invest in what they say will be the world's most powerful quantum computer, aiming to revolutionize areas such as drug discovery and materials science. Quantum computing holds the promise of carrying out calculations that would take today's systems millions of years and could unlock discoveries in medicine, chemistry and many other fields where near-infinite seas of possible combinations of molecules confound classical computers. The Novo Nordisk Foundation, the non-profit which controls pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, and Denmark's Export and Investment Fund (EIFO), said in a statement they would invest 80 million euros ($92.93 million) in the initiative called QuNorth.
Microsoft, which has its largest quantum lab in Denmark, will provide software and
Atom Computing
will build the quantum computer.
The computer will be named Magne, inspired by Norse mythology where Magne, the son of Thor, is known for his immense strength.
Construction will begin in autumn and the computer is expected to be ready by the end of next year.
The quantum computer will start operating with 50 logical qubits, Jason Zander, Microsoft's executive vice president, told Reuters.
A qubit, short for quantum bit, is the basic unit of information in a quantum computer and a logical qubit is a virtual qubit built from many physical qubits to reliably process quantum information.
Last November, Microsoft and Atom created 24 logical qubits, the highest number ever created.
"When we get to about 50 logical qubits, that's when we start hitting true
quantum advantage
," Zander said.
"I get to the point where I can run something on a quantum computer that I could not run on a classic computer."
"When the machine gets up to 100 (logical qubits), we can start doing science problems, get up to a couple 100s, we can start doing some chemistry and starting to answer things, and then when all the way up to 1,000, now you are solving everything," Zander said.

Donald Trump's sanctions working? SBI bans transactions of Nayara Energy with Russian connection due to...

Donald Trump- File image New Delhi: In a significant development amid the US's increasing pressure on India over economic and trade relations with India, the State Bank of India (SBI) has stopped handling Nayara Energy's trade and foreign exchange transactions due to concerns over US and EU sanctions following a recent US tariff hike. Notably, Nayara, formerly Essar Oil, was acquired in 2017 by a Rosneft-led group and operates India's second-largest refinery (20 MTPA) with 8% of national refining capacity and over 6,500 petrol pumps. Why SBI has banned transactions of Nayara Energy? The Russian company Nayara Energy imports crude, refines it into fuels, and sells domestically and overseas. The trade with troubles escalated after the EU's July sanctions package capped Russian crude prices at $47.6 per barrel, making transactions more difficult amid the increasing threats of tariffs from US. Microsoft restores services to Russian oil firm Nayara Energy In another significant update, Tech giant Microsoft informed that services were restored to the Russia-backed oil exploration and marketing company Nayara Energy, two days after Nayara alleged that Microsoft had abruptly cut off access to its data and services. In a statement, the company said it is 'committed to supporting all its customers in India and worldwide and has restored services for Nayara Energy'. 'We are engaged in ongoing discussions with the European Union towards service continuity for the organisation,' said a company. How is Nayara Energy related to Russia? Nayara Energy, which operates fuel retail outlets in India, is primarily owned by Russia's Rosneft, which owns nearly 49 per cent of the company. Trafigura and UCP Investment Group, both foreign companies, jointly own the majority of the remaining stake via an Indian consortium. Earlier this week, Nayara Energy filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, alleging that the US-based technology firm abruptly and unilaterally suspended essential services without notice. Bill Gates sceptical on electric trucks; Musk says Tesla Semi coming in 2026

Electric heavy-duty trucks have been a topic of debate among industry leaders for years. While Microsoft founder Bill Gates has expressed skepticism about the practicality of fully electric 18-wheelers, Elon Musk , CEO of Tesla Inc., remains confident in their future. 'Tesla Semi is not just feasible, it's the future of trucking,' Musk has said, affirming that his company's all-electric Semi truck will hit volume production next year. His bold claim comes amid growing global interest in electrifying freight transportation to cut emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. As Tesla gears up to ramp production in 2026, industry watchers are eager to see whether the Semi can deliver on its promises and truly compete with traditional diesel trucks. Bill Gates' skepticism on electric 18-wheelers Bill Gates has consistently argued that fully electric 18-wheelers face fundamental limitations, focusing on the technical challenge of batteries for heavy-duty long-haul trucks. He has stated that the high energy density required to move large payloads over long distances with batteries results in trucks carrying more battery weight, which in turn reduces their efficiency and practicality. Gates believes this makes electrification particularly tough for heavy freight, cargo ships, and passenger jets. Even with ongoing progress in battery technology, Gates maintains that batteries alone are unlikely to solve the unique needs of long-haul, heavy trucking, and has suggested that alternatives like hydrogen fuel cells or synthetic electrofuels may be more practical for these larger, energy-intensive applications. He's also noted that these synthetic fuels could be used in existing engines, minimizing the need for wholesale changes in infrastructure. Elon Musk's vision for Tesla Semi Elon Musk, meanwhile, has reaffirmed that Tesla's all-electric Semi truck will begin volume production in 2026. The company has constructed a dedicated production facility near Gigafactory Nevada with an expected annual output of 50,000 units when fully ramped. While actual output in the first year may be lower, Tesla's leadership, including Dan Priestley, head of the Semi program, has publicly shared that the company is preparing for full-scale manufacturing to start in 2026. Tesla's Semi, since its unveiling in 2017, has promised a range of 500 miles per charge, top-tier acceleration and torque, and a gross vehicle weight comparable to that of traditional diesel trucks. Tesla's strategy goes beyond the US: the company has signaled intentions to expand the Semi's market into Europe, where stricter emissions regulations and dense logistics routes present both challenges and opportunities. In addition, Tesla continues to invest in its Megacharger high-speed charging network designed to address heavy-duty fleets specifically. Tesla's expanding electric vehicle lineup Tesla is not only pushing into the heavy-duty sector. The Cybertruck, a full-size electric pickup, officially launched production at Gigafactory Texas in late 2023, with three drivetrain variants now on the US and Canadian markets. Reports also point to Tesla exploring a smaller electric pickup and an autonomous 'Cyber Cab,' specifically aimed at the ride-hailing segment, reinforcing its aim to diversify its electric portfolio further into transportation classes previously dominated by internal combustion. Challenges ahead for electric freight trucks The main challenges for electric heavy-duty trucks include the need for a robust high-capacity charging infrastructure and sufficient grid capacity, as current networks cannot always support the rapid, high-power charging required for long-haul fleets. Heavy batteries add significant weight, reducing payload capacity and fleet profitability, while also limiting range compared to diesel or hydrogen alternatives. High upfront costs, slower charging times, and limited range, often between 100 to 300 miles for most models, affect operational efficiency. Additionally, sourcing affordable, renewable electricity is still a hurdle, and while hydrogen fuel cell trucks offer lighter weight and faster refueling, they face infrastructure gaps and higher production costs. The road ahead for Tesla Semi Truck The positive momentum behind electric heavy-duty trucks is clear, with thousands of units already deployed in regional routes and last-mile logistics in 2024 and 2025, spurred by lower battery costs, new product launches, and increasingly favorable policy and regulatory landscapes. But for truly widespread, long-range electrification, especially in the heavy-duty, long-haul segment, substantial challenges remain. As both startups and legacy manufacturers invest in solutions, options like hydrogen and advanced synthetic fuels will likely complement batteries, especially for the most demanding trucking applications.

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke to Exit as Microsoft Integrates Platform into Core AI Division

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has announced he will step down at the end of 2025 to launch a new company, marking the end of a leadership era that oversaw the platform's deep shift toward artificial intelligence. His departure coincides with Microsoft's decision to fully integrate GitHub into its Core AI division, a move aimed at accelerating AI adoption in developer tools. Dohmke, who moved from Germany to the United States over a decade ago after selling his startup to Microsoft, reflected on his journey in a heartfelt farewell post. 'Over a decade ago, my family and I made the leap to move from Germany to the United States after the sale of my startup to Microsoft. In the years since, I've had the privilege of working with many exceptional human beings, including Hubbers, Microsofties, customers, partners, our GitHub Stars, open-source maintainers, and developers around the world who've helped us shape GitHub,' he wrote. The reshuffle will see Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft's developer division, take charge of GitHub's revenue, engineering, and support functions. Meanwhile, GitHub chief product officer Mario Rodriguez will now report to Asha Sharma, Microsoft's head of product for AI platforms. Dohmke played a key role in Microsoft's $7.5 billion all-stock acquisition of GitHub in 2018, working closely with then-CEO Nat Friedman. Under his leadership, the platform expanded its global footprint, achieved US FedRAMP certification for government usage, and doubled the number of AI-related projects hosted. GitHub now serves more than 150 million developers worldwide, offering tools that make it easier to create, manage, and collaborate on software projects. A standout achievement during Dohmke's tenure was the introduction and rapid growth of GitHub Copilot, an AI-powered coding assistant that can generate code snippets, suggest solutions, and boost developer productivity. The tool has become central to Microsoft's vision of integrating AI into every stage of the software development process. Although Microsoft has not yet named a permanent successor, Dohmke will remain in his role through the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition. In his farewell note, he hinted that his next chapter will take him back to his entrepreneurial roots. 'I've decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again,' he shared, keeping details of his new venture under wraps. Reflecting on the broader mission of GitHub and AI's role in shaping the future of coding, he added, 'We only succeed when the world succeeds, too. By launching this new age of developer AI, we've made it possible for anyone — no matter what language they speak at home or how fluent they are in programming — to take their spark of creativity and transform it into something real. I am more convinced than ever that the world will soon see one billion developers enabled by billions of AI agents, each imprinting human ingenuity into a new gold rush of software. When that day comes, we'll know where the path began: with GitHub.'
