
Hubble Space Telescope Reveals Moons And Rings Of ‘Weird' Uranus
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has snapped new images of the solar system's seventh planet, Uranus, revealing not only its rings but new secrets about its intriguing moons and how its magnetic field works.

Hubble's new ultraviolet image of Uranus, taken with its Advanced Camera for Surveys, shows the gas giant planet in space with its five largest moons — often referred to as its 'classical moons' — in a jagged line.
The moons — Titania, Oberon, Umbriel, Miranda and Ariel — were captured in the image, which was published on June 10. Ariel can be seen transiting the disk of Uranus, with its shadow apparent on the planet's blue methane-rich atmosphere. All may be 'ocean worlds,' which could host life.
The image also shows faint, ghostly rings around Uranus. According to NASA, Uranus has 13 faint rings in total, divided into two distinct sets. In 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope imaged the rings of Uranus and six of its 27 moons and is expected to do so again.

This new study, presented during a press conference at AAS 246 in Anchorage, Alaska, on Tuesday, June 10, examines the magnetic environment of Uranus and its largest moons. It reveals surprising findings. Scientists had expected that radiation from the magnetic field of Uranus would darken the trailing hemispheres of its moons, but an analysis of the surfaces of Uranus' four major moons — Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon — found the opposite. That suggests that Uranus' magnetosphere might not interact much with its large moons, and it may be either dormant or much more complicated than previously thought. 'Uranus is weird, so it's always been uncertain how much the magnetic field actually interacts with its satellites,' said Richard Cartwright, principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. 'For starters, it is tilted by 98 degrees relative to the ecliptic." That means it rolls on its side as it completes its 84-Earth-year orbit of the sun.
The two ice giant planets in the solar system — Uranus and Neptune — remain unexplored, having had only brief flybys by Voyager 2 in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Planetary scientists' lack of detailed knowledge about ice giants (large planets composed mainly of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium) has become more significant in recent years, particularly with research into exoplanets — planets that orbit a star other than the sun. According to research, the most typical size of exoplanets in the Milky Way is between that of Earth and Neptune, which are likely to be ice giants. If astronomers are to understand other star systems, they need a baseline — and that means sending a mission to Uranus or Neptune.
Hopes are fading for a much-needed NASA flagship mission to Uranus. Despite being recommended as NASA's highest priority large mission in 2022 by the National Academy of Sciences, the likelihood of a $4.2 billion orbiter — with an atmospheric probe to dive beneath its clouds — is now small in the light of a 'destructive proposal' by the Trump Administration to cut almost $6 billion (24%) from the space agency's budget. Scientists want NASA to send the mission in 2032, with a planned arrival at Uranus in 2045. The next best launch window is in the 2090s.

Space station leak investigation prompts NASA, Axiom Space to postpone launch
An ongoing leak on the Russian side of the International Space Station has prompted an indefinite postponement of a planned human spaceflight from Kennedy Space Center, according to NASA. Axiom Space was aiming to launch its Ax-4 mission with four private astronauts this week atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 from KSC's Launch Pad 39-A, and had already faced delays because of weather and a required liquid oxygen leak on the rocket's booster. But while SpaceX was prepared to perform a static fire Thursday to check on the booster repairs, NASA announced the visit from Axiom Space was going on hold because of an investigation with Russian space agency Roscosmos into recent repairs made on the Zvezda service module. The Zvezda module leaks first began in 2019, but worsened in 2024. To mitigate its effects, Roscosmos has been keeping the hatch to the module closed when not in use as a docking port for Progress resupply and Soyuz spacecraft. The most recent repairs on the aft-most segment of the module have halted the loss of pressure, NASA stated, but still opted to delay Axiom's visit. 'Cosmonauts aboard the space station recently performed inspections of the pressurized module's interior surfaces, sealed some additional areas of interest, and measured the current leak rate,' NASA said in a press release. 'Following this effort, the segment now is holding pressure. The postponement of Axiom Mission 4 provides additional time for NASA and Roscosmos to evaluate the situation and determine whether any additional troubleshooting is necessary.' The space station crew of Expedition 73 is made up of seven astronauts and cosmonauts, who had been expecting their population to grow by four with the arrival of Ax-4 this week for about a two-week visit. Leading the Ax-4 mission is former NASA astronaut and current Axiom employee Peggy Whitson, who would have been making her fifth trip to space. She's commanding a crew of Axiom Space customers made up of Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla holding the role of pilot, mission specialist Tibor Kapu of Hungary, and mission specialist Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland representing the European Space Agency. The governments of India, Hungary and Poland have not sent astronauts to space in more than four decades. Their return to space, though, is uncertain with the leak investigation. NASA had previously said there were launch options through June 30, and then again in the second week of July, but then traffic gets busy at the space station including a replacement crew rotation flight at the end of July.

Commercial crew launch delayed while ISS air leak assessed
Concern about a small but persistent air leak in a Russian compartment of the International Space Station has prompted NASA and Axiom Space to indefinitely delay this week's launch of a commercial flight to the orbiting outpost, officials said Thursday. The privately-financed Axiom-4 crew — commander Peggy Whitson, Indian pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, Polish researcher Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Hungarian engineer Tibor Kapu — originally planned to take off Tuesday. But the flight was delayed to the end of the week, first by high winds in the off-shore emergency splashdown zone and then by an oxygen leak in their Falcon 9 rocket's first stage. SpaceX tentatively targeted Thursday and then Friday for launch, with Saturday and Sunday available if needed. But during SpaceX troubleshooting to find and fix the rocket's propellant leak, NASA engineers decided they needed more time to assess recent efforts to plug an air leak aboard the International Space Station in a Russian vestibule known as the PrK. The PrK serves as a passageway between the station's Zvezda module and spacecraft docked at its aft port. "Teams met today and we will not be launching Axiom-4 tomorrow," flight controllers in Houston radioed the ISS. "We are assessing a new launch date. This is due to the ongoing PrK investigation. So I don't have a new launch date right now, but we will not be launching tomorrow and docking Saturday." In a blog post, NASA said cosmonauts aboard the station "recently performed inspections of the pressurized module's interior surfaces, sealed some additional areas of interest, and measured the current leak rate. Following this effort, the segment now is holding pressure." The post went on to say the Axiom-4 delay will provide "additional time for NASA and (the Russian space agency) Roscosmos to evaluate the situation and determine whether any additional troubleshooting is necessary." Launched in July 2000 atop a Russian Proton rocket, Zvezda was the third module to join the growing space station, providing a command center for Russian cosmonauts, crew quarters, the aft docking port and two additional ports now occupied by airlock and research modules. The leakage was first noticed in 2019, and has been openly discussed ever since by NASA during periodic reviews and space station news briefings. The leak rate has varied, but has stayed in the neighborhood of around 1-to-2 pounds per day. "The station is not young," astronaut Mike Barratt said last November during a post flight news conference. "It's been up there for quite a while, and you expect some wear and tear, and we're seeing that in the form of some cracks that have formed." The Russians have made a variety of attempts to patch a suspect crack and other possible sources of leakage, but air has continued to escape into space. In November, Bob Cabana, a former astronaut and NASA manager who chaired the agency's ISS Advisory Committee, said U.S. and Russian engineers "don't have a common understanding of what the likely root cause is, or the severity of the consequences of these leaks." "The Russian position is that the most probable cause of the PrK cracks is high cyclic fatigue caused by micro vibrations," Cabana said. "NASA believes the PrK cracks are likely multi-causal including pressure and mechanical stress, residual stress, material properties and environmental exposures. "The Russians believe that continued operations are safe, but they can't prove to our satisfaction that they are, and the US believes that it's not safe, but we can't prove that to the Russian satisfaction that that's the case." As an interim step, the hatch leading to the PrK and the station's aft docking compartment is closed during daily operations and only opened when the Russians need to unload a visiting Progress cargo ship. And as an added precaution on NASA's part, whenever the hatch to the PrK and docking compartment is open, a hatch between the Russian and U.S. segments of the station is closed. "We've taken a very conservative approach to close a hatch between the US side and the Russian side during those time periods," Barratt said. "It's not a comfortable thing, but it is the best agreement between all the smart people on both sides. And it's something that we crew live with and enact." Cabana said last year that the Russians do not believe "catastrophic disintegration of the PrK is realistic (but) NASA has expressed concerns about the structural integrity of the PrK and the possibility of a catastrophic failure." Check out this interactive map of the early universe, considered largest ever created An intricate astral tapestry, the map gives stargazers digital views of the ancient cosmos in unprecedented detail and breadth. A team of astronomers have put together the largest, most detailed map of the universe ever created – and you can explore it now. The interactive online map, created using data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, details some 800,000 galaxies across a vast cosmic distance – which in astronomy amounts to peering back in time. In fact, some of the galaxies are so far away, they appear as they existed not long after the Big Bang. Depicting a section of the universe known as the COSMOS-Web field, the new map is far more expansive than even the iconic Hubble Ultra Deep Field, a view of 10,000 galaxies NASA released in 2004. Spanning nearly all of cosmic time, the new map has the potential to challenge existing notions of the infant universe, the astronomers who created it claimed in a press release. The best part? The interactive map is available for the public to use. See interactive map of the universe A team of international scientists who are part of the Cosmic Evolution Survey program (COSMOS) created and released the map of the universe Thursday, June 5. Compiled from more than 10,000 images of COSMOS-Web – the largest observing program of James Webb Space Telescope's first year in orbit – the map covers about three times as much space as the moon takes up when viewed from Earth. That makes it the largest contiguous image available from Webb, according to the Rochester Institute of Technology, whose Jeyhan Kartaltepe is a lead researcher on the project. Scrolling and zooming in can take users some 13.5 billion years back in time when the universe was in its infancy and stars, galaxies and black holes were still forming. NASA's Webb telescope gathers data for online map Using its powerful resolution and infrared capabilities, the James Webb Space Telescope observed a region of space known as the COSMOS-web field, which scientists have been surveying for years. The raw data from the COSMOS field observations was made publicly available once it was collected by Webb, but that didn't mean it was easily accessible. That's why the COSMOS project spent two years creating the map from Webb's raw data to make it more digestible for amateur astronomers, researchers and even the general public. "In releasing the data to the public, the hope is that other astronomers from all over the world will use it to, among other things, further refine our understanding of how the early universe was populated and how everything evolved to the present day," according to a statement from UC Santa Barbara. What is the James Webb Space Telescope? The James Webb Space Telescope, which launched in 2021, far surpasses the abilities of the Hubble Space Telescope, launched 35 years ago in 1990. Orbiting the sun rather than Earth, the Webb is outfitted with a gold-coated mirror and powerful infrared instruments to observe the cosmos like no instrument before. Since reaching the cosmos, Webb has not only facilitated countless scientific breakthroughs in astrophysics, but it also has produced gorgeous images of planets and other celestial objects, including star-forming regions. In March, NASA also deployed into orbit its SPHEREx telescope to collect data on more than 450 million galaxies. Scientists say the SPHEREx observatory will be able to get a wider view of the galaxy – identifying objects of scientific interest that telescopes like Hubble and Webb can then study up close.
