Real Madrid: Barcelona-Villarreal clash in US would set unacceptable precedent
Fan groups of the respective clubs have already threatened legal action if the plan progresses, and now Real have expressed their opposition to the move.

'Real Madrid would like to express to its members, supporters and football fans in general its strongest rejection of the proposal to play outside Spain the match…between Villarreal and Barcelona,' the capital club said in a statement.
'The measure, promoted without prior information or consultation with the clubs participating in that competition, violates the essential principle of territorial reciprocity that governs two-round league competitions (one game at home and the other at the opposing team's), altering the competitive balance and granting an undue sporting advantage to the applicant clubs.
'The integrity of the competition requires that all matches be held under the same conditions for all teams.
'Unilaterally modifying this regime breaks the equality between contenders, compromises the legitimacy of the results and sets an unacceptable precedent that opens the door to exceptions based on interests other than strictly sporting, with a clear impact on sporting integrity and the risk of adulteration of the competition.
'If this proposal is carried out, its consequences would be so serious that they would mean a before and after for the world of football.'

Real said they had asked FIFA not to authorise the staging of the game without the prior consent of all LaLiga clubs, and had asked UEFA to urge the Spanish football federation (RFEF) to withdraw the request.
Villarreal had earlier pledged that season ticket holders would be offered free travel and entry if the league game was moved to Miami.
Season ticket holders who choose to go will have their travel and ticket paid for, the club said on their website, while they pledged that those who cannot go, or do not wish to go, will receive a 20 per cent discount on the total cost of their season ticket.
If Villarreal and Barcelona ultimately get the green light, LaLiga will be the first of Europe's 'Big Five' leagues to stage a match overseas.
Villarreal president Fernando Roig told the club's official website: 'Reaching the United States is an opportunity we must seize.

'We have to expand the brand of our football and of Villarreal CF.
'Many clubs agree on the need to internationalise and to look for ways to generate more revenue so we can get closer to other leagues, such as the Premier League.'
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) gave its approval to the plan on Monday. The matter has now been referred to European football's governing body UEFA to begin the procedures and obtain the necessary authorisation from FIFA, world football's governing body.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in April last year his competition had no plans to move matches overseas but accepted FIFA moves to review the rules meant the 'door was ajar' for other leagues to do so.

The Turin-based team have not been forthcoming in getting a deal over the line however, with one Italian chief suggesting players would need to be sold to coutenance a deal. United have already been forced to admit they will sell Sancho for less than £25m this summer, while Roma could also be interested in a loan deal, per BBC. That would contain clauses to be triggered at the end of the season but is complicated by Sancho's contract situation. The Red Devils have an option to extend the star's deal by a further year but his significant salary places some doubt over whether United would be willing to action such a move. Sancho was willing to half his wages in order to facilitate a move to Juventus, but the Old Lady were able to offer the lure of Champions League football, Roma are unable to provide the same incentive. Sancho is one of a number of players United have been unable to get off their books so far this summer. The ex-Manchester City youth product has been kept away from first team operations along with Tyrell Malacia, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. The latter is hoping for a move to Chelsea having agreed personal terms but a fee has not yet been agreed between clubs. Antony meanwhile is holding out for a transfer to Real Betis but has been handed an ultimatum by United to make a move more quickly with the La Liga side planning on waiting until the very end of the summer window. United boss Amorim has suggested that group could yet return to his plans. "Some players have to find a new place to have space in the team. Other players show they want a new challenge and a new team," said Amorim earlier in the summer. "We are just allowing these players to think and decide. If they reach a point where they will have to join the team, they will join because they are our players. "I know for a fact Omar (Barrada, CEO) and Jason (Wilcox, director of football) and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. I understand other clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise. "I'm ready to receive the players. They have more competition. If they want to play in the World Cup, they need to play. I'm happy with that because I'll have more options. August 14 - Inter Miami CF announced the transfer of midfielder Federico Redondo to La Liga side Elche CF on Thursday. Redondo, 22, competes internationally for Argentina. He joined Miami from Argentinos Junior in February 2024. He recorded two goals and five assists in 60 matches across all competitions with the Herons, helping them win the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield. Liverpool told Mikel Arteta to blame for transfer heartache after secret Arsenal chat
Arsenal completed the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad this summer, but the Spain international was on the verge of joining Liverpool 12 months ago Jamie Carragher thinks Mikel Arteta is the reason Martin Zubimendi didn't sign for Liverpool last year. The Spanish midfielder, who sealed a move to Arsenal this summer, had been on the brink of signing for the Reds in 2024. Liverpool had arranged a £51million deal with Real Sociedad and agreed personal terms with Zubimendi. Everything was ready to go - until the 26-year-old abruptly pulled the plug on the move at the eleventh hour. Publicly, Zubimendi claimed his choice was rooted in loyalty to his boyhood team. Carragher, however, suspects a different story. He believes Arteta subtly persuaded the player to wait for Arsenal, planting the seeds for a move to north London long before it was confirmed. "I'm convinced now that Arteta stole him from Liverpool," Carragher told the Stick to Football podcast. "He'd agreed to come to Liverpool. He said he was coming - and at the last minute he said, 'I don't want to come. I'll have another year [at Sociedad].' "Arteta's from the Basque area. There's no doubt he's been into him and said, 'We're signing [Mikel] Merino this season, we'll come for you next season.' "The deal was done about halfway through the season. He definitely stopped [Liverpool's] deal. That's why Zubimendi didn't go to Liverpool. I think Arteta got into him." Arteta was born in San Sebastian - home to Real Sociedad - and even played briefly for the club, joining from Rangers in 2004 before leaving for Everton just six months later. Fast forward to late 2024, and he was reportedly working discreetly with his former side to secure Zubimendi for £55m. The transfer became official in July, with the Spaniard now expected to feature alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in a potentially formidable Arsenal midfield. Missing out on Zubimendi was a major disappointment in an otherwise subdued Liverpool summer transfer window 12 months ago. Federico Chiesa was their only major signing, and the Italian forward found minutes hard to come by. Still, it hardly derailed them - Arne Slot led Liverpool to a dominant Premier League triumph, finishing 10 points ahead of Arsenal to claim the club's 20th league title. This year, Arteta and Zubimendi aim to close that gap, though Liverpool's heavy summer spending of nearly £300m - on Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, and with deals for the likes of Marc Guehi, Giovanni Leoni, and Alexander Isak potentially to come - makes that challenge steeper. That said, Liverpool's campaign began with a stumble in the Community Shield, losing to Crystal Palace on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Goals from Ekitike and Frimpong, along with an eye-catching display from Wirtz, gave a glimpse of what Slot's retooled side might deliver, but there are perhaps one or two tactical kinks to iron out first.
