Happy Valley star Siobhan Finneran is set to grace our screens once again tonight in ITV's new police drama series, Protection.
The 60-year-old actress from Oldham has taken on the role of of DI Liz Nyles, a police officer working in the witness protection department. Her role involves safeguarding those who have testified against criminals and are subsequently placed in safe houses.
However, when a murder occurs at one of these safe houses, the detective suspects a leak within her team.

As SCI Hannah Wheatley (played by Katherine Kelly) arrives to probe potential corruption within the unit, Liz embarks on her own investigation, reports Plymouth Live.
She zeroes in on her younger, married colleague DS Paul Brandice (portrayed by Barry Ward), with whom she has been having a clandestine affair.
Speaking about her character, Siobhan says: "She's a woman in her fifties with a 16-year-old daughter, and she's just become a full-time carer to her dad.
Siobhan Finneran, known for her role as the scheming Sarah O'Brien in the hit series Downton Abbey, once shared her childhood aspirations in an interview by confessing: "as a little girl I wanted to be Eric Morecambe. Not to be like him but to actually be him."
Her passion for acting saw her embark on a theatre studies course prior to landing her breakthrough role as Rita in the film 'Rita, Sue and Bob Too' (1987), featuring stars such as Lesley Sharp from The Full Monty, George Costigan of Line of Duty fame, and Hollyoaks actress Michelle Holmes.
Finneran's career progressed with numerous stage credits including appearances in 'Clocking Off', 'Unforgiven', and 'The Moorside'. Her television roles span a variety of genres and shows, such as Emmerdale, the Netflix original The Stranger, cult classic Doctor Who, The Lock, and of course, Downton Abbey where her exceptional performance earned her the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
More recently, she graced the screen in the opening episode of Inside No. 9's final season, and portrayed Beryl in The Reckoning, a poignant mini-series delving into the life of Jimmy Savile.
In the late 90s, Siobhan tied the knot with Emmerdale star Mark Jordon, and the pair were blessed with two children, Poppy and Jordan. They took a step back from their acting careers to focus on raising their beautiful family.
Sadly, their marriage came to an end in 2014, leading Mark to find love again with fellow Emmerdale actress Laura Norton, with whom he has two more children.
Siobhan, on the other hand, has been rumoured to be romantically involved with Don Gilet, known for his recent role as the lead detective in BBC's popular series Death In Paradise. The two built a connection while working together on the 2017 series The Loch.
While they have not confirmed their relationship status publicly, they were seen hand-in-hand at last year's TV Choice Awards.
Further fuelling the speculation, Siobhan fondly mentioned Don as "my fella" during an interview with The Guardian. She recounted how, after rediscovering a humorous card featuring Rudi Hurzlmeier's artwork that had made her laugh years before, Don presented her with a book of the artist's work for Christmas.
This was particularly meaningful because it mirrored the artwork she had shared with Don: "It's a picture of a nun looking in a shoe shop, and a bloke next to her has got his hand on her bum. I showed it to Don [Gilet], my fella, and now one of my Christmas presents is a book of Hurzlmeier's work," Siobhan previously disclosed.
Protection is on ITV1 on Sunday, March 16 at 9pm.

The Final 'Downton Abbey' Film Is Coming—Read All About It Here!

The final installment in the Downton Abbey cinematic universe is on the way—and we can hardly contain our excitement! The historical drama first pulled us in back in 2010, and since the first moments we spent getting to know the Crawley family, we've been invested in the lives of the characters through it all. Now, as we prepare for the final chapter, take a look at what you can expect from Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, headed to theaters soon! The third and final movie in the Downton Abbey film series will follow Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, who first made her debut in the series over a decade ago. In the last movie in the trilogy, fans will get to follow along on her journey as she navigates London's high society in 1930. Simultaneously, Lord and Lady Grantham will play a part in this film as they manage their Yorkshire county estate. Check out the film's trailer below! In addition to Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern will return in their roles of Lord and Lady Grantham. Other familiar faces joining this cast include Jim Carter as Mr. Carson, Joanne Froggatt as Anna, Brendan Coyle as John, Penelope Wilton as Isobel, Phyllis Logan as Mrs. Hughes, as well as Dominic West as Guy Dexter and Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti as Harold. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will hit theaters on September 12. With The Grand Finale being the final installment of Downton Abbey, many of the cast members have reflected fondly on the journey. 'It's a beautiful film,' Michelle Dockery told Collider earlier in the year. 'For us, it was such a treat to be able to come back together again. It's a real tribute to Maggie Smith, the film.' Smith portrayed Violet Crawley in the series and after her 2024 passing, is remembered with love and affection by both her past costars and the world. Dockery continued, 'For us, we've had so many last times,' she said, referring to various finales over the years, 'But this time around, I think we really relished every minute. It being the last, it felt really, really special. Like anything, when something comes to an end, it's emotional but just such a happy place to be. It's always been a very happy place to be and a wonderful thing to be part of for the last 15 years.' Don't miss this final chapter, heading to theaters this September! Pride celebrations kick off in Bishop Auckland with music and famous faces

Drag Race stars and Eastenders actors were some of the special guests at this year's Bishop Auckland Pride. This year's event took place at Bishop Auckland College, and featured special guest appearances from Eastender's Cheryl Fergison and Ru Paul's Drag Race winner, Danny Beard. Despite the grey clouds for most of the day, there was an array of colour and sunshine as people turned out for a day of celebration. People were draped in flags, families were having picnics, people were getting their faces painted, and there was even karaoke on offer. The main stage at Bishop Auckland Pride saw performances from a Jess Glynne tribute act and the ABBA experience, before Danny Beard took to the stage at 8:30pm There was plenty for children and families to do too, with fairground rides, a bouncy castle and a soft play area. As well as activities and events outside, inside the college there was a student exhibition called 'Inclusion', an interactive video installation called Endless Love Tapes, (unscripted, three-minute reflections on what love means to people) and a guided meditation and yoga zone. Before her appearance at Bishop Auckland Pride, ex-EastEnders actress Cheryl Fergison spoke to The Northern Echo about the continued importance of Pride events. Cheryl said: "Coming to places like Bishop Auckland, it is important the whole community knows that we are all diverse, all inclusive, and it is about community and education at the end of the day. "And if we can do that with amazing events like this, getting families together, having great family days out, but also supporting the LGBTQ+ community. That's what it is all about". Cheryl attended Bishop Auckland Pride with her son, Alex, who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Cheryl added: "I've always been an ally for the LGBTQ+ community for as long as I can remember. "My son Alex is also part of the community, so we do Pride events together now. I am absolutely honoured to be known as a hun, apparently, and I love it. I have done Pride events for a few years now and I'm so happy to be able to do it with my son as well. EastEnders fans concerned BBC soap star has 'quit' after 6 years as character

Over the last few weeks, there have been recent EastEnders exits confirmed including Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier). Among them is also Bernadette 'Bernie' Taylor (Clair Norris) who will also be leaving Albert Square after eight years. But now some fans are concerned another has quietly 'quit', after first joining the BBC soap six years ago. In 2019, Lexi Pearce, who is the daughter of the late Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) returned to EastEnders and has since been played by Isabella Brown. The young actress took over from Dotti-Beau Cotterill, who played the character between 2012 and 2015. However, viewers have recently noticed Lexi's absence in recent months, with some saying they haven't seen her since EastEnders' 40th anniversary earlier in the year and fear she has 'left' the programme. It comes as someone wrote on Reddit: 'Anyone know what's happening with Lexi? She hasn't been seen since the 40th anniversairy and was rather absent prior to that too. 'Lexi is 13 next month. The same age as Lily was when she gave birth.' They added: 'With only 9 appearances this year I wouldn't be shocked to see her return with a new head.' One person replied: 'She was last seen on March after Phil's special episode if I remember correctly. I assume we'll be seeing more of her later in the year. Her and Lola's birthdays are coming up in July so it'd be nice if the show adressed it.' Another commented that they hope EastEnders has 'something planned for later in the year' as 'it's a shame she was absent for Phil's recent storyline'. Meanwhile, others have said they think Lexi could be 'recast', according to the post on the subreddit r/eastenders. As this profile wrote: 'Looks wise the actress reminds me a lot of the old Amy Mitchell so I wonder if they'll recast her soon to someone more older/ older looking.' A second Reddit account put: 'I hope she doesn't get recast. She's a great actress and it's nice to see a realistic looking teenager. Most of the teens are played by adults and even the likes of Lily who is only 16 irl I feel always looked a bit older (which obviously isn't her fault, some teens do look older which is realistic but not literally all of them.)' But a few fans joined in to say: 'Not every character has to be on screen all the time. It's one of the perks of having an ensemble cast.' Blink and you'll miss it! #EastEnders, 7:30pm, Monday 16th June on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer. — BBC EastEnders (@bbceastenders) June 14, 2025 In agreement, a user added: 'The other child actors and actresses have big breaks too. Lily just left for a while Hope and Arthur have spent time of screen as have Kat and Alfies two twins spend time off Screen Ricky has loads of time off screen.' However, back in December last year, Isabella's agent (EJC Management) confirmed that she would continue to play Lexi "throughout 2025". An Instagram post previously said: "So very proud of this young lady! "Our incredible ISABELLA BROWN will continue to play the brilliant Lexi Pearce throughout 2025 in @bbceastenders. Her dedication, drive, professionalism and work ethic is so inspiring from someone so young. "She has had some amazing storylines and we can't wait to see what 2025 has in store for Lexi!" Newsquest has approached EastEnders for comment.
