Revealed: UEFA Super Cup 'could be expanded' - and moved to 'Asia or the United States' - in football's next break from tradition
That's the latest revelation in a footballing landscape which is constantly in flux with change, awash with cash, and filled with grandiose ideas of growth.
Since 1973, the Super Cup showdown has been the prize awaiting the victors of the Champions League and either the Cup Winners' Cup or the Europa League (including their forerunners).
The competition was witnessed some brilliant games - Barcelona pipping Sevilla 5-4 in 2015; Radamel Falcao scoring a hat-trick in 2012 as Atletico Madrid thrashed Chelsea 4-1; Galatasaray shocking Real Madrid with Mario Jardel's Golden Goal in 2000.
But its rich history could be traded for a new format, played out in a far-flung destination, according to The Telegraph.
The outlet reports that it could expand to four teams and see its fixtures played in the Middle East or United States.
Previous proposals to revamp the tournament could resurface as bids are considered
UEFA have previously floated the notion of re-inventing the Super Cup.
In 2022, in a document used to sell TV rights for the 2024-2027 period, the idea of a 'Champions League opening tournament' was raised.
Currently, it is unclear who else would gain entry into the tournament if it was doubled in size.
A logical solution would be to include the winners of the Europa Conference League and the runners-up of the Champions League.
And this sort of switch does have precedent. The Supercopa de Espana used to be a two-team affair, but since 2020 it has included four teams - the winners and runners-up of La Liga and the Copa del Rey - playing their games out in Saudi Arabia, barring 2021.
According to The Telegraph, the idea for an enlarged, relocated Super Cup could resurface as UEFA and their US-based media rights sales partner, Relevent, consider fresh bids.
It would be another sign of a changing game which often forefronts the desire to profit over catering to local fans.
Just this week, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) reportedly approved a request to stage December's LaLiga clash between Villarreal and Barcelona.
The RFEF's board of directors, who received and discussed the proposal during a meeting on Monday, have given a green light to the request which will now be submitted to UEFA and FIFA for further approval.
In what would mark the first ever European top-flight league fixture to take place abroad, it has been requested that Villarreal's home clash with Barcelona in December be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, as per The Athletic.

The newspaper claims that Hjulmand, who is expected to cost half the fee Baleba would demand, would only be pursued if United miss out on the Cameroonian altogether. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed on Wednesday that United are ready to step up their pursuit of Baleba after hearing the player is keen to make the switch. But Amorim is also a strong admirer of the Danish midfielder and has previously lauded his 'monster mentality' and leadership qualities, having appointed him captain. Baleba helped Brighton finish eighth in the Premier League last season, just five points off fifth-placed Newcastle, who secured Champions League football. The Seagulls, who have made a habit of selling the likes of Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for huge profits, are less keen to sell Baleba this summer given he had an impressive season. According to The Athletic, a move for the youngster is 'improbable' unless United are able to secure a series of lucrative sales before the window closes at the start of next month. Only Liverpool and Chelsea can boast a higher spend among the Premier League's money-spinning corridors this summer. One Manchester United fan has set up a GoFundMe page to try and raise funds for a Baleba bid, though in four days it had only raised £501 of its £120m target. In defensive midfield, United currently have Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer as options, while Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo can also be deployed in the centre of the park in their 3-4-3 formation. He stated: 'I think it's just to be better every day and to try to be more consistent than we were last season. So just trying to be better every day and grow. 'Everyone has to grow as an individual and as a team and if we kind of have that mentality inside our team. I think we're going to be more consistent and it's going to get better day by day. 'Instead of being very good in the start of the season we maybe can be better and better throughout the season. So that's maybe the goal to be more consistent and get better and better.' Meanwhile Thelin is trying to add to his Aberdeen squad before the play-off game. Aberdeen have agreed a deal with AC Milan for striker Marko Lazetic while Varnamo winger Kenan Bilalovic has arrived this evening. A deal for Lazetic is a given ahead of Thursday and it's now down to visas and red tape whether they can feature in their Euro opener next week. It is down to the authorities and that can take days or weeks.
