Express Tribune21-02-2025
Saudi Arabia has officially launched a new symbol for its national currency, the riyal, marking a significant milestone in reinforcing the kingdom's financial identity.
The newly designed riyal symbol, which reflects Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage, aims to make the currency more recognizable in local, regional, and international financial and commercial transactions.
Inspired by Arabic calligraphy, the symbol includes the name of the national currency, 'Riyal,' and was designed to meet the highest technical standards.

SAMA Governor Ayman Al-Sayari praised the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their vision in launching the currency symbol, which is expected to enhance Saudi Arabia's position within the global financial system, particularly among the world's largest economies and G20 members.
The new symbol will be integrated into financial and commercial transactions, gradually making its appearance across various applications and official documents. The initiative was developed with input from key institutions, including the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO).
Al-Sayari emphasized that the currency symbol is an essential step toward furthering Saudi Arabia's financial development, in line with the kingdom's Vision 2030. He also pointed out that the symbol will foster a sense of national pride and cultural affiliation while bolstering the confidence in the riyal as a stable and significant currency on the global stage.
The decision to introduce the symbol underscores Saudi Arabia's growing influence in the global financial landscape and represents a modern step toward reinforcing its national identity, both at home and abroad. The initiative serves as a reflection of the country's commitment to economic growth, cultural heritage, and global integration.
SAMA's announcement of the new riyal symbol is a key milestone in Saudi Arabia's broader financial development strategy as the kingdom continues its efforts to strengthen its position in the global economy.

Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund says AI embedded across every layer of organization

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia's nearly $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund said on Wednesday artificial intelligence and automation have become embedded across 'every layer' of its operation, reshaping not only what it invests in, but how it invests. The shift reflects a broader national ambition to integrate advanced technologies into the heart of the Saudi economy, and to redefine the region's financial future not through oil, but through algorithms. In its 2024 annual report, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) described AI as a catalyst that is fundamentally altering the way the state fund makes decisions, allocates capital and evaluates value. PIF said it had implemented an AI-powered valuation platform to bring greater precision and speed to private market investment assessments. It has also developed a large language model for real-time investment reporting and is using AI tools for asset manager analysis and portfolio optimisation. Saudi wealth fund net profit tumbles 60% in 2024 Tasked with spearheading the kingdom's economic diversification under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan, PIF has moved well beyond its early holdings in public equities and infrastructure. In recent years, the fund has taken high-profile stakes in global brands like Uber, Lucid Motors, and Nintendo, while also backing sports ventures including LIV Golf and Newcastle United. At home, it has poured billions into giga-projects such as NEOM, the futuristic city on the Red Sea, and strategic sectors like tourism, logistics, and clean energy.

Brazil's Lula, China's Xi discuss BRICS, bilateral opportunities

BRASILIA/BEIJING: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Chinese President Xi Jinping have discussed the role of the BRICS group of states and bilateral business over a phone call, according to Lula's office and Chinese state media said. The leaders spoke for an hour on Monday, agreeing on the role of the G20 and BRICS in defending multilateralism,' Brazil's presidency said in a statement. 'Both presidents also highlighted their willingness to continue identifying new business opportunities between the two economies,' the statement said. Lula said last week he would initiate a conversation about how to tackle Trump's tariffs with BRICS nations, after Trump dubbed the group 'anti-American' and threatened them with additional tariffs. Xi called BRICS a key platform for building consensus in the Global South and said China is ready to work with Brazil to set an example of unity and self-reliance among major Global South nations, Chinese state media Xinhua reported. Agriculture trade features notably in China and Brazil's relations. China, the world's biggest soybean importer, gets most of the commodity from Brazil and recently, numerous Brazilian coffee companies found entry into the Chinese market after the industry was hit by steep US tariffs. China last week also showed Brazil support in resisting the 'bullying behaviour' of imposing excessive tariffs, without naming the US. Xi described ties between the two countries as 'at their best in history', and said both should work together to address global challenges and promote the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, Xinhua said.

UAE may host Trump-Putin meeting

US President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are seen during the G20 leaders summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina November 30, 2018. PHOTO: REUTERS Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to the leaders of China, India and three ex-Soviet states on Friday in a flurry of calls to brief them on his contacts with the United States about the war in Ukraine. Putin met US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Wednesday, after which the Kremlin said a summit between Putin and Trump could take place as early as next week. No venue, date or agenda have been announced. Trump, pressing for an end to the 3-1/2-year war, had set a deadline that expires on Friday for Russia to agree to peace or face new sanctions on Moscow and countries that buy Russian exports. China and India are the biggest buyers of Russian oil. China's President Xi Jinping told Putin in a phone call that China is pleased to see Russia and the United States maintaining contact and improving ties to advance a political resolution of the Ukraine crisis, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said. China is a major backer of Russia in its confrontation with the West, as well as Russia's biggest trading partner. Putin is due to visit China in September for events marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two. The Kremlin said that Putin also discussed his talks with Witkoff with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump this week announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods to penalise New Delhi for its purchases of Russian oil. "Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine," Modi said in a post on X. Putin on Friday also discussed the outcome of Witkoff's visit in calls with his ally Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus, and with the leaders of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
