Balrampur Chini unveils eco-friendly input for making single-use products
With a bit of policy support in India, PLA can replace polyethylene, the raw material for single use plastic.
Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. (BCML), one of India's biggest sugar manufacturers has taken the lead to tap this opportunity and is popularising PLA under the brandBalrampur Bioyug which will be supplied to small-scale units to make eco-friendly single-use products. The brand was formally unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai.
BCML is currently setting up a PLA plant with an investment of ₹2,850 crore at its existing sugar factory in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. This plant would be India's first industrial-scale biopolymer plant and powered by 100% renewable energy for its entire production process. This will be the first plant location where sugarcane will be transformed into PLA in a single, integrated site, as per the company.
To popularise the products among producers and consumers, the company has rolled out a fully equipped bus called Bioyog on Wheels that will go around the country to demonstrate the production of eco-friendly products on the spot and carry the message of circular economy and sustainable living.

'Additionally with the roll-out of the Uttar Pradesh Government's first-ever Bioplastic Policy, we felt empowered to confidently enter this dynamic sector, aligning growth with national environmental goals,' he said.
Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director, BCML said, 'Today, we didn't just unveil a brand — we launched a transformative movement. Bioyug marks a pivotal step in India's transition to a bio-based, low-carbon economy.'
'With its strong agro-industrial base, Maharashtra can emerge as the nation's leading bioplastic market. I humbly urge all stakeholders to support MSMEs through policy incentives, regulatory support, and awareness-building. Together, we can shift from fossil-based pollution to plant-based progress,' she said.
Stefan Barot, President – Chemicals Division, BCML said, 'With an annual capacity of 80,000 tonnes, Balrampur Bioyug will produce 100% bio-based, industrially compostable PLA—offering a credible and scalable solution to the global plastic crisis.'
'As a versatile polymer derived from renewable resources, PLA has the mechanical strength and durability needed for a wide range of uses while being far more sustainable,' he said.
'It is ideally suited to replace banned single-use plastic items such as straws, disposable cutlery, trays, bottles, and curd cups—without compromising on performance or safety,' he added.

7 of 47 projects incomplete, Smart City shift to NMC begins
Nagpur: Of the 47 projects implemented under the Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL), seven remain incomplete as the agency prepares to wind up operations and transfer all assets to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) by December 31, 2025. Nagpur, selected under the Centre's Smart Cities Mission in 2016, was initially expected to complete its projects by June 2021. The deadline was extended to June 2023, then June 2024, and finally to December 2025. Under the mission, NSSCDCL received Rs741.63 crore from the central govt, with projects divided into two key components: Rs524 crore Smart and Safe City Project which introduced 17 smart solutions including CCTV surveillance, an integrated command and control centre, and traffic monitoring systems; and the Rs741.62 crore area-based development (ABD) plan to revamp 1,743 acres in Pardi, Bharatwada, Bhandewadi and Punapur in East Nagpur. Funding was further boosted by then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who sanctioned Rs400 crore from the state govt for Smart and Safe City, while Rs124 crore came from the central Smart Cities fund. Additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant told TOI that the process to hand over projects, including the smart solutions component with 3,698 CCTV cameras installed across the city has already commenced. NMC has already entrusted KELTRON with the operation and maintenance of CCTV cameras for a period of five years. "NMC will pay Rs 25 crore per annum to the Kerala state-based firm for this purpose," Pant said. A decision is still pending on the robotics scavenger project, a mechanised drain-cleaning system, for which a seven-year operation and maintenance contract is proposed. While the CCTV network has proved vital for crime detection, traffic regulation and flood monitoring, other Smart City assets have fared poorly. The 65 smart kiosks installed in 2018 to provide citizens one-stop access to civic, state and central govt services remain non-functional due to the absence of integration with key departments. Despite having IT professionals, the NSSCDCL failed to ensure that these kiosks remain operational. Now these kiosks, installed with taxpayers' money, are lying defunct. Once the handover is complete, NMC will take on the responsibility for operating, maintaining, and monetising the entire Smart City infrastructure. With manpower shortages and financial constraints already weighing heavily on the civic body, experts warn that without proper planning, high-value assets could meet the same fate as the smart kiosks. Growth to get lift, boost for demand after GST rationalisation, say economists
Synopsis Economists predict that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalization will significantly boost domestic demand, providing crucial support to the Indian economy amidst challenges posed by US tariffs. The simplified tax structure, particularly benefiting essentials, is expected to increase disposable income for lower and middle-income consumers. Domestic demand will get a boost after goods and services tax (GST) rationalisation, economists said, providing support to the economy that's seen likely taking a hit from the 50% duty levied on Indian imports by the US.'At a time where consumption demand has been uneven and felt pressure from high inflation and low nominal wage growth over the last couple of quarters, the proposed GST reforms are a positive, especially for essentials, aiding consumption by the lower and middle income class,' said Sakshi Gupta, principal economist at HDFC Bank. QuantEco Research economist Yuvika Singhal said, 'Any kind of reduction in taxes is positive for consumption as it leaves higher disposable income in the hands of consumers.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in his Independence Day speech on Friday that GST reforms would provide relief to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), local vendors and GST cuts on items will range from durables such as refrigerators and air conditioners to packaged foods and medical supplies. 'It's a much-needed development, and GST rationalisation is the need of the hour, apart from other reforms,' said Paras Jasrai, associate director at India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra). The Centre has proposed that India move to a simpler, two-slab structure from four currently--retaining the 5% and 18% rates and scrapping the 12% and 28% levies, ET reported earlier. 'With indirect taxes having a wider reach, GST reforms can deliver a stronger boost,' said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank. 'Rural consumption is improving but not broad-based enough to offset weak urban demand, so a fiscal push was needed—and these reforms provide that.'Jasrai said that lower stabs and tax rates will give consumption demand a significant boost, especially amid the uncertainty over trade tariffs that are seen impacting external President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% penalty for importing Russian oil. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have cut global growth forecasts amid the prevailing trade uncertainty. Even so, India's domestic strength will stand out.'Since domestic consumption makes up a larger share of the economy, India will remain resilient despite global headwinds,' said Singhal. An increase in spending activity will also lift gross domestic product (GDP). The boost to nominal GDP growth is estimated at 0.6 percentage point over 12 months using fiscal multipliers, said Bank's Gupta said the reform could boost demand for consumer durables if GST rates on items such as ACs and TVs are reduced. 'A more notable impact could also be seen for demand for two-wheelers and cars if the current GST rate of 28% is reduced to 18%,' she highlighted that fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies will see a positive impact, depending on how and when the changes are implemented.
