Man gets 10-yr RI for sexual assault bid on minor
Kanpur Nagar Amit Verma on Tuesday convicted one Tulai Ram for attempt to physically assault a minor and speech-impaired girl, punishing him with 10 years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 20,000.

The presiding judge also sentenced him for ten years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000, punishing him under SC/ST Act. The judicial officials ordered to pay Rs 15,000 from the fine amount to the girl for her rehabilitation and compensation. Citing the provisions of section 357 A of CrPC, the judge recommended to District Legal Services Authority to provide her a sum of Rs 2 lakh as damages.
According to additional district government counsel Sushil Kumar Verma, a report was lodged by the girl's father on July 9, 2016 at Gwaltoli police station.
In his complaint, he stated that his wife had gone to collect fodder for cows from the field of one Manoj. Around 6.30pm, his 12-year-old daughter also left to be with her mother. As soon as she reached near the field, Tulai dragged her and attempted to physically exploit her.
The girl raised an alarm. Hearing her shrieks, the girl's father reached there and caught Tulai. As the girl's father and others were taking Tulai to police, he managed his escape.
Special prosecutor Pocso stated since the girl was speech-impaired she could not tell anything about the incident. In compliance of court order the district probation officer provided a support person – Vandana Singh Solanki who helped the girl to get record her statement through gestures. She narrated entire story through gestures and identified the accused in the open court.
The court observed that the girl was healthy and a competent witness. The prosecution proved its case successfully hence accused was being punished.

Further, Thirumavalavan questioned why police was reluctant to arrest the suspect's mother when both the parents were named in the FIR. About the video released by Subhashini, Thirumavalavan said 'She has been educated to speak in such a way to protect her parents. She is not speaking independently.' Human rights activist and People's Watch executive director Henri Tiphagne said, 'Only a detailed investigation can reveal if she (the mother) is guilty or not. Refraining from arresting her shows police is not independent.'

Students get Rs 500 ‘fine for long stay' at Chetpet railway station
CHENNAI: A travel ticket examiner (TTE) from the Chennai railway division allegedly extorted Rs 500 from two female college students at Chetpet railway station on Thursday. According to the victims, the TTE claimed they had been sitting on the station platform for too long. The TTE allegedly demanded a penalty of Rs 1,060 from four college students but ultimately accepted Rs 500 without issuing any receipt, the affected passengers said. He justified the charge by alleging that their prolonged stay at the station was a violation and their return journey paper tickets were not valid. The tickets were purchased at 9.30 am in Tambaram. However, officials from the Chennai railway division clarified that return journey tickets are valid for both onward and return trips and remain valid until the last local train of the day in the section. One of the victims, a 20-year-old student, told TNIE that she had travelled from Chrompet to Chetpet with three of her friends. 'We bought four paper return tickets from Tambaram to Chennai Beach around 9.30 am. Each ticket cost Rs 20. I boarded the train at Chrompet while my friends travelled from Tambaram. After we met our friends at Chetpet, all four of us reached Chetpet station around 2.15 pm waiting for a train,' she said. Around 3 pm, a TTE approached them and questioned why they had been sitting there for so long. 'He claimed our tickets were invalid. He took us to a room along with four to six other passengers and said we had to pay a penalty of Rs 1,060 for ticketless travel. A woman TTE later came to the room, insisting us to pay the penalty. We only had Rs 500, which we paid, but were not given a receipt. The TTE took our paper tickets and refused to return it. So I purchased a new ticket and returned home,' the student added. A spokesperson from the Chennai railway division said that in cases of questionable penalty charges, complaints can be filed either with the station master or through the Rail Madad application.

NEW DELHI: The (ED) has conducted raids at three locations in Delhi's Khanpur area as part of a money laundering investigation linked to a fake call centre accused of duping US citizens by selling pirated software, official sources said Friday. The operation is being carried out under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Preliminary investigations indicate that the call centre was run by individuals who misled foreign nationals — particularly in the United States — by selling "fictitious or pirated " software under the guise of genuine products like Microsoft Windows. According to sources, the Enforcement Directorate suspects that the operators received foreign remittances amounting to approximately Rs 100 crore between 2016–17 and 2024–25.
