TN 'honour killing' case: VCK demands probe by special team, Rs 1 crore solatium
Speaking at a protest organised in Tirunelveli by the VCK to condemn the suspected honour killing of Kavin Selvaganesh, Thirumavalavan demanded a high court-monitored special investigation team to probe the murder, solatium of Rs 1 crore and police protection to Kavin's family.
Earlier, speaking to reporters after visiting Kavin's parents, the VCK chief expressed doubts if more than one person was involved in the murder. 'There are suspicions about the role of some police personnel and involvement of henchmen.
The crime happened in a particular police limit where the accused had support. The murder might not have been committed by a single person,' he said, adding the CB-CID should investigate the role of police personnel in the area also as they are known to the prime accused Surjith.
Further, Thirumavalavan questioned why police was reluctant to arrest the suspect's mother when both the parents were named in the FIR. About the video released by Subhashini, Thirumavalavan said 'She has been educated to speak in such a way to protect her parents. She is not speaking independently.'
Human rights activist and People's Watch executive director Henri Tiphagne said, 'Only a detailed investigation can reveal if she (the mother) is guilty or not. Refraining from arresting her shows police is not independent.'

Common Central Secretariat not just new buildings, direction of country will be set from here: PM Modi
Underlining the administrative reforms undertaken by his government over the past 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the new central secretariat building he inaugurated was not merely a building, but would be the site of deliberations for making India a developed country. 'These are not only some new buildings and ordinary infrastructure. In Amrit Kaal, the policies of Viksit Bharat will be made here, important decisions for Viksit Bharat will be taken. In the coming decades, the direction for the country will be set from here,' he said. Over the past 11 years, he said around 1,500 obsolete laws and 40,000 compliances had been done away with. He said with the use of Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and mobile, delivery of government schemes had become transparent and free of leakages. Earlier in the day, the PM inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan 3, the first of the 10 Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings proposed by the government as a part of its Central Vista redevelopment plan. The building, located on Janpath, will house offices of the Ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, Petroleum and Natural Gas and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. In the evening, he addressed a gathering on Kartavya Path, with ministers including Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, MPs, bureaucrats and government employees in attendance. At Kartavya Path, he said it was time to change the way the government thinks of files. To the employees who will be shifting into the new building, he said if a file that affects one lakh people is delayed on their desk, it means that one lakh human days are wasted. He said important ministries of the Union government, including Home Affairs, were working out of buildings constructed by the British colonial government. 'Workers here did not have adequate space, light or ventilation,' he said. He said those working at the new complex would a good working environment. He said Union government ministries operate out of 50 different locations across Delhi, with some working from rented spaces that cost the government `1,500 crore a year in rent. The PM also said 8,000 to 10,000 employees have to go from one building to another every day, leading to higher expenditure and traffic congestion. 'The grand Kartavya Bhavan and other major infrastructure projects are not only a testament to India's pace but also a reflection of its global vision,' he said.

Fake ED officers rob trader of Rs 70 lakh, gold
1 2 Vijayawada: In a shocking case of impersonation and organised robbery, four individuals — two of them dressed in police uniform — allegedly posed as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and fled with Rs 70 lakh in cash and some quantity of raw gold from a jeweller near Medikonduru on Sunday. The incident came to light after the trader lodged a formal complaint with the local police. According to Medikonduru circle inspector Nagul Meera, the complainant, Mani Jagadeesh, is a resident of Guntupalli in Ibrahimpatnam mandal. He is a recent entrepreneur, who opened a gold and silver testing shop named Sri Swami Samartha Gold & Silver Testing Centre in Vijayawada last month. Prior to this, Jagadeesh worked at a similar shop in Rajamahendravaram, where he came in contact with a person named Ranjith Maruthi Peta. Around 15 days ago, Ranjith contacted Jagadeesh and informed him about the availability of raw gold at Rs 5,000 per gram. Acting on the offer, Jagadeesh purchased five grams of raw gold through an unidentified person, paying Rs 25,000. Satisfied with the initial transaction, Jagadeesh later decided to procure two kilograms of raw gold at Rs 58 lakh per kilogram. On Sunday, Jagadeesh, Praveen, Ranjith, and a few others began their journey from Palnadu district's Sattenapalli in two vehicles after holding discussions about the gold trade. Jagadeesh's car was intercepted on the outskirts of Medikonduru by people in another vehicle. Four individuals, including two dressed as police officers, confronted the group. Claiming to be ED officials, the impersonators threatened the victims and forcibly took away Rs 70 lakh in cash along with the raw gold that was in Jagadeesh's possession. Following the incident, Jagadeesh approached the local police on Monday and filed a formal complaint. He also reported that Ranjith Maruthi Peta, who facilitated the deal, since went missing and was untraceable. Medikonduru police have registered a case based on Jagadeesh's complaint and have launched a manhunt for the suspects. Efforts are underway to track down the culprits using surveillance footage and mobile data records.
