Fewer use cases take toll on Fastag growth
Fastag, the modern electronic payment system for vehicle owners and the entire travel ecosystem, is stagnating, with almost negligible growth in the last financial year. Even the number of transactions and banks going live on the payment method remained sluggish during the year.Lack of evolution of new use cases for Fastag, beyond toll payments, is one of the key factors hindering its growth, said people in the know.'Toll payments are undertaken by consumers only that many times in a month or a year, and even for commercial vehicles, almost the entire base has been already covered, and the sector is also not growing exponentially,' said a top executive at a digital payments firm which processes Fastag payments. 'Overall, the payment method has stagnated at a certain level.'Data shared by the National Payments Corporation of India , which powers settlements on Fastag, showed 350-380 million transactions are processed on Fastag every month, which has stayed constant since January 2024. In terms of fund settlement, it has hovered between Rs 6,000 and Rs 6,500 crore in the same period. Around 38 banks are currently active on Fastag, unchanged since May 2023.While payment methods are not directly comparable, for context, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the most popular digital payment method, currently has 675 banks live on the platform. In May 2023, there were 445 banks. While Fastag was initiated with the aim of digitising highway tolls, its use cases were conceived to be eventually expanded to everything concerning a vehicle such as fuel purchases, and parking payments, among others.'While a limited number of large commercial properties like shopping malls have started using Fastag as a payment method for their parking fees, fuel has shown almost no adoption,' said the founder of a fintech startup offering this service. The high cost of installing Fastag-capable gates and tag readers has discouraged smaller commercial estates from adopting them.'A large mall might be processing around Rs 30 to 40 lakh in parking payments per month, for that, the installation and maintenance might be a bit cumbersome,' the founder added. He said the average cost of installing a single gate could be around Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh, in addition to maintenance cost.'There is no margin to be made on fuel payments, hence that use case is also not picking up,' said the executive of a digital payments firm cited above.Kerbside parking, one of India's most popular ways of parking vehicles, has also shown no signs of adopting Fastag as a payment method, with transactions mostly through QR codes or cash.Industry insiders also pointed out that the overall disillusionment among fintech startups on generating revenue from digital payments is one of the major reasons behind private firms not taking any fresh initiative on payments. They added that UPI grew in popularity due to large marketing spends into the ecosystem which incentivised customers towards adoption.'No new-age fintech is pumping funds into digital payments right now. Fastag and such payment methods needed incentives to get more customers to use them readily, in the absence of incentives new use-cases are not building up,' said the founder of a digital payments startup.Fastag is also plagued by inefficient bank-led customer service, especially during instances of blacklisted tags or recharge issues. While PhonePe, and Amazon Pay are among Fastag distributors, they rely on banks for customer service, where the experience is often subpar.'Banks make money on the float they get through these payments, otherwise there is hardly any incentive for others to offer superior customer experience,' said the founder cited above.

BSE SME platform crosses 600 listings
Mumbai: India's small and medium enterprises (SME) listing platform, the BSE SME platform, has crossed the milestone of 600 listings, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) said on Tuesday. Overall money raised by these companies since their inception stands at Rs10,652 crore, with an overall market capitalisation (mcap) of Rs1,84,574 crore, according to the exchange. 'Not only has the platform crossed the milestone, but it has grown in strength from strength in recent years, raising more money with higher issue sizes,' the BSE said. In the period since January 2023 to date, the average issue size for SME IPOs on the platform has gone up to Rs32 crore, versus Rs 11 crore in the period from March 13, 2012, to December 31, 2022. Further, the funds raised to date have gone up to Rs6,109 crore in the period since January 2023 to date, versus Rs 4,544 crore in the period March 13, 2012, to December 31, 2022, the BSE stated. These bigger and bolder moves by the SMEs on the platform are also getting reinforced by their movement to the mainboard, with nearly 1/3rd of the overall companies making that transition, the exchange said. The SMEs listed on the platform also represent the economic opportunity present across the country. SMEs listed on the BSE SME platform have a pan-India presence as well as representation of various industries and segments of the country, making it a holistic picture of the economic growth of the country. 'With over 7 crore SMEs, 30 per cent share in GDP, 44 per cent share in exports and nearly 60 per cent share in employment, MSMES presents an unparalleled economic opportunity to achieve Viksit Bharat by 2047,' BSE Ltd MD and CEO Sundararaman Ramamurthy said. According to the BSE, to aid the ecosystem, the BSE SME platform recently launched a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool to vet SME IPO documents before they can be formally filed with the exchange. Not only does this system improve the validation process of the document filing, but it also improves the efficacy and timelines in the listing process. 'Our steady and consistent growth, along with the technological appendages that are being developed, demonstrates the overall resolve of the exchange and platform to accelerate the ambition of budding entrepreneurs,' BSE's Head of Listing and SME Platform, Radha Kirthivasan, said.

VMC focuses on improving VLT collection
Vijayawada: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dhyana Chandra HM on Tuesday said that the vacant land owners in Vijayawada city must pay the Vacant Land Tax. He said while the tax demand from vacant lands in the previous financial year was Rs 237 crore, the actual collection stood at only Rs 19 crore, which is very low, he stated. Dhyana Chandra chaired a special committee meeting held at the VMC office. The committee has been formed to address the pending dues of VLT in the city and increase the revenue of the VMC. Land owners of several hundred vacant land sites in Vijayawada city are not paying the VLT for a long time. Earlier, with the approval of NTR district collector G Lakshmisha, the Vacant Land Tax Committee was constituted and its first meeting was held on Tuesday. Dhyana Chandra during the meeting proposed a collaborative approach involving the VMC Revenue and Town Planning Departments, along with the District Revenue Department and the District Stamps and Registration Department to collect the addresses of the vacant land owners and serve demand notices. The VLT committee has initiated steps to obtain vacant land documentation from VMC departments and share them with the Stamps and Registration Department. Based on registered sale deeds, the authorities will identify landowners and issue tax notices using the addresses recorded in official documents. The commissioner has instructed for a preparation of a detailed list of tax defaulters, categorised by circle, ward, and secretariat, identification of all vacant landowners and issuance of tax notices, strict enforcement of tax payments from all landowners, regardless of their current location and initiation of legal proceedings against those who fail to clear outstanding dues. One major reason identified for the poor recovery is that many landowners are unaware of their pending dues. The VMC staff could not trace the addresses of the many landowners due to change of homes. Many owners of the vacant lands are living in other cities, other states and other countries and it made the VMC staff to trace their addresses and send the tax notice. The meeting was attended by RDO K Chaitanya, District Registrar PVV Durgaprasad, Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) G Srujana, Chief City Planner Sanjay Ratnakumar and other officials.
