‘Jagannath Dham' row: Naming of Digha shrine sparks controversy, prompts reflection on temple's spiritual legacy
Naming of a newly built Jagannath temple in Digha sparks controversy
BHUBANESWAR: When Shakespeare wrote the famous line 'what's in a name' in 'Romeo and Juliet', little did he know that its significance will be felt centuries later.
Recently, the West Bengal govt decided to name a newly consecrated
Jagannath temple
in Digha as '
Jagannath Dham
', sparking agony and resentment at the Lord's original home in Puri.
On April 30, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee designated the shrine as 'Jagannath Dham', drawing sharp criticism from various quarters, particularly from Odisha.
Various stakeholders, including the public, servitors of Puri temple, king Dibyasingha Deb, religious gurus like the Shankaracharya, Padma awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik, opposition political parties and Odisha govt have in unison argued that the use of the word 'Dham' with the shrine infringes upon the spiritual and cultural legacy of the original Jagannath Temple in Puri, which has historically been known as 'Jagannath Dham' and is one of the four Dhams of Hinduism in India.
As the controversy continues to simmer with pressure mounting on Mamata govt to drop 'Jagannath Dham' from the Digha temple, experts have raised important questions about religious nomenclature, cultural ownership and the delicate balance between preserving traditional sanctity and establishing new places of worship in modern times.
'Names carry cultural weight and historical significance. The name Jagannath Dham holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for millions of devotees.
People feel emotionally connected to the temple's identity. The name represents centuries of faith, devotion, and cultural practices that cannot be altered,' said Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati.
Religious experts emphasised that 'Jagannath Dham' is not merely a physical structure, but embodies the collective faith of generations. Chairman of
Puri Jagannath Temple
managing committee and scion of the erstwhile royal kingdom of Utkal, Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb pointed out that ancient texts and scriptures mention this name, establishing its historical authenticity.
Deb said the temple's architecture, rituals, and festivals are deeply intertwined with its nomenclature.
'We will soon come up with a set of guidelines and advisories for other Jagannath temples to follow,' state law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said.
Devotees criticised the Odisha govt for reacting to the situation 'late'. 'The name 'Jagannath Dham' was not given overnight. The previous BJD govt knew that the West Bengal govt was building a replica of Puri temple in Digha.
The current govt should have intervened much earlier and advised the Bengal govt on the 'naming' issue,' said Priyadarsan Pattanaik, convener of Jagannath Sena, a cultural outfit.
'What's more shocking is that several servitors from Puri Jagannath Temple performed puja at the Digha shrine during the consecration and played an active role in the temple's construction. They should have advised the Bengal authorities not to name it Jagannath Dham,' said Sudarsan Pattnaik, noted sand sculptor and former member of Jagannath temple managing committee.
Odisha govt authorities said they were unaware of the Bengal govt's plan about the naming of the Digha temple. 'Our govt took notice of public sentiments and promptly intervened after learning about the nomenclature following the temple's inauguration. Our CM has already written to his Bengal counterpart, seeking immediate removal of the name. We have not received any response from the Bengal govt yet,' a senior govt official said.
According to the Odisha govt, it is not opposed to construction of new Jagannath temples elsewhere. 'We welcome Jagannath temples as they propagate Jagannath culture. However, there should not be any attempt to compromise and tweak the Moola-Pitha's (real abode) established tradition and culture,' Harichandan added.
Mamata, meanwhile, has accused the BJP of 'jealousy and discrimination'. 'When Mamata Banerjee builds skywalks at Dakshineswar or Kalighat, nobody raises a question. When I celebrate Durga and Kali puja, there's no outrage. Then why this animosity over Jagannath Dham? Why is there so much jealousy,' she asked.

Puri soaked in religious fervour as Rath Yatra begins
Puri: Religious fervour gripped the pilgrim town of Puri as the grand Rath Yatra commenced on Friday with the holy triad -- Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra -- stepping out of their sanctum sanctorum in the divine 'Pahandi' ritual. In a convergence of devotion, over 10 lakh devotees gathered in Puri to witness the Rath Yatra. Thousands of people pulled the ropes attached with chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings on the Grand Road from near the 12th-century shrine here towards Shree Gundicha temple, around 2.6 km away. Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and several other dignitaries were among those who pulled the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra. Amid chanting of 'Jai Jagannath' and 'Hari Bol', beating of cymbals and blowing of trumpets and conch shells, the 'Taladhwaja' chariot of Lord Balabhadra first started rolling at 4.08 pm. It was followed by Devi Subhadra's 'Darpadalana' chariot and finally Lord Jagannath's 'Nandighosha'. While the devotees were pulling the chariots, the priests surrounded the deities on the chariots as the procession made its way through the Grand Road of this temple town. While thousands of people pulled chariots, lakhs of others also reached the seaside temple town to participate in the festival. The chariot pulling started after Puri's titular king, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, performed 'Chhera Pahanra' (sweeping of chariots) on all three chariots. Wooden horses of different colours were fitted on three chariots before they were pulled by the devotees. Earlier, the trinity, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath, ascended their respective chariots after over two-hour long ceremonial 'Pahandi' ritual. During 'Pahandi', the three wooden idols were carried to the chariots from the 12th-century Jagannath temple. Odissi dancers, folk artistes, music players and many other groups drawn from different parts of the State performed before the idols. The Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, along with selected disciples, visited the three chariots after the deities were placed on them. The 81-year-old seer came near the chariots in a wheelchair. The Shankaracharya's visit is also part of the Rath Yatra rituals. Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Puri MP Sambit Patra, Odisha ministers and several others witnessed the ceremonial Pahandi, one of the major attractions of Rath Yatra in Puri. The festival is being held amid unprecedented security arrangements with deployment of around 10,000 personnel of Odisha Police, Central Armed Police Force, NSG and others. 'We have made all possible arrangements for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra,' DGP Y B Khurania told reporters, adding that over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras were installed to keep a watch on the crowd. ADGP (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar said the arrangements are made in view of some information following the Pahalgam terror attack. 'Several Central government agencies are collaborating with Odisha Police, including NSG snipers, Coast Guard drones and anti-drone systems. Canine teams and Odisha's anti-sabotage units are also engaged in duty here,' he said.

Patnaik expresses anguish over inordinate delay in Rath Yatra in Puri
Bhubaneswar, Expressing deep anguish over the "terrible mess" in the conduct of Lord Jagannth's Rath Yatra in Puri this year, Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik on Saturday prayed to the almighty to forgive those responsible for the development. Patnaik expresses anguish over inordinate delay in Rath Yatra in Puri Patnaik, who is also a former five-time chief minister of Odisha and president of BJD, said that it is impossible not to voice concern and anguish over how things unfolded during the most sacred event in the state. Patnaik, who is recuperating at a hospital in Mumbai after surgery, in a post on X said: "We aren't here to point fingers or blame the administration for yesterday's inordinate delay in pulling the Nandighosh chariot. But it's impossible not to voice our deep concern and anguish over how things unfolded during the most sacred event in our state." Patnaik also mentioned that it is hard to forget how, last year, Lord Balabhadra's idol slipped during the 'Adapa Bije Pahandi' , a moment that left countless devotees shaken. "And now this year, we witnessed Nandighosh chariot still standing at the Singhadwar till 7:45 pm, only to move a few metres before the day ended," Patnaik said in a long social media post. "That understandably has left lakhs of devotees who came from all over the world to witness this unique event completely disenchanted and disillusioned," the former chief minister said. Patnaik said hundreds of devotees also got injured due to poor crowd management. "All we can do is pray: May Mahaprabhu Jagannath forgive all those responsible for the terrible mess that has overshadowed this divine festival this year. I hope it leads to deep introspection by all in government," he said. The chariots were scheduled to reach Gundicha temple, considered the aunt's place of the deities, by the evening of Friday. But they had to be stopped on Grand Road as Lord Balabhadra's Taladwaja chariot got stuck while negotiating a turn, preventing the other two from advancing. Explaining the delay, the Odisha Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Friday said, "Due to favourable weather conditions, the number of devotees was nearly one and a half times higher than usual. Those who came specifically to pull Lord Jagannath's chariot will have the opportunity to do so tomorrow." The minister announced that chariot pulling was suspended for the day at 8 pm. He said all the rituals were completed in accordance with the schedule. Devotees on Saturday resumed pulling the chariots of Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath, after the Rath Yatra in Puri was halted on June 27 night.
