100 beneficiaries receive hearing aids under CMCHIS in Salem
Salem District Collector R. Brindha Devi distributed hearing aids to 100 beneficiaries under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) in a function held at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital (GMKMCH) on Saturday.
The beneficiaries received hearing aids worth ₹8,000 each at a total cost of ₹8 lakh.
Speaking at the function, Collector Brindha Devi said, 'Hearing impairment can affect anyone from children to the elderly. Nerve issues, accidents, age-related issues, and bacterial infections in the centre of the ears can cause hearing loss. Modernised equipment is used at the ENT Department of Salem GMKMCH to conduct hearing tests on children and elderly persons. For people with hearing issues, hearing aids worth ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 are provided under the CMCHIS free of cost,' Ms. Brindha Devi added.
The collector announced that 3,000 people received hearing aids through the CMCHIS program over the past three years. 'The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) has been conducting screenings for children using modern equipment. If hearing issues are detected in children under the age of six, cochlear implant surgeries are performed under the CMCHIS. Additionally, the GMKMCH PET scan center has been established over the past four years with an investment of ₹12 crore for cancer treatment,' she added.
Explaining the services provided at the Secondary Care Hospital at Ammapet in Salem Corporation, Ms. Brindha Devi said that to provide medical services in nearby locations, a secondary care hospital was constructed at a cost of ₹43.65 crore in Ammapet. In the past four months, 6,500 patients availed various services in the hospital and nine surgeries were also performed, the collector added.
The Collector later provided 2,495 bed sheets to GMKMCH. Hospital Dean J. Devi Meenal, Superintendent R. Rajkumar, and officials from concerned departments participated in the function.

Tiruchy MGMGH resumes bypass surgeries after three-year break
TIRUCHY: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) has resumed performing cardiac bypass surgeries, which were suspended since 2022. According to hospital sources, a triple vessel coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery was performed on a 55-year-old patient from Kumbakonam last Thursday. A multidisciplinary team led by cardiac surgeon Dr Ashwini performed the surgery, under the supervision of Dean Dr S Kumaravel. The surgery was performed under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). The patient was discharged on June 4. Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Dean Dr. Kumaravel said, 'We were not able to perform such procedures earlier due to shortage of cardiothoracic surgeons and limitations in policy. But now, with support under the National Health Mission (NHM) and formalised MoUs, we will be operating on all patients who require bypass surgery here.'

MBBS, BDS application forms to be available from June 6
Application forms for admission to state quota seats in MBBS and BDS programmes will open up on June 6, Health Minister M. Subramanian announced on Wednesday. The Minister held a consultation with the heads of private and government medical and dental colleges. The admission process would commence early to enable scrutiny of the applications diligently. In the previous years the government had waited until the declaration of NEET and as a result there was not much time to scrutinise the applications, resulting in errors, he explained. Candidates must include their NEET registration number while filling in the applications. The final merit list will, however, be based on the results provided by the National Testing Agency. Candidates have been given the opportunity to wait till the declaration of NEET results. Such candidates must apply within five days of declaration of NEET results, the medical education has decided. Mr. Subramanian has instructed private medical and dental colleges to be transparent about the fee structure, giving a break up of the various components, such as tuition and hostel fees and any other amount that is being collected. Earlier in the day the Minister launched training programmes for health care workers. There is no reason to panic over COVID 19 infection, health minister M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday. Until Tuesday 216 persons have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and they are getting better. Those who have been infected are being monitored, the minister said. To remain safe people have been advised to wear masks in crowded places to avoid contracting infections. A person who has been diagnosed with COVID 19 infection and dies is tested for various other parameters as well to identify the cause of death. 'We do all the investigations including for COVID 19. The person may have died of other underlying causes and COVID 19 infection may have been an incidental finding,' health department officials said at a media briefing here on Wednesday on the sidelines of launch of training programme for health workers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and fatty liver disease. The field workers will raise awareness about the diseases and those who have them would be urged to get screened at primary health centres. The health department has also planned to launch 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' in a fortnight in Chennai, the Minister announced. Under the scheme people can seek master health check-ups nearer to home. At the camps people can also get the required persons with disabilities certificates, persons can also get their cards under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Across the state 1,256 camps will be held by December-end.

Door-to-door survey to compile data of persons with disabilities begins in Salem district
Work has begun to compile data of all persons with disabilities in Salem district to ensure doorstep delivery of welfare benefits, said Collector R. Brindha Devi here on Wednesday. Addressing the media after inspecting the door-to-door survey at Kannankurichi, she said the State government was implementing the TN Rights Project, funded by the World Bank, through which benefits of welfare schemes are delivered directly to the homes of persons with disabilities. She added that the government has initiated steps across all districts to visit every household, identify all categories of persons with disabilities, and create a comprehensive social data platform with their complete details. This data collection drive began on June 2, 2025, and is currently under way, with field staff visiting homes in both urban and rural areas. The Collector said that when field staff visit homes, persons with disabilities may present documents such as their national identity card, Aadhaar card, bank passbook, and ration card for verification. In households without persons with disabilities, only the Aadhaar card and ration card can be shown. To ensure that no person with a disability is left out, a dedicated mobile application has been developed for this purpose, enabling accurate and complete data collection from every household. This initiative will ensure that all future assistance reaches persons with disabilities directly at their place of residence without delay. Magizhnan, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, and other concerned officials were present during the inspection.
