Bihar Govt Set To Give Women Employees Houses On Rent Near Offices
Last Updated:
A DM-led committee will ensure the houses are safe and have basic amenities like water and electricity. The rent will be fixed by the concerned Sub-Divisional Officer
The Bihar government has announced a new housing benefit for its women employees ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in 2025. In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday, it was decided that women working in state government departments will now be eligible to receive rented accommodation near their workplaces. According to political commentators, the move comes as part of a broader push to introduce welfare measures in the run-up to the polls.
This new scheme is expected to benefit approximately 4 lakh women. According to S. Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, this initiative aims to enhance both the safety and convenience of women employees.
No HRA
Women opting for this scheme will not receive House Rent Allowance (HRA), which is typically provided to employees to cover rental expenses besides their salary.
Houses On Lease
The government will lease houses from private owners, seeking applications from interested landlords through Expressions of Interest.
Committee Selection
A committee led by the District Magistrate will be formed to select suitable houses for the scheme.
The committee will ensure that the houses are safe and equipped with essential facilities such as electricity and water. The rent will be determined by the respective Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO).
Priority Beneficiaries
Initially, this facility will be available to women employees working at the district and division levels.
Rural Process
For women employees in blocks or villages, an application must be submitted to the concerned SDO via their office head to initiate the process.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to support women in Bihar. In Bihar, women are given 35% reservation in government jobs. This reservation goes up to 50% in panchayat and urban local body elections. Additionally, women also receive 50% reservation in primary teacher recruitment. The government asserts that this new scheme is another significant step towards providing better and safer living conditions for women.

NDA will break 2010 record in upcoming polls: Minister
Patna: Social welfare minister Madan Sahni on Friday claimed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would achieve a historic win in the next assembly elections, crediting CM Nitish Kumar's inclusive development model for this confidence. Speaking to the reporters during the party's 'Jan Sunwai' programme, Sahni said the NDA was targeting 225 out of Bihar's 243 seats in the upcoming polls. "We will better the 2010 poll performance and set a new record in the next polls," Sahni claimed. In the 2010 elections, the NDA had won 206 seats, leaving the RJD with only 22, its worst showing since the party's formation in 1997. He added that while the NDA remains unified and coordinated, internal discord continues to plague the opposition INDIA bloc, particularly over seat-sharing arrangements and the choice of a chief ministerial face. In a related development, JD(U) launched a scathing attack on the RJD's track record, saying that Bihar witnessed 118 massacres during the RJD regime, leading to the deaths of many innocent people. The JD(U) claimed Nitish Kumar's govt, in contrast, has consistently worked for the upliftment and dignity of Dalits. "Right from 2005, when Nitish came to power, his govt has implemented several revolutionary measures for the social, economic and political empowerment of Dalits," read a joint statement by JD(U) spokespersons Parimal Kumar, Himraj Ram, Anupriya and Madhurendra Pandey. They highlighted increased budget allocations and the launch of numerous schemes for Dalit welfare. "Special SC/ST police stations were established in every district. To ensure quick and fair justice, special courts were set up, and special public prosecutors were appointed," the statement added. These steps, they said, not only ensured timely justice but also restored dignity to the Dalit community. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Meghalaya to strengthen resident safety law in wake of Sohra honeymoon murder
Shillong, In the wake of the sensational honeymoon murder in Sohra, the Meghalaya government on Friday decided to strengthen an existing legislation aimed at ensuring the safety of state residents and curbing the entry of criminal elements posing as tourists. The move comes weeks after the gruesome murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed during a honeymoon trip to Sohra, in a plot orchestrated by his wife and her lover. "The cabinet today decided to revisit the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act , 2016, an existing state legislation, to add more teeth to this Act to minimise the possibility of criminal elements entering Meghalaya in the guise of tourists," Cabinet spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said after the cabinet meeting here. "The government will soon come up with a formal proposal to further strengthen the MRSSA," he said. The 2016 Act was originally introduced to enhance the security of Meghalaya residents through the vetting of tenants and tourists. It allows for identity verification through a tourism-specific app and has provisions similar to those under the Inner Line Permit system, which the state has long been seeking from the Centre. According to Lyngdoh, the Assembly had adopted a resolution demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya. "The matter is pending before the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. There were several queries from the Ministry which the state government had addressed," he said, adding that the Union Ministry had expressed concern since Meghalaya is a transit state to other parts of the North East. The Cabinet minister also informed that the MRSSA is already a very effective legislation, which will need a little bit of "upscale" as of now. The urgency to revisit the Act was triggered by the case involving Sonam, the wife of murdered businessman Raja. She had allegedly conspired to kill her husband along with her lover and his friends, and entered Meghalaya under the guise of a tourist. According to Lyngdoh, the Cabinet placed on record its gratitude to the entire police department for cracking this case in record time and arresting all the accused, saving the state from a "bad name".
