PBS concurs with Hajiji's GRS-Pakatan pact, insists on GRS dominance
"PBS also concurs with GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's statement that GRS would be working with Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming Sabah election," said party secretary-general Datuk Julita Majungki in a statement on Wednesday (July 30).
She reiterated PBS' stance that the cooperation should be based on GRS being the dominant partner in the electoral pact.
This aligns with discussions and decisions made in meetings between the GRS chairman and the presidents of component parties, including PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, Majungki said.
The statement clarifies PBS' position following Hajiji's announcement that GRS agreed to an electoral pact with Pakatan during the sidelines of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) annual meeting on Sunday (July 27).
Some GRS leaders were surprised by the announcement as the final decision had not yet been made by the GRS supreme council.
Majungki explained that Dr Gunsalam could not attend the Gagasan Rakyat annual general meeting due to another commitment.
She noted that Dr Gunsalam was in Beaufort to officiate the simultaneous opening of five PBS divisions' annual general meetings.
However, she highlighted that senior PBS leaders, including deputy presidents Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim and Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai, and herself, were present at the Gagasan Rakyat AGM opening.
Apart from Gagasan Rakyat and PBS, other parties in the local party coalition include Sabah STAR led by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) led by former chief minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, and Parti Usno led by former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) under Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) led by former foreign minister Tan Sri Anifah Amin, and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) led by Datuk Chin Su Phin are also part of the coalition.
Gagasan Rakyat, with 26 seats in the current assembly, is the anchor partner of the coalition, while the two non-Muslim native base parties PBS and Sabah STAR hold 13 seats between them.
SAPP and Harapan Rakyat hold a seat each, with other components having no elected or nominated assemblymen in the current assembly.
SAPP president Yong, whose party prefers GRS to go solo, stated that GRS had not met to endorse any decision for the pact with Pakatan.
PBS and Sabah STAR are working on a unity platform under GRS to contest most of the 25 ethnic Kadazandusun, Murut, and Rungus seats in the coming election. Both parties were pushing for GRS to go solo but were agreeable to minimal seats for Pakatan.

Incumbents to continue representing GRS in state polls: Joachim

TELUPID: Any incumbent of a State Legislative Assembly seat previously won will continue to represent GRS in the upcoming 17th State Election, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam. He said GRS remains a stabilising force in Sabah as it is a coalition of eight local parties committed to the state's development. Joachim, who is also acting Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president, said this political stability has driven economic growth since GRS came to power. He made these remarks while officiating the Telupid PBS annual general meeting at Kampung Telupid Community Hall. He urged PBS members here to rally behind division chief and Telupid assemblyman Datuk Jonnybone Kurum to ensure the seat remains with GRS. Describing Jonnybone as a vocal and committed representative, he said his efforts in the assembly have consistently focused on the well-being of Telupid residents. India wraps up Kashmir pilgrimage early after violence and storm damage
SRINAGAR: More than 400,000 Hindus took part in a month-long pilgrimage in contested Indian-run Kashmir, authorities said, shrugging off security worries weeks after conflict with Pakistan. The pilgrimage began on July 3 and closes officially on August 9, but organisers said that lashing rains had damaged narrow paths forcing a premature end. Official Vijay Kumar Bidhuri said in a statement late Saturday that 415,000 pilgrims had taken part. Many of the faithful began their trek to the Amarnath ice pillar from near Pahalgam, where gunmen on April 22 killed 26 mostly Hindu tourists in the Muslim-majority region. New Delhi said the gunmen were backed by Pakistan, claims Islamabad rejected – triggering a series of tit-for-tat diplomatic measures that escalated into a four-day conflict. It was the worst standoff by the nuclear-armed nations since 1999, with more than 70 people killed in missile, drone and artillery fire on both sides, before a May 10 ceasefire. New Delhi last week said that three Pakistani men who carried out the Pahalgam attack were killed during a gun battle on July 28 in forests adjacent to the hills where the cave shrine is located. A few devotees may still visit the cave, but the numbers this year fall short of the estimated half a million devotees who took part in 2024. Officials appealed to Hindus to undertake the pilgrimage, ramping up security for the event by deploying 45,000 troops with high-tech surveillance tools overseeing the gruelling trek to the cave, dedicated to Shiva, the deity of destruction. On Sunday, Indian forces exchanged fire with gunmen for a third day in Kulgam, far from the Amarnath pilgrimage route. Soldiers have killed two militants, a senior police officer said. Kashmir has been divided between the India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947, with both administering it in part and claiming in full.
