‘Rarely have I heard him want to cheat': Shreyas Iyer's nutritionist Nicole Linhares Kedia shares cricketer's IPL meal plan

Indian Express24-04-2025

Shreyas Iyer has been in top form over the past couple of months. After a series of stellar performances during the ICC Champions Trophy in March, he has returned as skipper of the Punjab Kings for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. In a quick conversation with his sports nutritionist and integrated health coach Nicole Linhares Kedia, indianexpress.com explored the diet and fitness strategies behind his impressive run. Read edited excerpts below:
Q. What does Shreyas' diet look like?
Nicole Linhares Kedia: Shreyas' meals are planned and decided upon daily based on his training load, with precise macronutrient targets for protein, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber. While no two days look the same, the structure remains consistent.
Q. Can you walk us through what he eats in a day during the IPL season?
Nicole Linhares Kedia: We focus on variety, seasonal ingredients, and traditional roots, ensuring nutrition never feels like a chore but something he genuinely enjoys and benefits from. Here's an example of a meal plan during the tournament season:
Breakfast: A power-packed antioxidant smoothie paired with a warm South Indian meal—balanced for sustained energy and gut comfort.
Lunch: A mix of protein sources like chicken, lamb, or fish with rice or bhakris, plenty of vegetables, and tasty curries or Buddha bowls.
Snacks: These vary based on his activity—examples include avocado pesto chicken toast, sweet potato with sprouts, or bone broth for recovery.
Dinner: Generally mirrors his lunch in composition, but is kept lighter if it is close to bedtime. We rotate proteins and cooking styles—tandoori grills, coconut-based stews, or baked dishes to keep it exciting while still meeting his recovery needs.
Q. How does his diet differ from when he was training for the Champions' Trophy?
Nicole Linhares Kedia: The Champions' Trophy was an ODI series while IPL is in T20 format, so his diet changes a lot. IPL includes a lot of travel, so we have to take into consideration differences in weather, water and availability of food sources while curating his meal plans. Recovery can be challenging on some days, so we have to keep that in mind as well.
Q. How does his fitness routine change from off-season to tournament season?
Nicole Linhares Kedia: Since I began working with Shreyas, there hasn't really been a true 'off-season'. He doesn't entirely switch off, and his inclination towards healthy choices remains steady throughout the year. He's deeply attuned to his body, which is an ideal trait to work with.
In terms of fitness, working closely with his strength and conditioning coach, Mr Sagar, has allowed us to align training, recovery, and nutrition into a seamless performance system. Shreyas has been consistently following the nutrition programme we designed over six months ago, and the results have been inspiring.
Q. What are some of his favourite cheat meals?
Nicole Linhares Kedia: I think Shreyas' cheat meals would just be a greasier version of what he eats anyway. His choices are innately nutritionally very healthy. Rarely have I heard him want to cheat. If at all, he would go for a good old burger or a Japanese meal without any restriction on quantity.

Bengaluru Stampede: 5 cops suspended; 2 KSCA officials resign; CM raises compensation to ₹25 Lakh

Bengaluru Stampede: Bengaluru skies lit up with firecrackers on Tuesday, June 3 — as if Diwali had come to the city early — after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched the IPL trophy for the first time in 18 years. Within a day, however, the celebrations spiralled into a tragic stampede killing 11, leading to the suspension of five senior police officers, transfer of one Karnataka government official. As per the latest developments, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has increased the compensation for the families of those who lost their lives in the Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy to ₹ 25 lakh each from the earlier ₹ 10 lakh per family. Here's what we know so far: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj was suspended, while Hemanth Nimbalkar, Karnataka's Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) was transferred. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda was among five senior police officers suspended in connection with the incident, three of whom are IPS officers. On Friday, a city court remanded four individuals — including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Head of Marketing and Revenue, Nikhil Sosale — to 14 days in judicial custody in connection with the fatal stampede. Apart from transferring officials, the Karnataka government on Saturday ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation into the stampede case. As part of the investigation, CID officials visited the office of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to gather preliminary information on the matter, ANI reported. As per ESPNCricinfo, top senior officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, have resigned from their posts, citing "moral responsibility" for the stampede. They submitted the resignations to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. The brutal stampede also left its footprints on social media. Following the tragedy, angry netizens, who were once all praise for Virat Kohli, demanded that the cricket icon be put behind bars. At least 11 people were killed in a stampede on June 4, as a tightly packed crowd celebrated the victory of their home cricket team in the Indian city of Bengaluru, the state's chief minister said. Social media users even clashed with each other over #ArrestKohli trending on X, as many users claimed the stampede was because of the organisers' failure.

Bengaluru stampede: How further disaster was thwarted on top tiers of Chinnaswamy Stadium

1 2 Bengaluru: While pain, anguish and trauma unfolded outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium Wednesday, a potential disaster was averted by the skin of the teeth inside the stadium — thanks to the swift response of alert private security personnel and police officers. By 5pm on that fateful day, as it became clear certain stands, particularly Stand 13, were overcrowded, D Bhaskar, the managing director of Supreme Care Services, a private security agency deployed by event partner DNA, could sense trouble. "Stand 13 looked dangerous. People were jumping from the upper tier to the lower level to get a better view," Bhaskar recalled. "Some even used pillars and fences to climb down. It was a crowd unlike what we usually see during IPL matches — much more aggressive and unruly." Bhaskar, drawing on his army training and two years' experience of handling RCB match security, read the situation fast enough to realise it was spiralling out of control. "Several stands were operating at over 120% capacity. Those spectators who stood up were blocking the views of those behind, which led to pushing and jostling," he said. "I feared people could fall off the upper stands straight to the ground." Bhaskar immediately approached a senior police officer at the venue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Obtén audífonos premium sin pagar absolutamente nada Top Audifonos Undo "I must thank him — he acted without any delay. Five police officers from the VIP area were immediately told to control the situation on the upper stands. They moved to the upper tiers and cleared out those threatening to act dangerously," Bhaskar said. "We told the crowd that they were under surveillance and strict action would be taken against any unruly conduct, which instilled some fear and helped calm the situation."

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest

Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.
