Asian stocks waver as investors look to tariff negotiations, earnings

Reuters22-07-2025
SINGAPORE, July 22 (Reuters) - Asian share markets drifted lower after scaling a near four-year peak on Tuesday ahead of a slate of corporate earnings, while investors took stock of tariff negotiations between the U.S. and its trading partners.
The dithering mood is set to continue in Europe where the focus will be on earnings from firms including SAP (SAPG.DE), opens new tab and UniCredit (CRDI.MI), opens new tab. EUROSTOXX 50 futures and DAX futures both dipped 0.5%, while FTSE futures eased 0.3%.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS), opens new tab hit its highest level since October 2021 in early Asian hours but was last down 0.4%. The index is up nearly 16% this year.
The S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab and the Nasdaq (.IXIC), opens new tab notched record-high closes on Monday.
The Japanese markets returned to action after a holiday on Monday following the weekend's election where the ruling coalition suffered a defeat in upper house elections, although Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba vowed to remain in his post.
Japanese shares (.N225), opens new tab, (.TOPX), opens new tab briefly jumped at the open but reversed course to trade lower by Tuesday afternoon, as the election results were largely priced in and were not as bad as investors had feared.
The yen rallied 1% on Monday, recouping some of the losses from past weeks and was last slightly weaker at 147.73 per dollar.
Kristina Clifton, an economist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said the weakening of Ishiba's leadership will open the door to more fiscal expansion that is negative for Japanese assets, including the yen.
"The bottom line is longer term Japanese government bond yields and JPY can fall if concerns about Japan's fiscal spending deepen."
Investor focus has been on tariff negotiations ahead of the August 1 deadline with the European Union exploring a broader set of possible countermeasures against the United States as prospects for an acceptable agreement with Washington fade.
The most important deals for the global outlook are with the EU and Japan, CBA's Clifton said.
"The USD reaction to the announcement of trade deals with these countries would depend on the details of the deals in our view," Clifton added, noting the dollar could turn down again against the euro and the British pound.
The euro was steady at $1.1689, after rising 0.5% in the previous session but still away from the near four-year high it touched at the start of the month. The single currency is up 13% this year as investors look for alternatives to U.S. assets bruised by tariff uncertainties.
The dollar index , a measure against six other key currencies, was at 97.905.
Investors are awaiting results this week from Wall Street giants Alphabet and Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab, as well as from European heavyweights LVMH (LVMH.PA), opens new tab, and Roche (ROG.S), opens new tab, as uncertainty over tariffs clouds the outlook.
The rumblings around the Federal Reserve's independence and whether U.S. President Donald Trump will fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell have kept investors on tenterhooks in recent weeks.
Trump appeared near the point of trying to fire Powell last week, but backed off with a nod to the market disruption that would likely follow.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday the entire Federal Reserve needed to be examined as an institution and whether it had been successful, further exacerbating concerns about the independence of the U.S. central bank.
The Fed is widely expected to hold rates steady in its July meeting but might lower rates later in the year. Market focus will be squarely on Powell's speech later on Tuesday for clues about when the Fed might ease policy.
Goldman Sachs strategists expect the Fed to deliver three consecutive 25-basis-point cuts starting in September, "provided inflation expectations remain in check amidst worries about Fed independence."
In commodities, Brent crude futures fell nearly 1% to $68.56 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude slipped 1% to $66.51 per barrel.

Italy to tell EU terms for UniCredit's BPM bid remain despite deal collapse

ROME, July 29 (Reuters) - Italy will tell the European Union the terms it imposed on UniCredit's bid for Banco BPM remain in place even after the collapse of the deal, sources said, responding to criticism from Brussels that could ultimately lead to disciplinary steps. UniCredit ( opens new tab withdrew its offer for BPM ( opens new tab on July 22, blaming government intervention for scuppering the 15 billion-euro ($17.3 billion) transaction. Days earlier, the European Commission warned Italy that it could have breached EU rules by using its so-called golden powers aimed at shielding key assets to rein in UniCredit's takeover plans, giving Rome 20 working days to reply to its objections. Italy will send a letter of reply to Brussels as early as this week which will invoke national security considerations for the use of the golden powers, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The European Commission was not immediately available for comment. In the letter Italy will also say it has no plans to withdraw the decree that set the conditions for the collapsed deal, arguing that their legitimacy was largely upheld by an Italian court ruling this month, the sources added. Among several conditions, Italy told UniCredit it had to halt activities in Russia, except for payments to Western companies, by early 2026, to prevent savings collected by Banco BPM from benefiting Moscow's economy as it continues its war against Ukraine. The court ruling due to be referenced in the letter to Brussels axed some of the terms imposed by the government, but upheld the Russia-related conditions. Italy also asked UniCredit to keep investments in Italian securities of BPM-owned fund manager Anima Holding ( opens new tab, a provision that UniCredit said the court had made non-mandatory. While the EU said corporate mergers should be vetted at the EU level to prevent member states taking unjustified measures in their regard, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti argued national security was not for European institutions to judge. Should the government fail to persuade the European Commission that its use of the golden power rules was justified, Brussels could adopt a decision ordering it to revoke the conditions. Italy's use of its 'golden power' legislation is also under EU scrutiny in a separate process called EU Pilot. ($1 = 0.8672 euros)

Sri Lanka visas to be made free for UK tourists

Sri Lanka has announced plans to waive visa fees for British travellers in a bid to boost tourism. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath reportedly confirmed that tourists from 33 new countries, including the UK, will be able to visit the island without paying visa fees at the Hotel Show Colombo 2025 on Friday (25 July). Travellers from the US, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and Australia will also be able to enter without paying visa fees, reported Travel + Leisure Asia. Mr Herath added that Sri Lanka 's government face an annual loss of up to £50m by waiving the visa fees. However, the minister expected higher tourist footfall from the free visas to make up for the loss in economic gains. According to a government press release, Mr Herath said that Sri Lanka's tourism industry is 'steadily progressing day by day', with the tourism sector expected to become a 'key contributor' to strengthening the national economy. He said: 'We have stabilised the economy, and through policy changes in tourism, we aim to ensure steady growth in arrivals.' Travellers from seven countries – China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan – have had a visa fee waiver to enter the South Asian country since September 2024, following a trial phase in 2023. British passport holders currently have to apply for a 30-day tourist visa with a $50 (£37.50) fee to visit Sri Lanka. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), Sri Lanka welcomed 2,053,465 tourists in 2024. Of these, the island hosted the most Indian, Russian and British travellers. The start date for free visa entry is unknown; however, it is expected that eligible travellers will still need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) in advance, free of charge. The Independent has contacted Sri Lanka's Ministry of Tourism and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority for comment.

SINGAPORE, July 29 (Reuters) - Singapore state investment company Temasek plans to raise its stake in Italian luxury fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna (JN0.F), opens new tab to up to 10%, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Temasek already owns just under 5% of Zegna and would acquire another 5% in treasury shares, one of the sources said. The transaction will bring additional money to the company, the second source added, defining it "a purely financial deal". Zegna currently has a market capitalisation of around $2.3 billion. Temasek will get one non-executive seat in the fashion house's board of directors next year, the sources said, adding that an announcement is expected later in the day. Temasek and Zegna declined to comment.
