Sultan Nazrin, Tuanku Zara grace artificial reef deployment programme in Pulau Sembilan

LUMUT: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, and Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, today graced the artificial reef deployment and conservation programme at Pulau Sembilan State Park.
Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah was in attendance, accompanied by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Perak Fisheries Department director Mohd Ghazali A. Manap.
A total of 12 artificial reefs were deployed by the Fisheries Department to act as barriers against trawl nets at Pulau Rumbia, in the Pulau Sembilan archipelago, during the programme.
Artificial reefs are man-made structures placed on the seabed or in waters to attract marine life, restore marine ecosystems, and support fisheries, as well as tourism activities such as recreational fishing and scuba diving.
In conjunction with the programme, a ghost net cleanup activity was also held as a key conservation initiative organised by the Perak State Parks Corporation, which involved divers from the Royal Malaysian Navy, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, as well as the Nature and Oceanography Advocate Society (NOAS).
Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara also visited the exhibition booths showcasing the collected ghost nets and planted Ambong-Ambong trees to encourage turtle landings at the Pulau Sembilan State Park.

Pahang Sultan urges collective effort to preserve Jawi script heritage

KUANTAN: Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has called on the people of the state to take the lead in reviving the spirit and use of the Jawi script. His Royal Highness said that preserving the Jawi script was not just the responsibility of schools or religious institutions but a duty shared by all levels of society. 'The Jawi script is the lifeblood and true face of Malay identity. If it were to disappear from our lives, it would be as though part of the spirit and soul of this nation had vanished. 'Let it not merely become an obsolete treasure kept in a museum, but continue to live as the pulse of life, from remote villages to cities, from administrative affairs to the limitless virtual realm,' he said. The Pahang ruler made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the International Jawi and Malay Heritage Convention 2025 here today. Al-Sultan Abdullah said that he was aware of the challenges confronting the Jawi script in the current modern age, saying that it remained seldom used in daily life, sidelined in formal communication, and increasingly distant from the younger generation. To strengthen the Jawi script, he proposed several measures, including leveraging digital technology by developing Jawi-based applications and using social media platforms to ensure it remained relevant to the younger generation. His Royal Highness added that efforts should be made by local authorities to standardise Jawi script at business premises and tourist attractions in Pahang, train more Jawi experts through regular intensive courses, and strengthen research on Malay manuscripts written in Jawi script. In the meantime, Al-Sultan Abdullah urged that the practice of wearing the baju Melayu be continued. 'It is not wrong to wear a jubah (robe), but do not forget to wear the baju Melayu. I also wish to inform you that the Pahang Royal Council will seek to introduce new ceremonial attire at the Palace, incorporating the wearing of the tanjak (traditional Malay headgear for men),' he said. A total of 200 participants, including presenters from Japan, Singapore and Brunei, took part in the two-day convention that began yesterday, which aimed, among other things, to cultivate a culture of exchanging knowledge on Jawi script, Khat, Malay language studies, and manuscripts. – Bernama

Nearly RM3mil allocated to upgrade Masai flats

MORE than RM2.7mil has been allocated for upgrading works at Taman Plentong Utama flats in Masai under the Bangsa Johor Bahagia (BJB) 2.0 project spearheaded by Yayasan Raja Zarith Sofiah Negeri Johor (YRZSNJ). State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the allocation comprised RM1.21mil from Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) and RM1.55mil from Johor Housing Development Corporation (PKPJ). He said the initiative was in line with the royal aspirations of Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, who visited the site to check on the project's progress. The project doubles as a pilot model in Johor. 'The flats comprise six blocks without lifts and house more than 1,900 residents across 480 units. 'The comprehensive upgrades involve infrastructure for social well-being and community development,' said Mohd Jafni. 'Ongoing works include the installation of LED lights, improvement of rubbish collection areas, introduction of 'Kitar Pintar' smart recycling machines, creation of green spaces and children's playgrounds as well as construction of a hall.' He added BJB 2.0 also focused on community transformation through programmes such as 'Kelab Suka Belajar', 'Jiranita Sukses' and 'Komuniti Sihat', as well as the development of a digital community centre and artificial intelligence workshop in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). 'This is proof of the state government's commitment under the leadership of Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi that public housing is not just about bricks and mortar, but also about dignity,' said the Bukit Permai assemblyman. During a recent visit, Her Majesty launched the 'Kelab Suka Belajar' initiative and mingled with both children and flat residents. The event also saw the presentation of a RM1mil cheque from the Johor government to YRZSNJ for BJB 2.0 and a RM10,000 contribution to two secondary schools under the Johor Stars Go Global programme. Launched in 2019, BJB is an initiative aimed at uplifting the living standards of Johor citizens, particularly those of lower-income communities or living in public housing. The programme's holistic approach covers infrastructure improvements, educational support, economic empowerment and environmental conservation to ensure long-term benefits for residents. It was first mooted by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Raja Zarith Sofiah, as part of their vision to create safer, cleaner and more harmonious neighbourhoods. Under the first phase, several housing projects in Johor were upgraded with better lighting, repaired walkways, improved waste management methods and upgraded community halls. BJB 2.0 builds upon these achievements by integrating modern elements such as smart recycling, digital learning spaces and health-oriented programmes to cater to evolving community needs. Mohd Jafni said the Taman Plentong Utama project would serve as a model for similar initiatives in other parts of the state. 'By combining physical upgrades with programmes that develop skills, knowledge and community spirit, we are not just renovating buildings – we are renewing lives,' he said. The project is expected to be completed in stages over the coming months, with continuous engagement between the implementing agencies, foundation and residents to ensure its success.
