Body of missing Rohingya girl found in Sungai Kerayong
KUALA LUMPUR: The body of a Rohingya girl, feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents in a drain near the MPAJ Hall in Kampung Cheras Baru, Ampang last night, was found this morning.
Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail said the 10-year-old victim's body was discovered in Sungai Kerayong, Taman Cheras Indah, near here at 11.20 am, some six kilometres from where she was reported to have fallen into a fast-flowing drain.
'The body was taken to Ampang Hospital for a post-mortem,' he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department's Water Rescue Team (PPDA) operations commander Mohamad Riduan Akhyar said the victim's body was found stuck along the riverbank and has been handed over to the police for further action.
He said 11 members of the PPDA from the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, along with rescuers from the Cheras and Bandar Tun Razak Fire and Rescue Stations, resumed the search for the victim at around 9 am today.
It was reported yesterday that the victim, identified as Nur Aida Nur Muhammad, and another child aged 11, fell into the drain. Police received the report about the incident at 6.07 pm.
Public members rescued the other child, while the strong current swept away Nur Aida. It is understood that both children were on their way home from school when the incident occurred.

Harian Metro reported that Muar sessions court judge Irwan Suainbon pronounced the sentence on the 36-year-old after the court ruled that he had failed to raise a reasonable doubt to the prosecution's case. Irwan said the accused's defence to the charge was merely a bare denial. 'The defence presented by the accused also failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'The court has determined that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. 'The court also found that the statement from the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness, was a fabrication and cannot be believed,' he said. Hamim was accused of raping a married woman, who was 19 years old at the time, in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping upon conviction. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Arif Marzuki asked the court to consider the public interest, the seriousness of the crime, and the trauma inflicted when sentencing. 'It is even more appalling that the victim had just suffered a miscarriage a few days prior to the rape,' he said. The court said Hamim's jail sentence would run from the date of his arrest on Aug 7, 2021. He is currently serving another four-year sentence for extortion by threat of accusation of an offence, under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The Tangkak magistrates' court also sentenced him to 12 months' imprisonment on Jan 20, 2022, for escaping custody on Dec 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to two years' imprisonment, a fine or both.

Judge Irwan Suainbon handed down the sentence to Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, 36, after ruling that the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt over the charge, Harian Metro reported today. In delivering his judgment, Irwan stated that the defence's arguments amounted to mere denial. 'Furthermore, the accused's defence failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'After reviewing both oral and written submissions from the prosecution and defence, the court concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. 'The court also found the testimony of the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness (DW11), to be fabricated and unreliable,' he said. Throughout the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses.
