Police treating fire that destroyed listed church building as deliberate
Emergency services were called to reports of St Mungo's Church being 'well-ablaze' around 7.50pm on August 2.
The fire burned overnight, leaving the building, which dated back to the 1960s, significantly damaged.
The moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland, Rt Rev Rosie Frew, joined members of the church to survey the damage on Wednesday, where she was brought to tears over the wreckage.
The building was described as a local landmark and boasted an eye-catching pyramid-shaped roof designed by notable Scottish architect Alan Reiach.
Police say they are now treating the fire as deliberate and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. Church of Scotland St Mungo's in Cumbernauld Church of Scotland
The roadway on St Mungo's Road has reopened but the footpath around the church remains closed.
Detective sergeant Craig Jeffrey said: 'Enquiries so far have established the fire was deliberate. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything to contact us.
'We'd also ask anyone with footage of the area at the time to please come forward.'

'Armed cops then turned up and shortly after that there was billowing out of the windows. 'I think whoever was in the flat got out.' A fire command unit arrived on scene and firefighters wearing white forensic suits were also spotted in the street. Cordons were put up and officers were standing guard. Teenagers charged after £2,000 raid on shop which left store damaged
The incident took place in Fife. Two youngsters have been charged over a £2,000 break-in. The teenagers allegedly stole items valued at £2,100. The Incident in Fife is also said to have resulted in damage caused to the store in question. A probe was launched following a report in the early hours of Wednesday, August 6. Police Scotland officers began investigating and, during the probe, the youths were detained. The force said this evening that they have since been charged. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are urging accommodation providers and guests to remain vigilant following reports of scam emails targeting hotel bookings on the Isle of Barra. "A hotel on the island has reported that a number of guests with upcoming reservations have received fraudulent emails requesting bank details to "confirm" their booking. The emails are sent from an address that is not connected to the hotel. "Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and we would encourage anyone who owns or manages accommodation - as well as those with upcoming bookings - to be alert to this type of scam.
