Popular K-pop idol collapses mid-performance, suffers seizure in ‘heartbreaking video'; fans slam gruelling training culture

Indian Express28-05-2025

A clip from the popular Japanese girl group, based in South Korea, XG, is making rounds on the internet. Published on the group's official YouTube channel, it shows member Chisa in really poor shape after she collapsed backstage post-performance. The seven-member girl group are currently on their first world tour, 'The first HOWL,' that began in May 2023, and since then, the girl group has toured over 30-plus venues around the world. As part of documenting their journey, the agency released a video from their documentary-style content called Xtra Xtra, where at one point Chisa's health raised alarm among fans, triggering harsh criticism of the intense, gruelling training conditions, while some even called out the management for posting the video without the artist's consent.
The 40-second clip going viral on social media shows Chisa being escorted out by managers and staff from the venue backstage in an unconscious state in a wheelchair. In the full episode, Chisa was not looking well from the very start and was seen resting most of the time before the show, with the manager even exploring possibilities to see if she could get more time to rest or back out. She was being fed, kept hydrated, taken care of with fever cooling patches and more. Later, the idol was seen insisting on performing. However, mid-performance, as the group made their way back to the backstage, Chisa's health declined and she collapsed, eyes welled up, burning with fever. The clip was so alarming that it triggered mass reactions from fans, genuinely concerned about how intense and damaging idol life can be.

we've seen clips of what happened to her that day, and everytime, my heart breaks. seeing her cry in these clips just hurts. i know what it feels like to push yourself doing something you love even if you're not feeling well. i have nothing but love and respect for chisa. pic.twitter.com/2vZjJAIxba

Later, Chisa herself responded on social media. She posted a message to fans apologising for worrying them. 'Sorry if watching Xtra Xtra made you worry again,' she wrote, admitting she blacked out during that time and doesn't remember much of it herself. 'So when I saw the footage, even I was surprised, I'm sure ALPHAZ (XG's fans) must've been even more shocked. I haven't seen the full thing yet, but I was totally fine yesterday, and I still am today. So please don't worry about me,' the R&B artist continued. The statement continued with Chisa revealing that the world tour pushed her to the edge, and she'd never felt her body give up like that before. 'But the fact that it happened on my very first world tour— I feel like it was just something the universe, or aliens, wanted me to experience!'
'Can we please not normalise this harsh training culture, starving the idols and making them dance like robots 24/7? This is sick,' a person commented on the video. 'I just saw the recent Xtra XG vlog, and they shouldn't have recorded or even uploaded Chisa in that condition. That is so heartbreaking and disrespectful to her. She wasn't even aware they recorded her,' another chimed in. 'And for all the fans defending this, you don't need to see an idol at their worst to respect their hard work. What Chisa went through isn't proof of dedication, it's a real person pushed way past her limit, sick and collapsing, while cameras kept rolling,' another said.
XG debuted on March 18, 2022, under XGALX, a sub-label of Avex. Despite being a Japanese group, they have been trained under the K-pop system and are promoted both ways. The group consists of seven members: Jurin (leader), Chisa, Cocona, Hinata, Maya, Juria, and Harvey. Earlier, during an interview with The Korea Herald, the group opened up about their intense training days. Harvey revealed how she once had a nosebleed during practice but kept going, shoving tissues in her nose and not stopping. Jurin, the leader, recalled when the group underwent four evaluation tests in a single month and was left sleep-deprived. Chisa added that Jurin once kept practising her rap verse until 5 a.m. and ended up so exhausted she was even reciting the verse in her sleep. K-pop training culture has often been criticised for its ruthless approach, with big names like BTS member RM, Red Velvet's Irene, Selugi, and more openly calling out the system in the past.

Appearing on CarCast , the WWE veteran said that he has injured himself multiple times while getting fight-ready for the finale. "I know the date (of my retirement match). No one else knows the date public-wise… I hurt myself a couple times in the past three months. But I pulled back... I've got a very high bar to set that I set for myself and 99 times out of a hundred, it's unrealistic… I've been in the ring a couple times. I'm gonna get in the ring again today and it's just tough, man. It is tough.' I need to show up and be me… That was the first day that I felt really good.' BTS' RM, V, Jimin And Jungkook To Address Fans Post-Discharge; BigHit Issues Crowd Warning

Last Updated: BTS' RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook will greet fans from designated locations after military discharge. BigHit warns against visiting bases due to safety concerns. The long-anticipated BTS reunion is officially on the horizon. With just days left before the final four members—Kim Namjoon (RM), Kim Taehyung (V), Jeon Jungkook, and Park Jimin—complete their mandatory military service, BIGHIT MUSIC has shared crucial updates that have sent ARMYs around the world into celebration mode. According to a June 5 statement by the label, the members will not be discharged directly from their military bases but will instead address fans in private, low-key moments at separate designated locations. These short, closed-door greetings—meant for staff and select personnel—will allow the idols to reflect briefly on their time in uniform and hint at what lies ahead. The agency emphasized that these will not be public events. RM and V, who both enlisted in December 2023 but served in different divisions (V in the elite Special Duty Team and RM in the Capital Defense Command), will be discharged and greet from Chuncheon. Jimin and Jungkook, who served together under the companionship program, will appear from Yeoncheon. BigHit clarified, 'Rather than at their respective bases, they will deliver brief messages and share their thoughts on being discharged at separate designated locations." Fans have been asked to refrain from gathering at military facilities due to safety and traffic concerns. 'There are no official ceremonies planned at the bases, and the roads and infrastructure cannot support large crowds. We kindly request your understanding and cooperation," the agency stated. While anticipation is sky-high, BigHit and HYBE have remained tight-lipped about any immediate reunion events, unlike the celebratory fanfare that accompanied Jin's return. Previous statements indicate that the group's return will be thoughtfully structured, with a phased approach to activities. Each member had wrapped up their solo schedules prior to enlistment, making an immediate group comeback unlikely. Rumors of a Jungkook world tour persist, but remain unconfirmed for now. Meanwhile, post-military life has already begun for Jin and J-Hope. The latter has returned in full force with new music including 'Dreams" (feat. Miguel) and 'MONA LISA," along with his Killin' It Girl tour, now playing to sold-out stadiums across the globe. J-Hope also recently graced the cover of Billboard. Jin dropped his solo album Happy and followed up with the heartfelt single Echo, marking his musical return in April and May 2025. As for SUGA, he continues to serve in the public sector due to a past shoulder injury, and is expected to complete his service on June 21. With his discharge, all seven BTS members will be back together for the first time since 2022. As fans hold their breath for what's next, one thing is certain—Chapter 2 of BTS is about to begin, and the world is ready. First Published: June 05, 2025, 20:00 IST

Abhishek Bachchan Pulls Off Nora Fatehi's Haye Garmi Hookstep; Amitabh Bachchan Reacts

Curated By : Last Updated: June 05, 2025, 17:35 IST Abhishek Bachchan's Housefull 5 releases on June 6. Abhishek Bachchan returns to comedy with Housefull 5, a film co-starring Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh as male leads. Ahead of the film's release tomorrow, June 6, the makers released a behind-the-scenes glimpse from Laal Pari shoot. Seconds into the video, and you'll see Abhishek pulling off Nora Fatehi's Garmi hookstep from Street Dancer 3D. His father, Amitabh Bachchan, took to X and reacted to the whole BTS clip. The shoot of Laal Pari song from Housefull 5 was a laughter riot. A video from the song's making is going viral on social media ahead of the film's release. However, the catch in the track has to be Abhishek lying on the ground and effortlessly pulling off Nora's tricky Garmi hookstep as the cast and crew cheered on. Akshay added his own flavour to the moment. Taking to X, Abhishek wrote, 'Chaotic? Yes. Glamorous? Definitely Fun? Always. Go behind the scenes of the track that's got everyone grooving! #LaalPari BTS Out Now! #Housefull5 releases in cinemas near you on 6th June 2025! Book your tickets Now!" Watch it here: The video invited a comment from Amitabh Bachchan. Numbering his X post, he wrote, 'T 5402 .. hahaha .. what a fun fun fun … !!!" Meanwhile, Housefull 5 will feature two entirely different climaxes in different theatres. Speaking about it, Sajid Nadiadwala shared, 'With Housefull 5, we wanted to take a bold creative swing that hasn't been done before internationally for any thriller film. The idea of having multiple endings, multiple experiences has been with me for 30 years. Since, i wanted to make Housefull 5 a thriller comedy, there couldn't have been a better way to execute my idea of having multiple endings than this." He added, 'It felt right to do something radical as we celebrate 75 years of Nadiadwala Grandson in the industry. Housefull is India's biggest comedy franchise and for the fifth instalment, we had to push the boundaries of what comedy can be. The idea of different endings came from a simple question: why should the audience always have just one version of the truth in a thriller? With Housefull 5, we've built a film that plays with form while staying completely rooted in entertainment. It's a killer comedy, literally, with twists that change depending on where you're watching it. and I'm proud we're doing it under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson as we mark 75 years in the business. Our legacy has always been about embracing scale, stars, and giving audiences newer experiences and Housefull 5 takes all it to another level." He further mentioned, 'It's a natural extension of the theatrical experience: creating intrigue, rewatch value, and a sense of discovery. In a world of spoilers and algorithms, we're bringing back that element of surprise. And that's where the fun begins." Housefull 5 stars an ensemble of 19 stars, comprising Akshay Kumar, joined by returning favourites and some new faces including Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Chitrangada Singh, Fardeen Khan, Chunky Pandey, Johnny Lever, Shreyas Talpade, Dino Morea, Ranjeet, Soundarya Sharma, Nikitin Dheer, and Akashdeep Sabir. The film, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, releases on June 6, 2025. Anindita Mukherjee works as a Senior Sub-Editor in the Entertainment team at News18 Showsha.
