Bettendorf High School students compete at business leadership conference
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) brought over 1,000 students and academic advisers from across Iowa to the Doubletree Hilton Convention Center in Cedar Rapids from March 30 to April 1. The annual FBLA conference brings career and technical education (CTE) students together to compete in over 100 competitive events. Students attended learning sessions with industry leaders and elected a state student officer team. The State Leadership Conference is a way to highlight the skills and knowledge gained in the classroom and apply them in real world scenarios and case studies.
Seven students from Bettendorf High School attended and competed in several business and entrepreneurship competitive events. Six students became national qualifiers after getting passed in the first round, to the delight of their advisors Sarah Roeder, Mark Pisel and Angie Mojeiko.
Bettendorf had a student who ran for state office for FBLA this year. Sreya Alla gave a campaign speech and ran an informational booth to convince voters to choose her as the next Iowa FBLA State Secretary. The members of Iowa FBLA voted for her as the next secretary for Iowa FBLA. This is the second time a state officer was chosen from Bettendorf in the last six years.
'We are so proud of our student members, who have been working diligently to prepare for the State Leadership Conference,' said Angie Mojeiko, Bettendorf FBLA adviser. 'They impressed industry leaders with their mastery of competitive event subjects, made powerful new connections with students around Iowa, and demonstrated their readiness to enter the workforce.'

Vote here for your favorite concept for a downtown Bettendorf mural
Four finalists have been chosen for the collaborative mural project between the Downtown Bettendorf Organization (DBO) and Quad City Arts – and your input is needed in the final selection process, according to a news release. Vote here for your favorite concept now through June 1. The winner will be announced at DBO's Be Downtown event on Saturday, June 7. Painting the mural will commence through June, with an unveiling planned in early July. The new mural will be on the west-facing wall at 312 17th St. It will serve as a welcome to downtown Bettendorf, enhancing community pride, beautification and increasing public awareness of the arts. Quad City Arts was contracted by DBO to facilitate this project and will work closely with the artist chosen to ensure the project aligns with the goals of the initiative – Quad City Arts is not involved in the selection process. 'This new mural will be a major step in adding to the vibrancy of downtown and encouraging visitors and Quad Citizens to stop and spend some time in our urban core,' said Ryan Jantzi, DBO executive director. 'The Downtown Bettendorf Organization will continue to invest in art to enhance livability and to contribute to the well-being of our visitors and citizens.' 'We're thrilled to be working with the Downtown Bettendorf Organization on making this mural come to life,' said Ben Gougeon, Quad City Arts' Director of Community Engagement. 'Arts are both an economic driver and one of the greatest factors in improving an area's quality of life, and it's inspiring not only to see the talent in our region that submitted their artwork, but also to see Bettendorf investing in making their downtown area a vibrant destination.' About Downtown Bettendorf Organization The mission of the Downtown Bettendorf Organization (DBO), a division of the Quad Cities Chamber, is to administer and operate programs for the general improvement and redevelopment of Bettendorf's Central Business District and to enhance its aesthetic appearance and economic future for the community and citizens of Bettendorf. Ephrata FBLA brings home 14 titles, 28 state qualifiers
Feb. 6—EPHRATA — The Ephrata High School Future Business Leaders of America club had 28 students compete in the Winter Leadership Conference at Grays Harbor College on Jan. 31. All 28 qualified in the event and 14 students were regional champions. "Well, I'm really proud of the fact that we had more regional champions this year than we did last year," FBLA Lead Advisor Scott Sanberg said. "Then I'm also proud that everybody we took qualified in one category or another." The competitions cover a range of skills depending on the topics students are competing in according to Sanberg. Some of the competitions are tests students take; others are a bit more intricate. "The competitions vary," Sandberg said. "We have role-play events where students will pick their event. One could be a sales presentation, where they don't really know what they're walking into ... They get a topic (like they're) a car salesman, and they get 20 minutes to prepare, and they try to sell someone a car. Every event is different, though." Sandberg said they have done better in recent years and last year they took 10 students to nationals and 31 students to state. The year before, two students went to nationals and 21 students to state. "We've noticed significant improvements over the last three years," Sandberg said. "We've noticed a significant growth in our students." This year Sandberg said he is optimistic they will have more students competing in the nationals, especially because they did well in the recent competition. "After feeling really good, we got our scores back today, and based on our scores and how we did, I'm feeling pretty confident that we'll probably have even more national participants this year," Sandberg said.
