CM Siddaramaiah slams SBI manager for refusing to speak Kannada
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday condemned the conduct of an SBI branch manager in Bengaluru for allegedly refusing to speak in Kannada and arguing with a customer over it.
The matter flared up when a purported video of an SBI branch manager in Anekal taluk went viral on social media, on Tuesday, in which she is arguing with a customer saying, 'I will not speak in Kannada for sure.......but Hindi'.
Despite the customer citing Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations — which requires bank staff to communicate in the regional language — the manager can be heard repeatedly declining to do so.
Referring to the incident, CM said, 'The behaviour of the SBI Branch Manager in Surya Nagara, Anekal Taluk refusing to speak in Kannada & English and showing disregard to citizens, is strongly condemnable. We appreciate SBI's swift action in transferring the official. The matter may now be treated as closed.'

'All bank employees must treat customers with dignity and make every effort to speak in the local language. I urge the Ministry of Finance & Dept of Financial Services to mandate cultural and language sensitisation training for all bank staff across India. The episode comes amid simmering linguistic tensions in several states, including Karnataka and Maharashtra, where local language advocates have pushed back against what they see as Hindi imposition. They demand that people living in or moving to these states for work should make an effort to communicate in the regional language.

Agencies Representative image The upcoming Census 2027 could deliver its final population figures by the end of the same year, a significant improvement over previous exercises, thanks to a digital-first approach that will use mobile apps for data collection and intelligent systems for real-time in the government said the time taken to publish detailed population data — including gender-wise breakups at national, state, district and taluk levels — may be compressed to just nine months from the date of enumeration. In the 2011 Census, this process had stretched over nearly two years, according to a ToI report. The government has set March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the next Census. Originally scheduled for 2020, the decadal count was delayed due to the Covid-19 2027 Census will be conducted in two parts — a house-listing phase in 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027. For the first time, enumerators will be equipped with a mobile application to capture data digitally, replacing the bulky paper forms of the past. Available in 16 languages, including Hindi, English and 14 regional options, the app is designed to be simple to use for both officials and the public. Citizens will also have the option of self-enumeration, the sources said. The app-based format will offer dropdown menus, auto-fetching of house records, and the ability to edit entries on the spot — all of which are expected to speed up data collection and reduce manual most of the responses pre-coded and digitised, the need for manual compilation of summaries or abstracts will be eliminated. The mobile application will feed directly into back-end systems using Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) tools, which will help process even semi-structured information questions requiring descriptive or non-numeric responses, officials have prepared a code directory to guide enumerators in selecting standardised entries, further cutting down processing time. To support the massive digital operation, the Office of the Registrar General of India has also built a Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, which will help track and coordinate progress across all stages. If the process unfolds as planned, this will be the fastest turnaround yet for a Census in India — and the most technologically advanced. (With inputs from ToI)

This remark appeared to subtly contrast Germany's stance with the increasingly strict vetting processes being adopted by other nations.A key draw for students is the affordability of education in Germany. Most public universities either charge no tuition fees or have very minimal costs compared to their Western counterparts. 'We believe education is a public good, not a business opportunity,' Ambassador Ackermann Katja Lasch, Director of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Regional Office in New Delhi, also addressed students and urged them not to rely on private agents for applications. Lift Karnataka's Totapuri Mango Ban: Siddaramaiah writes to Andhra CM
Bengaluru: The order issued by the Chittoor district administration in Andhra Pradesh banning the purchase of Karnataka's Totapuri Mango has put farmers in Kolar and Chikkaballapur in distress. Following this, the Karnataka government's Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, who intervened, has written a letter to the Andhra Pradesh government, requesting it to lift the ban. Now CM Siddaramaiah himself has come to the rescue of Karnataka's farmers. The Chittoor district administration has written a letter to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu asking him to instruct the district administration to lift the ban imposed on the purchase of Karnataka's Totapuri mango. It is learnt that the Chittoor District Magistrate had issued an order on June 07 prohibiting the entry of Totapuri mangoes from other states into the district. This sudden and unilateral move has caused great distress to the mango growers of Karnataka, especially those who grow Totapuri mangoes in significant quantities in the border areas. These farmers have long been linked to Chittoor-based processing units to sell their produce. The current restriction has disrupted this well-established supply chain and caused significant post-harvest losses, which will directly impact the livelihood of thousands of farmers, Siddaramaiah mentioned in his letter to the Andhra CM. Such measures taken without prior consultation or coordination are against the spirit of the cooperative federal system. I am concerned that this may lead to tension and retaliatory measures. The stakeholders are already expressing their displeasure, which may disrupt the inter-state movement of vegetables and other agricultural commodities, Siddaramaiah mentioned. "I urge you (Chandrababu Naidu) to intervene in this matter and request you to issue necessary directions to the district authorities to immediately revoke the order of the Chittoor district administration,' Siddaramaiah wrote in the letter. Siddaramaiah urged that this issue should be taken seriously and prompt steps should be taken to restore smooth movement of agricultural produce in the interest of farmers' welfare.
