Alfie Edgell scored a hat-trick as Leeds Rhinos returned to winning ways with victory over Super League's bottom club Salford. The winger came up with two tries in the first half to fend off a combative Salford side who replied through Ryan Brierley and had an equalising try disallowed for obstruction as they competed well at Headingley.Leeds ironed out the errors and Salford ran out of steam in the second half as the Rhinos stretched clear. Lachie Miller went over, Edgell grabbed his third and Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Cooper Jenkins piled on the tries. The win sends Leeds, who lost at home to St Helens last week, back into fourth place and makes it three wins out of three this campaign against the troubled Red Devils.Rumours of a strike by Salford players had circulated earlier in the week amidst ongoing financial trouble at the club which has seen wages paid late, a salary cap imposed and an exodus of 11 senior players.A meeting between players, the club and RFL officials in midweek ensued, and Salford not only turned up but started strongly, buoyed by winning only their second game of the season last week, against Castleford Tigers. They were without key players Esan Marsters, Jayden Nikorima and Loghan Lewis but after Leeds had burst into life with Edgell's first two tries, they hit back as Brierley, forced to play stand-off in the reshuffle, touched down his own chip over the defence.Injury problems meant Salford handed Declan Murphy, who impressed on his debut against Cas last week, his first start and he had a marvellous solo try ruled out for obstruction by a team-mate as the Red Devils thought they had levelled the scores just before half-time.Leeds themselves had injury issues, losing props Tom Holroyd and Mikolaj Oledzki last week, but they showed their true form in the second half.Miller raced onto Jake Connor's reverse pass to score, and after Connor had opted to kick a penalty - a sure sign of respect for Salford's performance - the visitors had Matty Foster sin-binned for tackling Brodie Croft off the ball.Edgell completed his hat-trick from the resulting penalty, and then Newman began and finished a move for his eighth try of the season.Leeds continued to make full use of numerical advantage and young prop Presley Cassell, making his debut off the bench, drew a penalty with his first run. From the resulting attack McDonnell added another to the four tries he scored at Salford earlier in the season.Jenkins rounded off the scoring by touching down his first try for the club and Connor converted to make it seven successful kicks from eight.

Marianne Vos wins opening stage of longest-ever Tour de France Femmes

Dutch rider Marianne Vos claimed a jaw-dropping 258th career victory when she prevailed in the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes, a 78.8-km hilly ride from Vannes to Plumelec on Saturday. The three-time road world champion prevailed at the top of the Cote de Cadoudal (1.7km at 6.2%) after her Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prevot cracked in the final metres to finish third behind Kim Le Court of Mauritius. While Ferrand-Prevot could not convert, she showed impressive strength when she attacked 700 metres from the line, a move that underlined the mountain biking Olympic champion's title credentials. Vos, who will wear the yellow jersey in Sunday's second stage, surged past in the final 50 metres and raised her arm in celebration. After a dozen riders were involved in a crash as the peloton rolled towards the start of the stage, Maud Rijnbeek and Laura Tomasi formed the day's breakaway. Rijnbeek went solo after 23km before Tomasi was swallowed by the peloton. Swiss rider Marlen Reusser, a major contender for the title after recently winning the Tour de Suisse, was involved in another crash at the foot of the Cote de Cadoudal, a 1.7-km ascent at 6.2%. Reusser, who finished second in the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta, later abandoned with stomach problems, her Movistar team said. Defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, who beat Demi Vollering by just four seconds last year, finished fourth in the same time as the winner.

Leeds sign Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri as Daniel Farke shores up newly-promoted squad

Leeds have made their seventh summer signing by bringing in Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Lyon for an initial €16m (£13.9m). The fee, which could rise by a further €2m in add-ons, takes Leeds' summer spending to around £75m as they bolster their squad in a bid to stay in the Premier League. The 27-year-old joins from Lyon, who he helped reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season in a campaign when he kept 13 clean sheets, after goalkeeper was a problem position for Leeds last season, even as they won the Championship. Manager Daniel Farke dropped the long-time regular Illan Meslier for back-up Karl Darlow for the last few games. A goalkeeper was always expected to be a summer priority for Farke, who has been busy in the transfer market. Leeds have also signed midfielders Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach, centre-backs Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw, left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson and forward Lukas Nmecha.

England hope Ben Stokes benefits from a rest and bowls on Sunday

England are holding their breath captain Ben Stokes will be available to bowl as they push to seal a Rothesay series victory over India at Emirates Old Trafford on Sunday. Having turned an overnight 77 into 141 for a first Test century in two years to propel England to 669 and a 311-run first-innings lead, Stokes was then conspicuously absent for the 63 overs India batted. He claimed five for 72 in India's first innings but restricted himself to fielding duties as Shubman Gill and KL Rahul helped the tourists recover from nought for two to 174 without further loss. Stokes has pushed himself to the limit this summer but there is a suspicion this is catching up with him, having struggled with cramp in his left leg when he was batting on Friday, briefly retiring hurt. Asked if he will be fit to bowl on the final day of the fourth Rothesay Test, with England looking to move into an unassailable 3-1 series lead, England assistant Marcus Trescothick said: 'We're hoping so. 'We're hoping another night's rest and physio work overnight that he'll be back. It's just a build-up (of things). He's had quite a big workload in the last few weeks. It's just trying to monitor it.' Stokes underwent surgery on his left hamstring at the start of the year, but he has already bowled the most overs he ever has in a series, even if he leads the wicket-taking charts with 16 at 24.75. He has proved his all-round worth in Manchester by becoming the fourth Englishman – after Tony Greig, Ian Botham and Gus Atkinson – to record a century and five-for in the same match. Ashes 2005-winning captain Michael Vaughan said on the BBC's Test Match Special: 'Ben is a super-human at times. He was probably hoping that they would get the wickets and he wasn't going to be required. 'Maybe the medical staff just said 'Ben, have a day off'.' Chris Woakes dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan with successive deliveries in the first over but Gill survived the hat-trick ball and overcame being dropped on 46 by Liam Dawson to reach 78 not out. KL Rahul is unbeaten on 87 to give India hope of avoiding defeat and setting up a decider at the Kia Oval next week but Trescothick remains upbeat about England's chances, with or without Stokes. Trescothick added: 'We've got 10 other guys who are capable of doing special things also. 'It's never great when bowlers go down or you don't have someone available to do the work you need them to do, it's then just up to everybody else to pick up the pieces and do the extra work.'
