Five Dean Huijsen alternatives for Premier League teams
Real Madrid have won the race to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, securing the coveted centre-back ahead of Premier League clubs.
The Spanish side beat competition from the Premier League to land the 20-year-old, activating his £50m release clause. A number of England's elite were actively pursuing Huijsen, but will now look to alternatives in the market.
We've picked out five intriguing options who could be Dean Huijsen alternatives for Premier League teams.
RB Leipzig have endured a disappointing campaign to miss out on European football. That blow could lead to major sales with Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons expected to move on. Joining them could be Castello Lukeba, the latest sought-after centre-back to impress in Leipzig.
The 22-yer-old has all the attributes required of a modern centre-back. He's spent time in a back four and back three, with the latter role requiring him to cover large spaces behind an attacking wing-back.

— Football Transfers (@Transfersdotcom) May 11, 2025
Lukeba's athletic capabilities allow him to defend well in wide areas when required, while he's front-footed when there is an opportunity to counter-press or carry. In terms of numbers, he ranks in the top 2% of centre-backs in Europe's top leagues for attempted take-ons and successful take-ons per 90 minutes.
The Frenchman has a release clause of €90m, though Leipzig would entertain offers in the region of €70m (£58.8m).
Marc Guehi's reputation has been on the rise across the last 12 months. After injuries provided an unexpected key role for England last summer, he impressed as the Three Lions reached the final of Euro 2024.
This season, he's again proven dependable for Crystal Palace and captained the club to FA Cup success – the club's first-ever major trophy. Palace have turned down bids of around £70m from Newcastle and Tottenham in recent transfer windows, but could be forced to cash in this summer. Guehi has just 12 months to run on his deal at Selhurst Park.
🏴🏆 No Premier League centre-back has more sliding tackles (18), passes to the penalty area (40), or key passes (7) than Marc Guéhi this season

Still just 24, and with plenty of experience leading a Premier League side, Guehi could be a smart alternative to Huijsen as a left-sided centre-back.
Left-footed, comfortable on the ball, and with a attainable release clause, there's plenty of similarities between Huijsen and Piero Hincapie.
The latter has attracted admirers from across Europe after four solid seasons with Bayer Leverkusen. Hincapie was part of the Leverkusen side that won a German league and cup double without losing last season and has racked up 114 Bundesliga games and 44 international caps despite only turning 23 in January.
The Colombian centre-back has operated at full-back and on the left-hand side of a three-man central defence. His numbers, progressively, are particularly impressive. Hincapie ranks in the top 5% of centre-backs in Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries, crosses, and carries into the final third, and in the 93rd percentile for tackles won. His ability to stride forward has been a key part of Leverkusen's flexible system under Xabi Alonso.
A move has not been ruled out with a €60m release clause in his contract.
A Premier League proven option with plenty to like.
Murillo has been a monstrous presence in Nottingham Forest's unexpected European qualification, with the Brazilian a fantastic find. The 22-year-old had played just 13 league games for Corinthians when Forest made their move, a £12.6m deal that has paid dividends.

He was named the club's Player of the Season in 2023/24, before forming an excellent partnership with Nikola Milenkovic this time around. Murillo leads the Premier League for clearances (236) and successful take-on percentage (78.8%) and ranks second for blocks (67).
The broad-shouldered Brazilian combines strength and speed with raking long distribution and deceptively nimble footwork. Forest will want a huge offer for his services.
Goncalo Inacio has been regularly linked with England in recent transfer windows.
The Sporting centre-back has shone in back-to-back Primeira Liga triumphs for the Portuguese side and could move on in search of a new challenge.
Inacio ranks among the top 10 players in the Primeira Liga for progressive carrying distance (1st), passes into the final third (2nd), touches (4th), progressive passes (5th) and pass completion (10th). In addition, the 23-year-old's shown his goalscoring threat with six goals across all competitions.
Excellent on the ball, the measure of Inacio will come with a move to a top-five league and, perhaps, performances as part of a back four. Manchester United and former Sportin boss Ruben Amorim have been linked.

Ronaldo on his club future after Portugal win? 'Nothing will change'
It was a night of adulation and another trophy for Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portugal star shed tears after helping his team win the Nations League on Sunday. Ronaldo scored to help Portugal draw level with Spain 2-2 in the final, then watched as his teammates won the penalty shootout 5-3. "I have many titles with my clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal," Ronaldo said. "These are tears. It's mission accomplished and so much joy." The 40-year-old Ronaldo was the first to run out onto the field for the pre-game warmup, sparking a huge roar from the Portugal supporters, including many wearing jerseys emblazoned with his name. His appearance prompted many supporters to pull out their cell phones to record the superstar while they could still see him in action. Ronaldo conceded Saturday that he won't be able to play forever. That was three days after he helped Portugal to its first win over Germany for 25 years, scoring the winner for a 2-1 victory in the Nations League semifinals. On Sunday he was driving the team again, though it was initially a frustrating game as his chances were limited by Spain's hard-working defenders. Nuno Mendes fired Portugal level after Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring for Spain. Then Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead 2-1 at the break. But Ronaldo was in the right place at the right time to fire home the equalizer from Mendes' deflected cross in the 61st, setting off joyous scenes among his faithful fans. It was Ronaldo's 138th goal for Portugal. Nobody has ever scored more for their country. Ronaldo kept trying in what was his record-extending 221st appearance for the country, but eventually had to go off exhausted in the 88th to standing ovations from fans and a hug from coach Roberto Martínez. Ronaldo said he was carrying an injury into the game. "I had already felt it during the warmup, I had been feeling it for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it," Ronaldo said. "It's for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all." It also seems that Ronaldo is set to make his sixth World Cup appearance should Portugal qualify for next year's tournament, to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. "[This win over Spain] gives us confidence to go to the World Cup and see that it's possible to beat any team in the world." Ronaldo also seemingly answered whether will continue playing with Saudi club Al-Nassr. Earlier in June, he posted "this chapter is over" on social media after the club's last Saudi Pro League game of the by reporters on Sunday, he noted that "nothing will change" regarding his club situation and when asked if he would stay with Al-Nassr, he simply replied: "Yes." On Saturday he quelled rumors that he would play at the Club World Cup with a new team despite "quite a few" offers from participating clubs to play there. Whatever club Ronaldo plays for, he will keep striving for Portugal. "I have lived in many countries, I have played for many clubs, but when it's about Portugal, it is always a special feeling," he said. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester City: Transfers TLDR
Manchester City have signed Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth €37million (£31.2m/$42.3m). The 24-year-old Algeria international has signed a five-year contract. As part of this summer's transfer coverage on The Athletic, in addition to breaking news, tactical analysis and in-depth reads, our Transfers TLDR series (you can read them all here) will bring you a quick guide to each of the key deals. Born and raised in Paris, Ait-Nouri left the French capital to start his football education with Angers in the north-west of the country. He turned professional aged 16, making his senior debut six months later, and was still only 19 when he joined Wolves, initially on loan, in 2020. The move was made permanent a year later and in the past two seasons he became a fixture in Wolves' starting XI, excelling as an attacking force, mainly from left wing-back. Having represented France at youth levels, he switched international allegiance to Algeria, where his parents were born, and won his first cap in 2023. Steve Madeley Ait-Nouri loves to showcase his ability on the big stage, so City fans can look forward to an array and flicks and tricks to go with the Algerian's natural athleticism and ball-carrying ability. He is also adept at weighing in with goals and assists. But despite spending much of his career playing left-back or left wing-back, he remains raw defensively, so don't expect to see consistent excellence in that aspect of his game. Steve Madeley Left-back is an area City have struggled to strengthen across Pep Guardiola's nine-year reign. Looking at their current squad, Ait-Nouri should, in theory, be an undisputed starter from the off. He often played left wing-back for Wolves, with his ball-carrying standing out. Ait-Nouri combined that with a variety of chipped and grounded crosses and cutbacks to make seven assists last season in 37 Premier League appearances. He often operated high and wide in what was his final year at Molineux but is quite two-footed and capable of inverting into midfield, as he does below in December's match against Tottenham Hotspur, in which he got two of those assists. Defensively, Ait-Nouri is susceptible to lapses in concentration and occasionally slow to react to evolving moves. He has not played enough minutes as a specialist left-back for Wolves either. There will be some learning and unlearning required, but the 24-year-old is a necessary addition. Anantaajith Raghuraman Ait-Nouri had multiple niggles early in his time with Wolves, though none resulted in lengthy lay-offs. At Angers, his worst injury was a broken jaw which ruled him out from early January 2020 until the Ligue 1 season was halted in the March because of the pandemic, before it was later abandoned. He has had a relatively clean bill of health over the past two seasons, featuring in 70 of the 76 league games, with 66 starts. Anantaajith Raghuraman 'He's matured an awful lot,' Wolves' then head coach Gary O'Neil said last season in a news conference, having restored Ait-Nouri to the team following an exile under predecessor Julen Lopetegui. 'I didn't know him last year, but I'm led to believe he's made huge improvements in his maturity and his demeanour and how he is around the place and how he trains every day. It shows on the pitch, and he's been one of our best performers throughout the season.' Steve Madeley Ait-Nouri has joined City on a five-year deal, ending in June 2030. City have paid Wolves £31.2million for the Algeria international. Three weeks of the fee will be accounted for in City's 2024-25 financials, alongside Ait-Nouri's salary for the rest of this month. Wolves' annual accounting date was previously May 31 but has been shifted to June 30 this year, so they'll book all of their profit on the deal into an extended 13-month accounting period covering the 2024-25 season. Chris Weatherspoon Assuming agent fees of 10 per cent on the transfer, Ait-Nouri's signing will add £390,000 in amortisation costs to City's 2024-25 figures. Thereafter, to the end of the 2029-30 season, the fee spent here will be charged at a rate of £6.8m annually in City's books. Ait-Nouri's wages at his new club are unknown, but it goes without saying that the full cost of signing him will stretch well beyond the estimated £34.3m City are paying in transfer and agent fees. Advertisement Wolves signed Ait-Nouri in July 2021 from Angers, after he had spent much of the previous season on loan at Molineux. That deal set them back around £10m. Ait-Nouri signed a five-year contract back then which was never renewed or extended, leaving his book value now at an estimated £2.2m. As part of the deal with Angers, Wolves agreed a hefty 50 per cent sell-on clause in respect of any profit made if and when Ait-Nouri was eventually sold on. That would make a big dent in their profit on this deal, but there was a further proviso whereby Wolves could buy out that clause. The Athletic understands the cost of doing that to be around £8.5m ($11.5m at the current rate), which looks a no-brainer when set against the £10.5m Wolves would have to hand over as 50 per cent of their profit. Assuming they do buy it out, we estimate Wolves' accounting profit on selling Ait-Nouri, booked into their 2024-25 financials, will be £20.5m. Chris Weatherspoon

Manchester City confirm signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves
Manchester City have completed the signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Athletic reported on June 5 that the two sides had reached an agreement on a €40million (£33m) fee for the full-back. Ait-Nouri has signed a five year deal with City and will be available to feature at the Club World Cup. Advertisement 'I am incredibly happy and honoured to have joined Manchester City,' said the 24-year-old. 'City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to play for the club is a dream come true. 'I am also so excited about working with and learning from Pep and his coaching team and getting to train and play alongside such a world class group of players. Joining City is also a very proud moment for my family too.' Pep Guardiola played traditional centre-backs Josko Gvardiol and Manuel Akanji in the left-back position in recent seasons, as well as midfielder Nico O'Reilly. Algeria international Ait-Nouri made 167 appearances for Wolves in five years at Molineux. He initially joined on loan from French club Angers in 2020 and had the move made permanent the following year. Most often utilised as a left wing-back under head coach Vitor Pereira, Ait-Nouri made 41 appearances in all competitions for Wolves last season, recording five goals and seven assists. He completed 63 take-ons in the league, behind only Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace. Wolves are now without two of their standout performers from last season, after Manchester United confirmed the signing of forward Matheus Cunha. Guardiola's side have been drawn in Group G at the Club World Cup and will take on Wydad AC, Al Ain and Juventus. Analysis by Jordan Campbell The Algerian solves a problem issue for City at left-back, and is proven in the Premier League. The lack of an established player there has meant Josko Gvardiol has had to play the majority of his football there rather than at centre back, while Nico O'Reilly was converted from an attacking midfielder to offer an other option during the season. Ait-Nouri is very comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and his driving runs will provide City with a different profile of full-back than Guardiola has traditionally used. ()
