Nikola Topic talks Summer League playmaking skills: 'I'm just born with it'
Topic finished with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting, 10 assists and one rebound. He shot 1-of-1 from 3 and went 2-of-2 on free throws. He also had two steals.
The Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the Indiana Pacers in a 104-85 Summer League win. It was a blowout victory where everybody chipped in. It was another step in the right direction for Topic.
The deeper Topic plays in the Summer League, the more comfortable he's looked. This was the best he's looked as a playmaker. Some daring passes resulted in buckets for his teammates. He was also sharp in his textbook reads, as his teammates learned to get open from the outside to be fed the ball.
The 19-year-old needed some time to knock off any rustiness from a torn ACL. That was clear through his three Utah Summer League games. Now you're seeing what he looks like when he gains steam. The Thunder offense caught fire once he was in the driver's seat.
"I think just confidence-wise, I feel more confident. Going into a game, sleeping before a game," Topic said on his Summer League experience. "Just everything about that, I feel way more confident."
If you're the Thunder, you have to like what you've seen from Topic. He looks capable of running the second-unit offense when needed. He could bring an element as a creative and talented passer that the NBA champion lacked last season.
"I guess I'm just born with it," Topic said about his passing. "I learned a lot growing up. Played a lot against older players. Had my dad by my side and played against older playmakers having by my side to be my mentor. So I'd say all of that."

Mike Vrabel gives cryptic response on Stefon Diggs' absence in Patriots' preseason opener
New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs was with the team for Friday's preseason game against the Washington Commanders, but he remained on the sidelines in blue sweats and a T-shirt instead of his uniform. Diggs has been a full go at training camp, despite having torn his ACL during Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season. So, why was he not playing in the game? Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked that exact question during a Monday morning interview on WEEI's The Greg Hill Show. Specifically, he was asked if it was more of a precautionary move. But Vrabel didn't give anything away. 'Coach's decision,' he simply responded. It makes sense why the Patriots would want to err on the side of caution with Diggs, considering his previous injury. But, he was back on the field and was a full participant in Monday's practice before New England travels to Minnesota for its second preseason game against the Vikings. 49ers' receiving group takes another hit with Jordan Watkins' injury
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers banged-up receiving group sustained another loss with promising rookie Jordan Watkins sidelined for about a month with a high ankle sprain. Watkins had a 50-yard catch in his exhibition debut on Saturday night against Denver when he played 39 snaps in his first game action since being drafted in the fourth round in April. He didn't feel anything after the game but reported soreness in his ankle on Sunday when the injury was diagnosed. 'We weren't that worried about it until we got an MRI and it showed a high ankle,' coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. "So, who knows the date on those, but those usually take about a month to me.' Watkins had taken advantage of his chances in camp with starters Jauan Jennings (calf) and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) missing time with injuries. Aiyuk is rehabbing after tearing the ACL and MCL ligaments in his left knee last season. There is no definitive timeline for Aiyuk's return but Shanahan is hopeful to get him back in the middle of the season. Shanahan also said he hoped to get safety Malik Mustapha and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke back in the same time period as they are also recovering from ACL injuries. 'They're all different stages,' Shanahan said. "With where they're at, I always see them around Week 6, which means that could be Week 10, means it could be Week 5, but that's the area where I start thinking about it, which is a long way away. I know it's not Week 1 or anything like that, so it's something I'm not really thinking about too much.' Jennings has been out with a calf injury that sidelined him in the offseason and during training camp last summer. Jennings is also seeking a new contract but Shanahan said the absence is injury related. 'It is something that we don't think will be too serious, but it's bothering him now,' he said. "Depending on how much he misses, I mean, I always want guys out there. It helps him, it helps the team. But, Jauan was all right last year too missing some time.' The injuries and a potential suspension for Demarcus Robinson after he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge in early July leave the Niners with few healthy options at receiver outside of second-year player Ricky Pearsall. Shanahan said the team is always looking into potential additions but that for now the focus is on the players in camp. 'It's been an obvious situation to me for a while, so it's stuff we're working on," he said. 'It's stuff we're trying to really put pressure on these younger guys. That's why it was really unfortunate for Watkins to get that setback because we really believed he could have helped us early. But he needed to practice to be able to help us. So, it's a minor setback for him.' Cowing is expected back at practice on Tuesday. Roster moves The Niners signed DL Trevis Gipson and RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to one-year deals to get more healthy bodies in camp. Running back Ameer Abdullah was placed on injured reserve after injuring his ribs on Saturday night and No. 4 quarterback Tanner Mordecai was waived. ___

Jalen Williams visits China for Adidas event
It's August, which means the NBA has entered the driest part of its calendar for the next two months. Teams head to vacation with their offseason moves mostly finished. Most wait for training camp to prepare for the 2025-26 regular season. The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to enjoy their summer. They captured the NBA championship after a historic season this past June. When you bring home the Larry O'Brien trophy, you have the next few months to showboat the accomplishment as you wait to get your ring. One player who played an important role in the Thunder's championship run is Jalen Williams. The 24-year-old played through a torn wrist ligament that required pain-numbing shots before every playoff game. He scored 40 points in a decisive Game 5 win over the Indiana Pacers in the 2025 NBA Finals. Still sporting a wrist cast, Williams traveled across the globe. He landed in China for an Adidas event. Arriving at the airport, he was welcomed by a sea of fans who wanted to see the All-NBA player in person. He recorded a video of the crowd and posted it on his Instagram story. Adidas has a handful of players who travel to China in the offseason to represent their brand. Considering Williams' ascension into one of the league's best players, it shouldn't be surprising to see him assigned for the international visit. The NBA has had strong support in China over the years. As the Thunder have been a title contender for most of the last two decades and are fresh off a championship, their international support should be surprisingly large for a small-market franchise.
