'My wedding in Hawaii turned to chaos as panicked guests received tsunami alert'
Holidaymakers have been thrown into chaos after receiving tsunami warnings while holidaying to Hawaii, and one woman has shared how the alert threatened to ruin her wedding.
The alert - which has now been downgraded to a tsunami advisory - followed an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Russia in the early hours of this morning (July 30). Described by the BBC as "one of the strongest earthquakes in modern history", the earthquake caused damage to structures in the region, including a school, while the tremor's impact generated tsunami waves that experts initially warned could reach heights of up to 10ft in Hawaii.
Residents on the island, along with those on parts of mainland US' west coast and in Japan, are being urged to "take action now" and keep away from the ocean.
In the wake of the alert, normally bustling Hawaiian beaches were seen completely deserted while roads were gridlocked as people rushed to flee coastal regions of the island state. People holidaying have been left with no choice but to stay in their hotel rooms.
One woman on TikTok revealed her wedding in Waikiki had been plunged into chaos following the tsunami warning. "I should be at my celebration dinner, because I just got married today [...] but now we are in the hotel," the unnamed woman said.
"They told us to do a vertical evacuation, which means get up above the fourth floor. So we are on the 25th floor right now.
"Look at the traffic. You can't go anywhere right now if you want." She also said she spotted a " weird mist" on the other side of the island. "I am starting to panic a little bit," she said.
Another woman who traveled from New Zealand to Waikiki in Hawaii recently has been posting updates on social media. Katma was shopping with a friend when they received a notification on their phones alerting them to the developing situation.
Katma posted a TikTok clip, saying: "We just got this emergency alert and it says tsunami coming, and we're not even kidding, things are shaking."
She mentioned that they returned safely to their hotel, where she was staying on the 29th floor. "We are planning to stay here," she said.
"I think we'll be okay up here, but you just never know...quite scary."
The pair of friends heard warning sirens wailing across the area and spotted roads clogged with gridlocked traffic. The duo have since been waiting out the damage in their hotel room. At approximately 8pm local time in Hawaii, they observed "the wind definitely picking up."
"You just don't know what could happen," a worried Katma remarked. One hour later, she confirmed no waves had struck.
"It's literally like we're living in a movie," she continued. "I don't even know what's going on at this point, but we're still alive so that's good, isn't it?"
Hawaii governor Josh Green announced in a press conference that "so far we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is great relief to us". There have been no reports of injuries or power loss at this time.
Flights to Hawaii were briefly halted this morning, but Hawaiian Airlines have now resumed safe flying operations. Oprah Winfrey has generously opened up her private road in Maui, Hawaii, to aid those evacuating.
"As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened," a spokesperson informed CNN.
Evacuation shelters were established at schools and community centres across Honolulu by Hawaiian officials. However, Hawaii has since removed evacuation orders and people have since been able to return to their homes. The state's civil defence agency said in a X post after the tsunami alert for the state was lowered to an advisory.
"Use caution in returning and watch out for damage," it said, adding that beach parks will remain closed and The US National Weather Service warns to stay away from the coast.

'Spellbinding' village with 'haunted hotel' and witchcraft museum is 'beautiful'
The quaint village is steeped in history and regularly attracts visitors interested in the occult Cornwall is one of the United Kingdom's most breathtaking counties. It's also considered one of the most magical, steeped in legend. Perched on North Cornwall's clifftops, Tintagel Castle is one of the most popular attractions. It's rumoured to be the site where King Arthur was conceived, and visitors can explore Merlin's Cave on the beach below when the tide is out. St Nectan's Glen, a sacred valley with a 60-foot waterfall and stacked fairy stones, is another popular spot for those visiting Tintagel, and just ten minutes down the road, visitors will find a village that's "beautiful and magical." Boscastle, a small harbour village, is beloved for its stunning views, quaint shops, and mystical atmosphere. One visitor who documented her visit on TikTok as @thetaniachronicles described the "most bewitched" village as "England's equivalent of Salem." For over 50 years, Boscastle has been home to The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. The independent museum is home to "one of the world's largest and most spellbinding collections of folk magic artefacts," according to National Geographic, and on TripAdvisor, the museum has over 800 'excellent' reviews. One impressed visitor wrote: "Came here with friends, it had been on our list for ages and it didn't disappoint! After a hike along the coast from Tintagel, we reached the Boscastle harbour, which was in itself a spellbinding experience! The museum had thousands of artefacts, and we left feeling inspired and more knowledgeable than before! Will be back." Nearby, visitors will find The Wellington Hotel, one of the region's oldest coaching inns, and one of the most haunted - if rumours are to be believed. With over 500 'excellent' reviews on TripAdvisor, guests have praised the "best food and service" in the restaurant and the "cosy accommodation," and many said they loved hearing ghost stories. One reviewer wrote: "The hotel featured in the Most Haunted TV series although disappointingly we never saw any ghosts although several people including staff have and are happy to share their experiences if you want!" Another claimed: "Staff, hotel and food all excellent. Ghosts a bit scary tho. Kept up all night with various footsteps, noises, shadows and door rattles. Culminating in a rather nasty encounter later on. We nearly left at 4am but the excellent dinner the night before had wetted our appetite for breakfast." Along with gift shops, restaurants, and a National Trust cafe, there are several walking routes for those who enjoy coastal paths. Visit Cornwall says: "For fantastic coastal views take the left hand path alongside the harbour which leads to a slate platform where you can see the 'blowhole' an hour before or after low tide, shooting a horizontal waterspout halfway across the harbour entrance if the conditions are right. You can follow the coast path up to Willapark, where the National Coastwatch have a watch-house high on the headland. "The path on the other side of the harbour leads past the Witchcraft Museum out onto Penally Point, again this provides walkers with fantastic views but can be difficult underfoot in places." Alternatively, visitors can take in the views from Boscastle Harbour, which has over 300 'excellent' reviews on TripAdvisor. Someone praised: "Just breathtaking in the sheer rugged unspoilt natural beauty of the landscape here. We visited in April and thought the village was lovely and the coastline is really something. It's very atmospheric and as we walked back to the car we bought a steak and Stilton pasty from the little bakery. Simply delicious!" Another fan said: "A magical and mystical place," while someone echoed: "Beautiful and magical! I would highly recommend the walk to the harbour which is gorgeous. The views and the colour of the water is stunning." Boscastle is in Cornwall, England. The postcode for the visitor centre is PL35 0HD. The closest train station is Bodmin Parkway.

Woman says famous Scottish island 'isn't always like the videos you see online'
A woman who lives on one of Scotland's most visited islands and shares her everyday life online has opened up on how it may not match what many tourists imagine Scotland is renowned for its breathtaking terrain featuring peaks, such as the Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness. Countless visitors flock to the nation to experience its natural beauty and scenery, alongside attractions like historic castles. The country is equally celebrated for its cultural heritage, made up of its diverse selection of whisky, tartan kilts, bagpipes and the traditional delicacy haggis. Scotland is believed to provide a tranquil retreat from England's bustling cities, but one woman has revealed the stark truth about living on the nation's most sought-after island, the Isle of Skye. Stretching 50 miles in length, it's the biggest island in the Inner Hebrides, distinguished by its striking landscape and charming fishing communities. Niamh Mackinnon, 22-years-old, documents her island life through clips on TikTok and YouTube. In a recent TikTok upload, the Scottish local explained: "I live on the most popular island in Scotland and the reason we're so popular is because of specific landscapes, one of them being the Old Man of Storr, so I thought today I would show you what it's like at the height of summer because it might not be the picturesque, tranquil, peaceful dream that you are being sold online sometimes but we'll see, let's go." The Old Man of Storr is a soaring rocky formation on the Trotternish Ridge that is considered the most iconic hike on the Isle of Skye. Niamh prepared for her journey to the beloved landmark, bundling up in several clothing layers, waterproof trousers and hiking boots. As she arrived, Niamh was faced with rows of parked cars and dreary weather, prompting her to say: "I'm not trying to just complain in this vlog but the midges are so bad. I need to get a move on and look how busy it is." She embarked on the trek up the Old Man of Storr, but the conditions were far from ideal – grey skies, rain, fog, and a muddy path surrounded by grass. The young vlogger reflected on the changes over time: "I'm not even that old and there was a time when I was younger where you would come up here and know every single person that you passed. Tragic." Sitting amidst the bustle, Niamh shared her mixed feelings: "I'm just sitting here like looking at how busy it is and everything and I don't know, this is when I start to feel a bit like hypocritical or like bad about how much I post Skye online because it also makes me sad seeing this place so busy when I remember a time when it was so quiet and peaceful." She continued, grappling with her emotions: "And of course it's nice for other people in the world to get to experience this and it's on my doorstep so I don't wanna be greedy but yeah, it's a weird feeling to be honest." Although the Old Man of Storr was the focus of her video, the fog meant it was barely visible. Niamh concluded her video early, opting to head back down due to the wet conditions, crowds, and limited visibility of the Storr. She pointed out that this is "just the reality of Skye sometimes." Niamh's TikTok video has racked up an incredible 2.4 million views, alongside thousands of likes and comments. A shocked viewer asked: "This HEIGHT of summer???" Another user shared their experience: "I know this weird feeling. It's the same here in the Swiss alps. "As a kid you knew almost everyone you met on a hike. Now it's packed and most tourists don't even say hello." A third remarked: "A lot of places seem to struggle with excessive tourism having a negative impact. Hope that a happy balance can be found for the area you live in."

EasyJet traveller feels sick after spotting what couple are doing on budget flight
A 27-year-old woman travelling home from Tenerife got the shock of her life after watching a couple engaging in a disgusting and disturbing act onboard the budget airline A holidaymaker was left horrified after noticing what a couple were doing on a budget flight. Erin Butcher was flying home from a seven-day family holiday in Tenerife when she caught a man 'picking dirt from under his partner's toenails' during an easyJet flight Erin first noticed a woman's bare feet propped up on a tray table during the flight. The 27-year-old was then left feeling 'disgusted' when the man appeared to pick at her French pedicure toenails before 'flicking bits of dirt' around. She claims the couple did this for 20 minutes, while other passengers laughed nervously in confusion. The fashion merchandiser shared footage of the stomach-churning moment with the caption 'Nothing beats an easyJet flight. Hope no one ate off this tray table on the next flight'. The clip was uploaded on TikTok on July 31st and has since gone viral, racking up more than 336,200 views. Sickened, Erin says it was 'unhygienic' and made for a 'depressing' end to her holiday. Erin, from Southwark, South East London, said: "I felt so disgusted and I couldn't believe it. "The partner was sprawled across the seats with her feet on the tray table, which was shocking enough. "Her partner then started picking at her toenails and flicking little bits [of dirt] everywhere. It was disgusting." She added: "I was absolutely horrified. I was with my family and none of us could actually believe what was happening. "Even to do that in the privacy of your own home is questionable but to put them on a tray table where people are eating off all day. "I was relieved I wasn't sitting next to them. I had the perfect view from my aisle seat which is horrifying. I couldn't really take my eyes off even though I wanted to. "Her feet were on that table the majority of the four-and-a-half-hour flight. She was really making herself at home. It's so unhygienic. "Other passengers around us had noticed as well. Everyone was laughing and it was quite unbelievable. "As if things aren't depressing enough when your week in the sun has just ended and you're faced with toe picking the whole way home." Many users took to the comments to express their disgust. One user wrote: "Totally gross." While someone else commented: "That's disgusting anywhere." EasyJet has been approached for a comment. It comes after another plane passenger recently blasted a mum for changing her baby's dirty nappy on a tray table rather than taking the infant to the bathroom. She said on Reddit: "I'm a really nauseous flyer, so I took a Dramamine ahead of time and did my best to get some sleep during the flight. "This didn't happen because of the baby's crying, but oh well, I know flights are scary and stressful for infants and there was nothing anyone could do about that. "What got to me was the couple changing their baby's extremely stinky number two diaper right in the middle of their seats, using the mum's food tray as a changing table. "We were at the back of the plane right by the bathrooms, which I confirmed had baby changing tables when I had to go back there to throw up after the smell hit me." Much to her delight, the pilot ended up speaking out against this behaviour - but sadly it was too late to stop the smell from making its way around the cabin.
