The Jana Sangh face, who stood between JP and police
Narayan, popularly known as JP, would have been injured, but for the intervention of a senior leader of the Jana Sangh (the precursor to the BJP) and ex-RSS functionary, Nanaji Deshmukh, who came in between to take the blows on himself. In the process, Nanaji ended up fracturing his hand.
He would go on to distinguish himself as one of the most intrepid faces of the JP Movement, against 'corruption and misrule' of the Indira Gandhi government. On June 22, 1975, just three days before the Emergency was imposed, Nanaji drew up an action plan for an all-India Janata Front to press for the resignation of Mrs Gandhi, given that her election to the Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli had been set aside by the Allahabad High Court.
'He (Nanaji) also whittled down JP's aversion to politics, convincing him that political power also has importance,' says former BJP general secretary K N Govindacharya.
On June 25, 1975, the leaders of the newly-formed Janata Front met at JP's residence in Delhi to form a coordination body, with Nanaji named general secretary. The same evening, they held a rally at Ramlila Maidan, where JP called Indira's prime ministership unlawful, and asked the police and Army to disobey 'illegal' orders issued by her, Vinay Sitapati writes in his book Jugalbandi – The BJP Before Modi.
That night, PM Indira clamped the Emergency, suspending key fundamental rights and ordering arrests of Opposition leaders and dissenters across the country. The Cabinet was informed only the next morning at 6.
Nanaji, however, managed to evade arrest. 'Nanaji Deshmukh had escaped after receiving a call… A female voice had told him that he had an hour to get away: 'The police will surround your place around 1 o' clock'… Nanaji made calls to warn others while his assistant packed a couple of shirts and dhotis into a briefcase. While the rest of Delhi slept, he fled to a secret location. He would soon find himself in south Bombay, squirreled away in the home of (industrialist) Nusli Wadia,' writes Sitapati.
Close to Nanaji, Nusli and his wife Maureen protected him. Nusli even helped Opposition leaders with funds to survive the Emergency. Nanaji was finally arrested in August 1975, and sent to jail.
Once Mrs Gandhi declared elections in early 1977, Nanaji was fielded as the Janata Party candidate from UP's Balrampur Lok Sabha seat. He won, with the Janata Party sweeping the polls.
As Morarji Desai became PM, Nanaji was offered the post of Industries Minister in the Janata Party government, but the RSS advised him to keep out, apprehensive that controversies would be stoked about the ties he had developed with industrialists such as Wadia, Mafatlal and Tatas while serving as the Jana Sangh treasurer in the early 1970s. The Sangh trusted him implicitly, which is why he was sent on his own to collect donations.
'His legend was built on relentless pursuit of lucre for the party, including running on foot after a horse-riding prince to entice him to give money,' Sitapati writes.
Incidentally, born in Maharashtra in a poor family, Nanaji or 'Chandikadas Amritrao Deshmukh' as he was formally named, once sold vegetables to pay his tuition fees to study.
His rise in the RSS was quick. As in-charge of Sangh affairs in UP, he established the first Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Gorakhpur in 1950. He later joined the Jana Sangh, rising to become one of its most prominent leaders.
After the Janata Party government formation, Nanaji faded away from politics, and after he turned 60, decided to retire from public life. He first settled in Gonda and then shifted to Chitrakoot, where he founded Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, 'India's first rural university'.
He passed away in Chitrakoot in 2010 at the age of 93. In 2019, Nanaji was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Narendra Modi government.

Thackeray cousins' first political alliance comes a cropper
MUMBAI: Uddhav and Raj Thackeray received a jolt on Wednesday when their first alliance in a poll—the BEST employees' credit society election—came a cropper, not just causing the Shiv Sena (UBT) to lose power in the credit cooperative society but failing to win it even a single seat. The election to the 21 seats of the society was held on August 18. Members of BEST Workers Union celebrated with union leader Shashank Rao outside the counting centre at 4am on Wednesday. The panel floated by trade union leader Shashank Rao's BEST Workers Union won 14 seats, the BJP-sponsored Sahakar panel won six while the SC/ST Employees Union won one seat. Rao, who joined the BJP in 2024, gave the credit for his panel's victory to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Mumbai guardian minister Ashish Shelar. The Sena (UBT) and MNS had jointly fielded a panel as the BEST Kamgar Sena attempted to retain control of the society that it had won in the past two elections. Accusations of foul play flew thick and fast from the losing alliance regarding the BJP's use of money and political power. Just days before the election, the Mahayuti government's cooperation department and Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had served notices on office-bearers of the credit society over alleged irregularities. On the day of voting, a verbal war broke out between Sena (UBT) leader Suhas Samant, who was leading the panel, and BJP MLC Prasad Lad who fielded the BJP's Sahakar panel. Samant and MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande accused the BJP-led panel of distributing money to voters. Rao gave the credit for his panel's victory to Fadnavis and Shelar. 'Issues such as the payment of Covid allowance to BEST employees and the salary of contract employees had been hanging fire for long,' he said. 'When we reached out to Shelar and Fadnavis, they took a quick decision to help BEST employees. This society was under our union from 2006 to 2016 and now BEST employees have again shown faith in us.' The defeat came as an embarrassment for the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, as it was seen as the first test of the alliance between the Thackeray cousins. Mahayuti leaders took several digs at the Thackeray cousins. The BJP's Prasad Lad said that the BEST credit society elections had shown that the so-called Thackeray brand was nothing but a big zero. 'The sum total of two zeros is also zero,' taunted BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhye. Samant alleged that the Sena (UBT) lost the election due to the massive use of money power by a BJP-led panel and the misuse of political power by sending notices to the society from the cooperation department and EOW. 'Of the 15,000 voters, we have around 12,000 employees in our union,' he said. 'But the BJP-led panel used money power to lure them. We thought people would not vote for them despite the distribution of money, but money power turned more powerful and we lost. The notice by government agencies also created confusion in the minds of voters.' MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande said that the results ought not to be seen as a test for the BMC elections, as the two were different. 'I congratulate Shashank Rao and all the candidates who won,' he said. 'But no one should connect these results with the BMC elections, as the two elections have different scales and Marathi people will vote in different ways.' CM Devendra Fadnavis said that the BJP had not politicised the election as it was just an employees' cooperative society poll. 'Both Shashank Rao and Prasad Lad are from our party, but we kept politics away from these elections,' he said. 'However, the Sena (UBT) and MNS didn't, publicising them as the elections of Brand Thackeray and the reunion of the Thackeray cousins. The results show that people did not like it, and they were thus rejected.'

"Draconian Act": Congress Slams Centre Over Constitution Amendment Bill
New Delhi: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday criticised the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill that sought to allow the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they were held on serious criminal charges. The Congress leader accused the ruling BJP of using its majority in Parliament to push through the bill with the intention of targeting the opposition. He called the move "draconian" and politically motivated. The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader called the bill a political weapon and said, "The intention of the ruling side to pass this bill using its majority is not right. This will be used as a tool to target the opposition. This is a draconian act." He further questioned the timing of the bill, linking it to ongoing debates over the allegation on the Election Commission of 'vote theft'. "At a time when questions are rising against the Election Commission, there is panic in the ruling party, and this issue has now been raised to divert attention from it?" Adhir Ranjan told ANI. Earlier in the day, slamming the BJP government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that legislation, if passed, will allow the ruling party at the Centre to register false cases against Chief Ministers of the opposition parties and it will shake the democratic foundations of the country. In a post on X, Mr Stalin said that the BJP Government has decided to "defile" the Constitution."The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform -- this is a Black Day and this is a Black Bill. 30-day arrest = Removal of an elected CM. No trial, no conviction -- just BJP's DIKTAT. This is how DICTATORSHIPS begin: Steal votes, Silence rivals and Crush States," wrote Mr Stalin while condemning the bill. The Tamil Nadu CM pointed out that the introduction of the said bill is the BJP's government diversion tactic to bring the bill at a time when it is facing allegations over "vote theft". "After the expose of #VoteTheft, the very mandate on which the Union BJP Government was formed is in serious question. Its legitimacy is doubtful. Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this expose. To do that, they have brought in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill," he said. Expressing faith in the judiciary, CM Stalin said that the Constitution Amendment bill will be struck down by the courts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bllls to a joint committee of Parliament.

Amendment new strategy by neo fascist politics: CM
T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Sangh Parivar was employing a new strategy to target non-BJP state govts and the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025– introduced in Lok Sabha on Wednesday – can only be seen as part of the central govt's political decision. "This is a continuation of the vendetta politics using central investigative agencies. There was a longstanding attempt to destabilize state govts by weaponizing central agencies. As part of that, chief ministers and ministers who hold constitutional responsibilities in the country were imprisoned for extended periods. The frustration over their refusal to resign is what prompted the hasty introduction of this amendment," he said. The attempt is to trap individuals in fake cases, imprison them and disqualify them—this is the new experiment of neo-fascist politics, said Vijayan. "BJP members must explain under what constitutional morality those arrested in corruption cases become sanctified upon joining their party. The move to destabilize state govts is a continuation of efforts to undermine the constitutional rights of states and establish that governors have veto power over legislatures," he said. Vijayan said strong protest should arise from all democratic believers against the anti-democratic moves of Sangh Parivar targeting political opponents. There must be a united move against this amendment, which paves the way for political misuse, he added. Meanwhile, opposition leader VD Satheesan said the proposed amendment in the Constitution Bill, goes against the basic principles of Indian laws and the opposition will strongly protest against this move. Under existing laws, a person is guilty of an offence only when a court of law convicts him or her. "Piloting this bill itself is against natural justice. It is against the principles of law, basic principles of law, because when a person is convicted by a court after a long procedure of trial, then only he/she will be a convicted person; till then, there is a feeling that he/she is an innocent person," said Satheesan. The opposition leader said with this, any central govt can use central agencies to register cases against any ministers of the state govts that are ruled by opposition parties. This can be misused for political gains. This is against the basic principles of law and against natural justice, he said.
