Four Florida baseball players invited to 2025 MLB draft combine
Florida right-handed pitcher Jake Clemente, left-handed pitcher Pierce Coppola, catcher Brody Donay and shortstop Colby Shelton accepted invites to the 2025 MLB draft combine this week.
The fifth annual combine "will take place from June 17-21 at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, for a third consecutive year," according to MLB. "The Combine will feature 322 Draft prospects, including 180 collegiate players and 142 high school athletes, as well as a decorated group of former Major League players and coaches, members of Club baseball operations departments, scouting directors and other Club personnel."
Shelton is the scout's favorite of the group. The junior shortstop improved his decision-making at the plate a ton this year, albeit at the expense of his power stroke. Still, scouts are going to be high on him if he flashes the kind of exit velocities they want to see.
Donay has the kind of raw power that warrants a closer look, and Coppola has always had the stuff and projectable frame to turn heads. The former has consistency questions after struggling against higher-level arms, and the latter has been injured more than he's been healthy while at Florida.
Clemente is perhaps the most interesting prospect of the four. He made a name for himself on the Cape last summer, but the numbers didn't translate as Florida's third starter. A move to the bullpen suited Clemente perfectly, and he became a three-inning guy to close out big games.
What makes Clemente so interesting isn't the mid-to-high 90s fastball or wipeout slider; it is the fact that he is a redshirt sophomore and has two years of eligibility left. With plenty of leverage in negotiations, Clemente can find out where teams value him and how to move up if it's not where he wants it. It's the same thing Shelton did last year, and it gives the player a direct line to MLB scouts and front offices.
Shelton attended the combine a year ago as a draft-eligible sophomore, alongside right-hander Brandon Neely, who went in the third round. In 2023, the eventual fourth overall pick, outfielder Wyatt Langford, shortstop Josh Rivera and right-hander Brandon Sproat attended. Both Rivera and Sproat heard their names called in the third round. First-rounder Sterlin Thompson was the only Gator at the 2022 event.
MLB Draft Combine Schedule
The 2025 MLB draft presented by Nike is planned for July 13-14 during All-Star Week in Atlanta. The draft will feature 20 rounds across the two days. The opening night of the draft, which will feature 105 picks in total, will include the first three rounds, compensatory rounds, competitive balance rounds and prospect promotion incentive rounds at the Coca-Cola Roxy in The Battery Atlanta.
Players will do on-field workouts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET on the first day. Some of that action will air on the MLB Network, and the high schoolers will play a non-televised game in the evening. Workouts are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET on Day 2, and the final day of the combine is strength and conditioning from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

Caitlin Clark Facing Major Threat to Her Place in WNBA History

Caitlin Clark Facing Major Threat to Her Place in WNBA History originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark was incredible in her first game back for the Indiana Fever following a five-game injury spell. On Saturday, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year returned to action and went off for a season-high 32 points to lead the Fever to an upset win over the defending champions, the New York Liberty, 102-88. Advertisement The WNBA had another busy night on Sunday following Saturday's set of games. The Las Vegas Aces' struggles continued as they suffered a 76-70 loss against the Phoenix Mercury. This was the Aces' third loss in four games. A'ja Wilson was still sidelined for this one as the three-time WNBA MVP missed her second consecutive game due to a concussion suffered during the Aces' 97-89 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday. It was Chelsea Gray who carried most of the load for the Aces, with the six-time All-Star registering a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double with four assists, a steal, a block and one triple in 38 minutes of action. It still wasn't enough for Las Vegas, though, as it fell to 5-5 on the season. Gray, however, made history with her performance against the Mercury. The three-time WNBA champion climbed to the No. 8 spot for the most career double-doubles by a guard. According to Polymarket Hoops on X, Gray has now tied Caitlin Clark for that record. Chelsea Gray of the Las Vegas Aces exults during a game against the Seattle Becker/NBAE via Getty Images Considering how Clark and Gray are two of the top guards in the WNBA today, this double-double record will likely be a back-and-forth battle between these two stars. Advertisement Gray, though, is already in her 11th year in the WNBA, which means that Clark, a sophomore, will very likely play on much longer after Gray, 32, decides to hang up the boots. Until that time comes, however, Clark can consider Gray to be a major threat to her place in the WNBA history books--at least in terms of this particular double-double record. The Fever and the Aces face off on the court on June 22. Ex-Red Sox star calls team's Rafael Devers trade 'crazy'

A quick glance at the Boston Red Sox's roster from their 2018 World Series-winning team may make the average baseball fan quizzical when compared to the 2025 squad. Rafael Devers was their third baseman, Mookie Betts played right field and Xander Bogaerts was the shortstop, not to mention players like Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr. and J.D. Martinez also bolstered the lineup as the team defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. On Sunday, one of the last core pieces of the lineup was dealt. The Red Sox traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants for Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello, James Tibbs III and Kyle Harrison – a deal that stunned the baseball world. Despite his philosophical differences with the Red Sox, Devers was hitting .272 with a .905 OPS and 15 home runs. He was leading the American League in walks with 56 and had played the most games in the majors (73). Betts, who the Red Sox traded to the Dodgers, offered his thoughts following the team's win over the Giants on Sunday. "I just thought it was crazy," he told The Athletic. "Nothing really to say, it's just crazy." Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw also reacted to the trade as he was told during an ESPN segment about the wild move. "How about that trade? That's wild," he said. "Buster's really doing it! Not Olney; Buster Posey's really doing it over there. Good for Buster, man. He's going for it. I'd consider (Devers) one of probably the top 10 hitters in the game at worst. He's definitely a game-changer." Nearly seven years later, the Red Sox are operating with a completely different roster than the one they had when they lifted the Commissioner's Trophy. Boston will enter the week fresh off of a sweep of the New York Yankees and only 6.5 games behind them for first place in the AL East. Trey Hendrickson, Bengals resume contract talks, per report

Trey Hendrickson, Bengals resume contract talks, per report Show Caption Hide Caption NFL players can now partake in Olympic flag football Olympic flag football, which will make it's debut at the 2028 summer games, just got bumped up a level after the NFL agreed to let its players partake. Sports Pulse Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals haven't been on speaking terms for most of the offseason. Now, for the first time in a long time, that ice is beginning to thaw. Hendrickson and the Bengals have resumed contract talks, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The two sides appeared to be headed for a split for most of the offseason, especially as both parties turned up the heat on contract talks. Now there is a glimmer of hope for Hendrickson's chances of remaining in the jungle after the Bengals' star told ESPN in May there was no communication from the team after the 2025 NFL Draft. Cincinnati drafted Texas A&M edge rusher Shemar Stewart with the 17th overall pick but hasn't been able to sign the rookie to his contract yet either. As far as contract disputes go, Hendrickson's has been one of the uglier ones in recent memory. The All-Pro has been in search of a new contract for the past few seasons but has yet to receive one. That led to the Bengals granting Hendrickson the ability to seek a trade earlier this offseason, which also hasn't come to fruition. The parties eventually took their fight to the media – turning the situation into a public dispute. The NFL's sack leader with 17.5 in 2024, Hendrickson has said he won't play this season without a new deal. In May, the pass-rusher shared his side of the story with the media, including whether he wanted to remain with the Bengals. "That's a tough question too," Hendrickson said via WPCO 9's Marshall Kramsky. "You try to not let the business become personal, I think over the last week or so it's become personal unfortunately. When there's a lack of communication in any relationship, if it's business or personal relationship, lack of communication leads to animosity. That leaves my narrative only to me with no clear direction." At the time, Hendrickson said the situation became personal. That came on the heels of an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" in April, following some explosive comments from Bengals Vice President Katie Blackburn. "I think he should be happy at certain rates that maybe he doesn't think he'd be happy at," Blackburn said via Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I think some of it is on him to be happy at some point, and if he's not, you know, that's what holds it up sometimes. So, you know, it takes him to say yes to something, and also, we have all the respect in the world for him. He's been a great player. We're happy to have him. And so maybe we'll find a way to get something to work. We're just gonna see where it goes." Hendrickson skipped mandatory minicamp last week, resulting in fines totaling $104,768. The Bengals have dished out some big contracts this offseason, awarding Ja'Marr Chase with a four-year, $161 million extension that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Tee Higgins was also given an extension, ensuring the offense would remain intact. With training camp fast approaching, time is running out for Cincinnati to avoid further fracturing their relationship with Hendrickson. Time may heal all wounds, but a new contract probably wouldn't hurt either. Luckily for both sides, those discussions could result in both. All the NFL news on and off the field.
