Ryanair's April-June net profit doubles, summer bookings 'robust'

Reuters21-07-2025
DUBLIN, July 21 (Reuters) - Ryanair's (RYA.I), opens new tab net profit more than doubled in its April-June quarter, thanks in part to the timing of Easter holidays, and bookings for the rest of the summer are robust, Europe's largest low-cost carrier said on Monday.
The Irish airline, Europe's largest by passenger numbers, said it was not seeing a trend of later-than-normal bookings reported by some rivals.
"Across the piece, bookings are good," Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan said, adding that consumer confidence was very strong.
The airline reported a net profit of 820 million euros ($953 million) for its first quarter, which ended on June 30, up from 360 million euros in the same period last year when Easter was in March. A Ryanair poll of analysts had expected 716 million euros.
Average fares rose 21% from the same quarter last year, thanks to the timing of Easter and marginally stronger than expected close-in pricing, CEO Michael O'Leary said in a statement.
In the July-September quarter, when European airlines make most of their profit, Ryanair expects to recover almost all of the 7% fare decline seen last year, when it was hit by weak consumer sentiment and a dispute with some online travel agents.
Asked about recent commentary from British low-cost rivals EasyJet (EZJ.L), opens new tab and Jet2 (JET2.L), opens new tab that customers were booking later, Sorahan said: "We're not seeing those kind of trends at all."
Rivals are likely seeing a negative impact from the resolution of Ryanair's dispute with online travel agents, he said.
Ryanair's profit for the year depends heavily on the strength of close-in bookings in August and September, but O'Leary said the rebound in fares should lead to "reasonable net profit growth" for the year to March 31.
As Boeing's (BA.N), opens new tab largest customer in Europe, Ryanair is particularly exposed to the possible imposition of tariffs on commercial aircraft, but said it was hopeful that an exemption for commercial aircraft could be agreed by the United States and European Union.
"We're all hopeful and maybe a little confident that something might get done," CFO Sorahan said.

Man United hire F1 guru who has never worked in football to lead data department

Manchester United have appointed a serial winner from Formula One as their new data guru in a bid to use AI to transform their fortunes. Mike Sansoni, who contributed to eight world championship-winning seasons in an 11-year spell at the Mercedes F1 team, has joined United as director of data. Sansoni, who has never worked in football before and was Mercedes' senior performance engineer, replaces Dominic Jordan, who left United last year. But Sansoni, who will report to chief executive Omar Berrada at Old Trafford, is known to United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe as Ineos have a minority stake in Mercedes. United want Sansoni to use his knowledge of data and artificial intelligence to make a huge difference and, after making 450 people redundant, will appoint further people to his team. They said: 'He has been tasked with establishing Manchester United as a data-led organisation, embedding predictive and AI-driven decision-making across football and the wider club.' United have also appointed former Channel 4 director Kirstin Furber as their new people director. Furber, who has also worked for other broadcasters in BBC Worldwide and 20th Century Fox, has been on the board at British Wheelchair Basketball and the London Football Association.

UBS profit beats expectations as CEO Ermotti holds stance on capital

ZURICH, July 30 (Reuters) - UBS's (UBSG.S), opens new tab second-quarter profit more than doubled from a year earlier, beating expectations on a surge in trading activity even as regulatory uncertainty continued to preoccupy the bank. Net profit came in at $2.4 billion, beating a company-provided estimate of $2.045 billion as the bank joined rivals in benefiting from higher trading amid market turmoil. Switzerland's largest bank remains committed to remunerating its shareholders, CEO Sergio Ermotti said, renewing his criticism of Swiss government proposals to increase the amount of capital it would have to hold by $24 billion, which analysts have said could hamper its ability to reward investors. Reuters reported on Tuesday that UBS had stepped up contingency planning, including considering moving its headquarters. Ermotti said however the bank was focused on staying in Switzerland. At the same time, "shrinking is not an option", he told reporters, adding that UBS retained its global ambitions, including in the U.S. "We are not going to front-run any new capital regime, that's clear," he added. Theories that UBS could easily absorb or mitigate proposed capital increases did not reflect reality, he said on an analysts' call, with any mitigation strategies coming "at a significant cost". Deliberations in the Swiss parliament over capital requirements could take years. The government is concerned about the potential for crises, given that UBS is the country's sole global bank, with a balance sheet about double the size of the economy. For Deutsche Bank analysts, "while Swiss regulation remains a known headwind by now", the results were a "good reminder of the strength of the business model and the fast and relatively smooth integration of Credit Suisse". Shares in UBS trimmed early gains to trade 0.8% higher. UBS was upbeat about its outlook, saying it saw a high level of readiness among investors and companies to deploy capital as "conviction" around the global economy strengthens. Revenues for global markets surged 25%, beating analysts' expectations, during a quarter when trading cues were focused on U.S. tariff policies. Transaction-based income for its global wealth management division rose 12%, slightly below forecasts. UBS expects trading and transactional activity to normalise in the quarter ahead, but said it was too early to say when deals in the pipeline would be executed. Other major banks such as Bank of America (BAC.N), opens new tab, JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), opens new tab, Citigroup (C.N), opens new tab and Morgan Stanley (MS.N), opens new tab also beat estimates in the second quarter as traders cashed in on volatile markets. Some of the earnings beat can be attributed to a $427 million release of provisions related to the resolution of a Credit Suisse litigation issue, as well as a net income tax benefit of $209 million. Integration of Credit Suisse remained on track, UBS said, with one-third of client accounts booked in Switzerland migrated. Market volatility in spring also meant some UBS clients booked losses after they were sold complex foreign-exchange derivatives that wiped out much of their investments. The bank has been in talks to compensate clients, Reuters reported in May. Ermotti said on Wednesday that fewer than 200 clients were affected and that some UBS advisors "did not adhere to the rules that we have in place", without elaborating. He declined to disclose the amount the bank has set aside for compensation, but said the cost for UBS was "not material".

Novo Nordisk slides further on US competition, new CEO concerns

COPENHAGEN, July 30 (Reuters) - Shares in Wegovy maker Novo Nordisk fell further on Wednesday as analysts warned of persistent competition from copycat drugs in the United States, a day after a profit warning and the naming of a new CEO prompted investors to wipe $70 billion off the drugmaker's value. Novo Nordisk slashed its outlook for 2025 sales growth on Tuesday and said it had appointed veteran insider Maziar Mike Doustdar as its new CEO, tasked with reviving its performance in the United States, the largest market for weight-loss drugs. Novo said the lower sales outlook reflected competition from "compounded" copycats to Wegovy, custom-made medicines that are based on the same ingredients as branded drugs, which took investors by surprise. While Novo said it was intensifying its efforts to regain patients taking copycat drugs and limit unlawful compounding, analysts at Guggenheim said Novo's new 2025 guidance did not assume compounding volumes coming down. Its shares closed down 23% on Tuesday after tumbling as much as 30%. On Wednesday, they had fallen a further 4.1% by 1257 GMT. Novo became Europe's most valuable listed company following the launch of Wegovy in 2021 but its shares have fallen by two-thirds since peaking in June last year on concerns the drugmaker is losing ground in the obesity drug race. Despite the problems, incoming CEO Doustdar said on an investor call on Tuesday that "we are having a fantastic growth right now with Wegovy". "This has really become a severe credibility issue," said Barclays analyst Emily Field. "They don't view the issues that they have as severely as the market does, and that's creating a big problem." Doustdar told investors a priority will be to move faster and improve "commercial execution" but did not reveal any new strategic direction. He currently heads all commercial units globally, minus the United States, which according to analysts at TD Cowen had been "a brighter spot in Novo's commercial efforts, which could help to buoy the current platform as the pipeline advances". Barclays downgraded the stock to "equal-weight" from "overweight". Bank of America also downgraded the stock to "neutral" from "buy".
