Malaysia to complete at largest rocket engineering finals in the US from June 9–14

JOHOR BARU, June 1 — A multinational team from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has qualified for the finals of the prestigious International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) 2025 in Midland, Texas, the United States.
Known as the UTM Rocketry Team, its members consist of third- and fourth-year undergraduates from the university's mechanical and electrical engineering faculties.
The team is led by Arykummara Thava Kumar, who said the initiative began in June last year.
He said in the early stages, the team was highly motivated and inspired to do something different.
'After several discussions, we settled on the rocket project that used propulsion technology.
'For us, the Rimau-1 rocket project was the perfect opportunity to show our skills in structural composites, rocket propulsion, electronics and also a combination of aerodynamics.
'Basically it's a combination of what we have learnt and also our own initiative,' he told Malay Mail when met at the UTM main campus in Skudai recently.

Arykummara said the UTM Rocketry Team comprises 40 undergraduates who have all contributed to the success of the Rimau-1 rocket project.
He said the team will campaign Rimau-1 against other universities from around the world during IREC 2025, which takes place from June 9 to 14 in Midland, Texas.
This June, more than 2,000 students, faculty members and mentors will gather for the 18th annual IREC.
IREC is one of the world's largest intercollegiate rocket engineering competitions, testing students in aerospace design, propulsion systems and flight dynamics.
It features more than 150 colleges and universities from across the globe competing in various rocket categories.
How Rimau-1 came about
The 2.5-metre Rimau-1 rocket is rated as a jet propulsion rocket capable of reaching an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,048 metres).
Since its inception, the team has spent about RM30,000 to construct Rimau-1.
Arykummara said the idea to name their rocket Rimau-1 came from the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) football club, which features a tiger as its emblem.
He said JDT, also known as the Southern Tigers, has been the pride of Johoreans due to its strong achievements in football.
'Since the UTM campus is also located in Skudai, Johor, our Rimau-1 rocket identifies with the state and its football team,' said the final-year engineering student chosen as the project director.

Road to IREC 2025
Team member Izzat Idlan said he was proud that the Rimau-1 project had potential despite the team's limited funding in the early stages.
The 24-year-old, who is in charge of sponsorship, said this was the first time a UTM team would participate in an international rocket championship.
'This shows that Malaysians are capable and we can aim beyond textbooks and theories.
'At the same time, we were also inspired by Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) rocket team as they were the first to have participated in the previous IREC,' Izzat said.
Another team member, Youssef Shahin, said the achievement was commendable as the team had managed to qualify for the finals.
The 21-year-old Egyptian student said he was proud of how far the team had come.
'Despite the many hiccups we endured, we finally made it to the tail-end of the project.'
'All our hard work paid off and we made it for the finals in the United States,' he said, adding that it was another uphill task as they will compete with 160 teams in the final round of the competition.

Raising the standard
Izzat said the team hopes that their achievement will raise the profile of Malaysian engineering talent internationally and motivate more students to realise their potential.
'As a team, we hope that our success will have an impact so that others can see that Malaysian students are also capable of competing on the global stage.'
'Such impact can also inspire the next generation of UTM students,' he said.
In 2022, USM's WAU Rocketry Team made headlines as the first-ever Malaysian team to participate in an international rocket competition during that year's Spaceport America Cup.
The team made Malaysia proud after finishing in 11th place that year.
However, USM is not participating in this year's IREC.

Former biologist John Chan says humans can learn to live peacefully with bees. (Dinesh Kumar Maganathan @ FMT Lifestyle) PETALING JAYA : It was supposed to be a standard relocation. But as John Chan rose skyward in a cramped skylift box, face-to-face with a massive 2m-wide honeycomb hanging high above an international school in Bandar Baru Bangi, he knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary rescue. The air was already thick with warning. 'We lit the smoke – we always do that first,' he said, referring to the makeshift burner made from cardboard egg cartons. 'But even that didn't calm them. The bees attacked immediately.' The hive belonged to the 'lebah tualang', or giant honeybee – Malaysia's largest and most aggressive species. 'Their sting is the most painful. I wear at least three layers, but if they really want to get through, they can.' That day, they did. Chan, a volunteer at My Bee Savior (MBS), was stung four or five times through his protective suit. One of his fellow volunteers, stationed safely on the ground below, had it worse – he bolted over 100m to the school's main gate, only to discover 30 stings across his back. Surprisingly, the giant honeybees are Chan's favourite: 'They are beautiful creatures; unlike other bee species here, they form a congregation of 30 to 40 hives on a single tree. (My Bee Savior pic) Still, this particular case was one of the rare ones during which Chan and his team had to retreat. At 43, the former biologist dedicates his life to protecting both people and bees. As part of MBS, which relocates beehives free of charge, Chan deals with some of nature's most misunderstood – and sometimes most dangerous – creatures. Originally a government initiative under the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, MBS re-emerged in 2019 as a volunteer-led organisation with one mission: to offer humane, non-lethal solutions to Malaysia's rising cases of urban beehives. For Chan, this mission often requires nerves of steel, a beekeeper's precision, and the level-headedness to walk away when nature refuses to yield. 'Sometimes we have to abandon a case – it's too dangerous. But even then, we make sure to guide them. Close your windows, turn off porch lights: bees are drawn to light. We help people stay safe.' 'Biology has been my favourite subject since Form 4,' he shared. 'And I ran an ecotourism business for many years, where we dealt with and handled wildlife. I was focused on insects and plants.' His path shifted during the pandemic. While most stayed home, Chan joined a global project studying bee microbiomes – the gut bacteria of bees – alongside researchers from Switzerland's University of Lausanne and two local universities. 'We needed real-time access to bee colonies for sampling. MBS was the best resource: they were getting complaints and relocation requests almost daily,' Chan recalled. What began as a scientific necessity soon evolved into a calling. The deeper Chan went, the more committed he became – not just to research, but to protecting bees and the ecosystems they support. Indeed, the work he does is important. Relocating beehives isn't just about keeping people safe – it's about protecting the very creatures that keep our ecosystems thriving. Without them, entire food systems would begin to collapse. In a world where bees are often misunderstood – swatted at, sprayed, or seen as threats – Chan's goal is as much about education as it is about rescue. Every hive safely moved is a small victory for biodiversity. 'Beehives can be relocated. It's not necessary to kill them, which seems to be most people's natural response. Yes, they can be dangerous, but in most cases, they are actually not. We can learn to live harmoniously with bees,' he concluded. Oil majors seek bids for transport of carbon from Singapore
The S-Hub consortium has issued a request for proposal to companies for the provision of services to transport and store carbon dioxide. (Shell pic) SINGAPORE : A carbon capture project in Singapore led by oil giants Exxon Mobil Corp and Shell Plc is seeking bids for transport and storage of the gas, as part of the country's efforts to limit industrial emissions. The S-Hub consortium, which is the lead developer, 'has issued a request for proposal to companies across Asia Pacific for the provision of services to transport and store carbon dioxide,' a spokesman from Singapore's Energy Market Authority said in response to a Bloomberg query. The feasibility study for the cross-border carbon capture and storage project was started last year, with the aim of storing emissions from sectors such as oil and gas under the seabed or deep underground. Indonesia and Malaysia are among the few countries in Asia where CO2, once captured, can be viably stored underground. 'Exxon Mobil has secured 'exclusive' rights to CO2 storage in Indonesia and Malaysia,' CEO Darren Woods said in 2023.
