BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — On Friday, Bogdan Boceanu was convicted of stealing EBT benefits from needy families in Kern County.
Boceanu was found with more than $4,000 in stolen cash and 36 cloned EBT cards. He will serve 16 months in a Kern County Jail. His defense accepted an indicated sentence by the Judge Elizabet Rodriguez.
This marks the second conviction in the romanian crime ring stealing EBT benefits.
Let's take a look back at how we got here.
Bogdan Boceanu was arrested in Delano and had an outstanding warrant. Through our investigation we learned he was first arrested in July of 2024 at the Bank of America in Wasco.
That was where he tried to place a skimmer in the ATM to clone cards.
He posted bail and the case was not filed by the DA until January 2025. Three months later he was re-arrested at the Wells Fargo in Delano and not given bail.
The first Romanian convicted was Alberto-Ionel Baran, who was given an indicated sentence of two years by Judge Gloria Cannon. At the end of his court case it was announced Baran had 175 EBT fraudulent cards that had over $121,000 in stolen benefits.
Baran's sentencing is scheduled for June 3, and Boceanu's for August 22.
Three Romanians accused of EBT theft are still making their way through Kern's court system, they are Norbert Karaba, Giorgio Marcelo, and Nicolae Bud.
Mari-Mar Milica and Fernando Stantu are still wanted for their arrest. The total stands at seven linked to EBT theft by Kern's Romanian Crime Ring.

NATO scrambles jets after Russian strikes near Romania

Two German fighter jets were dispatched to Romania's border with Ukraine on Tuesday in response to Russian attacks in the region. Moscow targeted Ukrainian ports on the Danube River, according to Romania's Ministry of National Defense. However, no intrusions from Russian forces were detected during the German mission. 'The close cooperation with Allies throughout the enhanced Air Policing Missions strengthens Romania's defense capability and contributes to NATO's deterrence and defense posture on the eastern flank,' Romania's Ministry of National Defense said in a Wednesday statement. Despite these escalations, Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Monday warned NATO leaders against deploying troops in Ukraine. Earlier this month, Russia hit civilian infrastructure in Ukraine's Ismail region near Romania. Defense officials deployed two Romanian F-16 fighter jets in response to the assault's close proximity. In recent weeks, NATO leaders have increased pressure on the Kremlin as its war with Ukraine continues past its three-year mark. European leaders met with President Trump at the White House this week alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an attempt to solidify peace in the region. Last week, Trump also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss an end to the conflict. But Moscow has continued its attacks on its neighbor. On Monday, Putin ordered a major overnight attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure followed by a Wednesday drone strike on Okhtyrka, which injured 14 people including a family with young children. Both offensives also caused widespread fires. 'In total, more than 60 drones and a ballistic missile were used,' Zelensky wrote in a Wednesday post on social media, with accompanying footage of the damage. 'All of these are demonstrative strikes that only confirm the need to put pressure on Moscow, the need to impose new sanctions and tariffs until diplomacy is fully effective,' he added. Trump has refrained from sanctioning Russian trading partners but has remained adamant about ending the war.

NATO flies jets over Romania-Ukraine border during Russian attack

Aug. 20 (UPI) -- NATO deployed two German fighter jets in its airspace in response to a Russian drone attack on Ukraine, officials in Romania said Wednesday. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense ts aerial surveillance system "identified groups of drones launched by the Russian Federation, which attacked the Ukrainian ports on the Danube," late Tuesday into early Wednesday. In a NATO response, two German Air Force Typhoon planes that had already been stationed at Romania's 57th Air Base to help keep the nation's airspace secure were scrambled to monitor the country's border with Ukraine in the Romanian county of Tulcea. According to the Defense Ministry, no aerial vehicles of any sort were found to intrude into Romanian airspace and the jets returned to the airbase without issue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyconfirmed Wednesday that a gas distribution station in the country's Odesa region, which borders Tulcea County, was among several places attacked by Russia during the overnight. The ministry had previously reported earlier this month it had contacted NATO after Russian forces launched a drone attack on Ukraine near the Romanian border, close enough to set off warning alerts in northern Tulcea. NATO had announced in July that German fighter jets were being deployed to Romania for eight months as part of the alliance's air policing mission in southeastern Europe, taking over for the Italian Air Force, which was previously handling that task.
