Kremlin signals openness to Putin-Trump talks in Beijing
The Chinese capital is set to host a military parade on September 3 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Putin has already accepted an invitation to attend the event, as per RT.
Amid speculation about a potential high-level meeting involving Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, RT cited a report from Japan's Kyodo News suggesting that China has extended an invitation to Trump. The Times also reported that Beijing may be positioning itself to host a trilateral summit, though Chinese officials have not confirmed any such plans.
"If it so happens that [Trump] is there, then, of course, we cannot rule out that the question of the expediency of holding a meeting will be raised," Peskov told reporters, as quoted by RT. He added that the Kremlin has not yet received confirmation regarding Trump's attendance in Beijing.
On Sunday, Peskov noted that while a future meeting between Putin and Trump is expected, "it would require a lot of preparation, and the time has not yet come," RT reported.
The renewed speculation comes after a phone call between Trump and Xi Jinping in June. During the call, Trump reportedly said he had received an invitation to visit China, though no specific date was provided, RT said.
Putin and Trump have also held several phone conversations in recent months, primarily focused on the Ukraine conflict. Trump recently criticized the Russian president for resisting a settlement, a remark that drew a calm response from the Kremlin. "It viewed the criticism calmly and intended to maintain dialogue with Washington," RT reported.
China, meanwhile, continues to project itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict. According to RT, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for a "fair, lasting, and binding" peace agreement and urged all parties to prioritize a ceasefire and political dialogue. Beijing has also voiced support for renewed direct talks between Moscow and Kiev.
The last in-person meeting between Putin and Trump took place in 2018 during the Russia-US summit held in Helsinki, Finland.

Columbia University to pay $200mn in settlement with Trump admin over anti-semitism claims
New York: Columbia University has agreed to pay a $200m to President Donald Trump's administration over accusations it failed to protect its Jewish students from harassment. A settlement that was reached on Wednesday and which will be paid to the federal government over three years, was announced in a statement by the university. In exchange, the government has agreed to return some of the $400m in federal grants it froze or terminated in March. In exchange for the return of hundreds of millions in research grants, Columbia will also pledge to follow laws banning the consideration of race in admissions and hiring, and follow through on other commitments to reduce antisemitism and unrest on campus that it agreed to in March, the New York Times reported. Columbia will also pay USD 21 million to settle investigations brought by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. "This agreement marks an important step forward after a period of sustained federal scrutiny and institutional uncertainty," Claire Shipman, Columbia's acting president, said in the release. "The settlement was carefully crafted to protect the values that define us and allow our essential research partnership with the federal government to get back on track." The Trump Administration's deal with Columbia University is a seismic shift in our nation's fight to hold institutions that accept American taxpayer dollars accountable for antisemitic discrimination and harassment, US Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon said in a post on X. Trump posted on Truth Social platform: "Columbia has also committed to ending their ridiculous DEI policies, admitting students based ONLY on MERIT, and protecting the Civil Liberties of their students on campus. "Numerous other Higher Education Institutions that have hurt so many, and been so unfair and unjust, and have wrongly spent federal money, much of it from our government, are upcoming," Trump posted. As per a report in the Al Jazeera, Columbia was among dozens of US universities that were roiled by protests against Israel's war in Gaza throughout the spring and summer of 2024. Ukraine updates: Third round of talks ends in Istanbul
According to media reports, the Ukrainian and Russian delegations concluded their negotiations in Istanbul by agreeing to carry out another prisoner exchange. The Russian state news agency TASS reported that the talks lasted around 40 minutes. The negotiation team leaders from Ukraine and Russia are in one-on-one talks in Istanbul, news agencies have reported. Russia's Vladimir Medinsky and Ukraine's Rustem Umerov reportedly met ahead of a third round of peace talks. Russia says agreed with Ukraine to swap 1,200 POW each Moscow and Kyiv have agreed to exchange 1,200 prisoners of war each during peace talks in Istanbul, a Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said after the talks in Istanbul. In addition to the POW exchange, Russia also offered to hand Ukraine the bodies of 3,000 killed soldiers, the negotiator added. "Continuing the exchange of prisoners of war, we have agreed that at least 1,200 additional prisoners of war will be exchanged on both sides in the near future," Medinsky said at a press conference. Medinsky also said that Russia offered Ukraine a 24-hour to 48-hour ceasefire. When asked about Kyiv's bid for a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Medinsky said such a meeting should only be for signing documents and not for holding discussions.
