Germany sees GCC visitor growth in 2024

Germany recorded strong growth in visitors from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in 2024, with a 1.2 percent year-on-year increase and a 21 percent jump compared to 2022, officials announced during the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025 in Dubai.
The German National Tourist Office GCC (GNTO GCC) revealed that over 489,000 GCC nationals visited Germany last year, contributing to more than 1.2 million overnight stays. Direct flights linking GCC cities to major German hubs like Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Hamburg have played a significant role in making Germany more accessible to regional travellers.
Yamina Sofo, Director at GNTO GCC, said Germany's appeal to Gulf visitors continues to grow thanks to its cultural diversity, natural attractions, and enhanced connectivity. 'Germany has witnessed considerable growth from the GCC region post-pandemic, and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors in 2025,' she said.
Strengthening this trend, Lufthansa Group Airlines announced an expansion of its services to Germany, with over 120 direct connections per week from the GCC set to begin in October 2025. Lufthansa's Senior Director of Sales for the Middle East, Luis Monreal, noted that increased demand has led to new routes through airlines like Eurowings, offering more direct flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Jeddah to German cities beyond Frankfurt and Munich. Germany is also stepping up its tourism campaigns this year. Cultural attractions are in the spotlight under the 'Cultureland Germany' initiative, featuring destinations such as Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture for 2025. In parallel, the 'Embrace German Nature' campaign promotes the country's UNESCO-protected natural reserves and scenic hiking trails, while the 'Simply Feel Good' campaign focuses on sustainable travel options, highlighting Germany's 20 sustainably certified regions and cities.
Celebrations also mark the 50th anniversary of the German Fairy Tale Route, a 600-kilometre scenic trail connecting around 70 locations tied to famous fairy tales such as Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.
Additionally, Germany's digital push was unveiled with 'Emma', an AI-powered travel companion designed to guide visitors and enhance their experience through personalised digital interaction.
Germany's increased presence at ATM this year includes 27 co-exhibitors occupying 135 square metres, reflecting the country's growing efforts to attract more Middle East travellers.

Xi says China, Brazil can model ‘self-reliance' for Global South

TDT | Beijing China's President Xi Jinping told his Brazilian counterpart Tuesday the two countries could set an example of 'self-reliance' for emerging powers, as trade and geopolitical challenges mount. The two leaders have both sought in recent months to present their countries as staunch defenders of the multilateral trading system -- in stark contrast with US President Donald Trump's tariff onslaught. Xi's call with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday came just hours after Trump announced another 90-day pause to blistering tariffs on China. It also followed indications from Lula last week he planned to speak with the leaders of India and China to consider a coordinated response to US trade measures. Xi told Lula that ties between China and Brazil are now at an all-time high, according to state news agency Xinhua. He said China would 'work with Brazil to set an example of unity and self-reliance among major countries in the Global South' and 'jointly build a more just world and more sustainable planet', according to Xinhua. Xi added that 'all countries should unite and firmly oppose unilateralism and protectionism', Xinhua reported -- a thinly veiled reference to US tariffs. A statement by the Brazilian presidency said the phone call lasted about an hour, during which time Lula and Xi discussed a range of topics including the war in Ukraine and combatting climate change. 'Both agreed on the role of the G20 and BRICS in defending multilateralism', the statement said, referring to the Group of Twenty major economies and a bloc of emerging powers.

Apple teases future tech direction

TDT | agencies Apple's famously stealthy approach to product development may be shifting gears, with CEO Tim Cook offering rare glimpses of its next wave of innovations. In recent earnings calls and interviews, Cook reaffirmed that the iPhone remains central to Apple's ecosystem—even in a future featuring AI-powered devices. 'It's difficult to see a world where iPhone's not living in it,' he stated, emphasizing that emerging devices are intended to complement the iPhone, not replace it. One area of growing interest is smart eyewear. Though Cook initially dismissed glasses as impractical in 2015, he has since updated that view. He cites the Vision Pro—released in 2024—as only the 'early innings' of Apple's progress in augmented reality and hinted at ongoing work to shrink and refine wearable designs. Apple is also reportedly exploring foldable devices—a move into a segment already occupied by competitors like Google and Samsung. In his signature 'not first, but best' spirit, Cook's comments suggest that Apple is taking its time to ensure any foldable technology meets its established standards for polish and functionality. These developments form part of a broader strategy where AI, AR wearables, and novel form factors appear set to shape Apple's long-term roadmap. Yet despite the hints, Apple maintains its trademark reserve—preferring to prioritize refinement over rushing into new categories.
