Suspect in deadly motorcycle crash had prior DUI arrest, released on $1,500 bond

James Warren, of Douglas County, is charged with vehicular homicide in the Easter Sunday death of 68-year-old Norman North of College Park.
Warren had been out on $1,500 bond for a March DUI and failure to maintain lane arrest in Douglas County.
North's funeral service is scheduled for next week.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. - James Warren is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide in connection with the Easter Sunday afternoon death of 68-year-old Norman North.
Court records show Warren had been arrested on March 22 for DUI and failure to maintain lane charges.
What we know
North was riding his motorcycle in Douglas County along Highway 166 between Chapel Hill Road and Big A Road, when authorities say the suspect collided with North and allegedly fled the scene.
According to the arrest warrants, Warren fled the scene, resisted arrest, and spat in the face and chest of a deputy at Wellstar Douglas Medical Center.
Also, according to a warrant, 42 pills, described as Alprazolam, were found on the suspect.
What they're saying
North's brother, Brett North, says his brother was a motorcycle enthusiast. A big brother who was described as kind and generous.
"Caring, tenacious, those are words that would sum him up," said North. "The last thing I got from him was a text around 2 o'clock, and it said 'Happy Easter. I love you.'"
He says their family was stunned to learn of North's death and couldn't believe the suspect had bonded out of the Douglas County jail for an earlier DUI arrest.
"Until us as a society stand up and say 'we've had enough,' I don't know what the answer is," exclaimed North. "We are not going to fill our jails with DUIs."

Underage drinking party may have preceded Bedford teen's death, chief says
The 17-year-old Bedford High School junior who died in a motor vehicle incident Sunday had been at a party where there may have been underage drinking, police said. The teenage boy, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after police and emergency responders went to Wallace Road around 8:15 p.m. following a report of a person jumping out of a car near Stagecoach Lane. The circumstances that led to the boy's death are still unclear though, Bedford Police Chief Daniel Douidi said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. 'A preliminary investigation indicates that the student, a 17-year-old male, exited a moving vehicle under unclear circumstances while traveling on Wallace Road,' Douidi said. 'The incident appears to have followed a social gathering that may have involved underage drinking. We are and have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the gathering, including any potential violations of the law.' The name of the driver of the car involved in the incident has not been released. Douidi said it was with 'great sadness' that he confirmed the incident that led to the death of the local teenager, the third teen killed in a Bedford motor vehicle incident over a 49-day stretch. Lauren Souza, a 16-year-old Trinity High School junior from Bedford, was killed in a crash early Easter morning on April 20. On May 28, a Manchester 13-year-old died in a crash at the Kilton Road exit off Route 101. 'The Bedford Police Department is working closely with the School District and community leaders to support students and staff during this difficult time,' Douidi said. Bedford High Principal Bob Jozokos sent a letter to parents first thing Monday informing them that a student had died and that resources were available for students at the school. The investigation is ongoing. Police have not said if any arrests have been made or are imminent. 'Our hearts are with the family, friends, and entire school community mourning this tragic loss. We urge everyone, especially parents, to understand the life-threatening risks associated with underage drinking and gatherings that are not properly supervised. No parent should have to face the loss of a child under these circumstances,' Douidi said. Jury deliberations started at 12 p.m. on Tuesday and the jury could still have a long way to go. The suspect, 18-year-old Ismael Cruz Del Cid, is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and using a firearm in commission of a felony. EXCLUSIVE - The mother of a 14-year-old that was shot and killed spoke exclusively to FOX 5 as a jury deliberated the fate of her son's alleged killer. FOX 5's Tisha Lewis spoke exclusively to the mother of 14-year-old Michai Malave. What we know Jury deliberations started at 12 p.m. on Tuesday and the jury could still have a long way to go. In this type of case, jury deliberation can last anywhere between 24 to 36 hours. This all comes after 18-year-old Ismael Cruz Del Cid, on the left, underwent a jury trial after admitting to the fatal shooting that took place in March 2024. The shooting happened on the 1300 block of Coppermine Road in Herndon. Del Cid is accused of fatally shooting Malave and another teen who survived. Investigators say this was not a random shooting and that Del Cid and the victims knew each other. Attorneys for the defendant claimed it was self-defense but Malave was not armed. The Commonwealth Attorney says the shooting was pre-mediated murder. What they're saying His family says they're taking it one day at a time. They just want this trauma to end. Malave's mother tells FOX 5 she's doing her best to navigate the grief and the pain that comes with losing a child. "I'm not sure how we're navigating it other than with the grace of God and just family. I'm in other grief groups with mothers who have lost their children the same way and that helps me get through. I'm mostly still in the shock of disbelief sometimes. A part of my mind will believe that he's still at a friend's house and it will hit me that he's gone and it's just terrible," said Jenna Malave, Michai Malave's mother. What's next The jury will resume deliberations at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Del Cid is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and using a firearm in commission of a felony.
