Indian national gets 35 years, caning for murdering girlfriend in KL
The High Court found Palwinder Singh, 28, guilty of strangling the 36-year-old woman after a sexual encounter in a Bukit Bintang hotel.
Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid ruled that the defence failed to cast reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case.
'The accused is found guilty under Section 302 of the Penal Code and sentenced to 35 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane,' he said.
The former technician was ordered to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest on October 6, 2022.
The crime occurred in a hotel room on Jalan Alor between 8.30 pm and 9.20 pm that same day.
During mitigation, defence lawyer K. Viknesvaran argued for leniency, citing Palwinder Singh's remorse and lack of prior offences.
Deputy public prosecutor Syajaratudur Abd Rahman represented the prosecution. – Bernama

Four-day remand for man who went back to crime scene to retrieve slippers
BALIK PULAU: A 21-year-old man has been remanded for four days to assist in an investigation into an alleged house trespass involving the residence of a TikTok influencer. The remand order was issued this morning by magistrate Chia Huey Ting. Earlier, the suspect, was brought to the Balik Pulau Court Complex at around 9.05am. He kept his head down as he walked. It was reported that a man, who broke into a house in Batu Maung yesterday, was caught after he returned to the scene to retrieve items he had left behind. The matter came to light in a viral video posted on the Facebook account "Amigos Media Viral". Southwest police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam told the New Straits Times today that the suspect had gone back to the house to retrieve his slippers. Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had entered the home through the back door while the domestic helper was outside disposing of rubbish. Upon realising the presence of the TikTok influencer, the suspect fled the scene. However, he later returned to the house to collect belongings he had left behind. It was then that the complainant and several friends managed to apprehend the suspect and handed him over to members of a patrol unit on duty in Batu Maung. The case is being investigated under Section 448 of the Penal Code for house trespass, which carries a maximum jail term of three years, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both.

Foiled in Setia Alam: Snatch thief caught after botched necklace grab
SHAH ALAM, Aug 5 — A man's attempt to snatch a necklace from a local in Setia Alam was thwarted when bystanders caught him yesterday evening. Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident occurred at 7.07pm when the 37-year-old victim was heading to his car. The suspect, riding a motorcycle, tried to pull off the victim's necklace, but the victim fought back quickly. 'The suspect lost control and fell from his motorcycle. He tried to escape but was caught by nearby bystanders. 'Police later confirmed that the suspect, aged 30, owned the motorcycle but had used a fake licence plate. He is now under remand until August 7,' he said in a statement. Mohd Iqbal urged the public to remain alert and avoid being alone in isolated areas to reduce the risk of crime. The court fixed Sept 30 for pre-trial case management (PTCM) and released the accused on bail of RM2,500 in two sureties. In another case, a 39-year-old woman was charged with stealing three units of skincare products from a retail outlet at a shopping mall.
