Chicken jockey: Why Minecraft fans are going wild at the cinema

BBC News09-04-2025
Have you been to see the new Minecraft film? What was it like in the cinema you visited? The film simply called A Minecraft Movie, has big stars like Jason Momoa and Jack Black. It tells the story of four characters pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, from the best-selling video game. The UK Cinema Association said there has been an "exceptional" crowd response, with many young fans shouting out, throwing popcorn, and cheering when certain characters appear on screen.
Some cinema-goers have loved seeing their fellow audience members getting involved. Liverpool comedian Sam Avery even told the BBC that seeing the film with his 10-year-old sons was "honestly the most joyous cinemagoing experience I've ever had".But others feel that all the noise can be disruptive. Some cinemas have warned that "loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated", and that people could be asked to leave if necessary.
Why is there so much audience reaction to A Minecraft Movie?
This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Back in 2022 when Minions: The Rise of Gru was released there was a trend for young people wearing suits, making noise and throwing things during the film.At that time social media was said to be the source, and it seems this is also likely to be the case for A Minecraft Movie. After people have seen others behave in a similar way on TikTok and other social media platforms, it can be understandable that they'd want to have the same experience. There have also been lots of memes shared featuring certain lines and scenes from the film, which have helped build up the hype for people before they have even seen the film for themselves.
What is chicken jockey and why has it created so much hype?
Chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken! One of the reasons it's getting fans so excited is because it's rarely seen in the game. Most people only have around a 0.25% chance of seeing it.The chicken jockey moment was also teased in trailers so for those who have been waiting for the film to come out for a long time, the anticipation has been building. It's not just chicken jockey that's been getting a reaction in cinemas. There has also been lots clapping and cheering when fans have spotted something in the film that they recognised from the game, or when a new character appeared on screen. This has been particularly the case for the first appearance of Jack Black, as the delivery of some of his lines has become iconic, with people enjoying mimicking him.
Is there a way to keep all cinema-goers happy?
Dad Sam Avery, said there were "bound to be people" annoyed by the noise, but that he and his family were going to go and see it again and would "be disappointed if it's not the same atmosphere again".UK Cinema Association chief executive Phil Clapp has also said he was happy to see people so excited to be at the cinema, and has asked people to "please enjoy themselves".He told the BBC: "At a time when some claim that young people are now foregoing the cinema experience, it's clearly great to see such a high level of engagement."But he has also asked "those taking part to be mindful of the enjoyment of other cinema-goers".Some cinemas have also been trying to find a way to look after those who like a quiet cinema experience and those who want more of an atmosphere. One example is Cineworld who have arranged special "Chicken Jockey Screenings" on 13 April, where fans are encouraged to "dress up, whoop, yelp and clap their way through this block-busting adventure".What would you prefer? A quiet cinema or one where you can get involved?

United Airlines flight canceled after female passenger had 'biohazard' diarrhea that destroyed bathroom

A woman has freely admitted that she caused a United Airlines flight to be canceled after spending an hour and a half destroying the plane's tiny bathroom with her diarrhea and vomit. Meghan Reinertsen, a writer and actor, said the nightmare journey happened about a year ago when she was coming home from Portugal. The first symptoms of what she would later find out was food poisoning struck her at Newark Liberty International Airport just moments before she was supposed to board her connecting flight back to Indianapolis. 'Something is brewing. Something is happening that I am not prepared to deal with,' she said in a TikTok video that has gotten nearly 20 million views. Despite her reservations, she boarded the plane and 'hoped for the best'. She spent the next 30 minutes in her window seat crying, sweating profusely and writhing in abject pain. The plane eventually took off. For much of that time, she was only staying seated because the seatbelt sign was on, but at some point, she remembered the story of the woman on a Delta plane who pooped her pants in her seat mid-flight. 'I couldn't let that happen to me,' she said. 'I make it to the bathroom, and for the next 20 minutes I have more diarrhea than any human should ever have in their life.' While she was in the bathroom, she began feeling the urge to throw up as well. She said she panicked in the tiny, claustrophobic area before she had the presence of mind to scream for help from the flight attendants, who gave her bags. The flight crew allowed her to stay in the bathroom for the entire flight. They even got special clearance from the pilot to allow her to remain where she was for landing. Reinertsen said she couldn't make it back to her seat in her condition, which prompted the flight attendant to tell her through the door to 'brace for impact'. Once they were on the ground, she was told that the next flight with that plane had been canceled. 'A flight attendant comes over and says, "Everybody's off the plane now, go ahead and take your time and come out when you can, the next flight has been cancelled,"' Reinertsen said. 'In the moment, I'm not thinking it is because of me.' The flight attendant then told her that a hazmat team would be coming to clean up her mess. 'Got it, so you canceled that flight because of you don't know if I brought something back from Portugal. And I am a biohazard. I am patient zero,' she said. She even had to be put in a wheelchair when she was ready to disembark because she couldn't walk. 'They had to wheel me off this plane. I can't walk. They gotta get me in a wheelchair,' she said. They wheeled her to baggage claim where she had to endure the shocked stares of all her fellow passengers who undoubtedly knew she was the woman in the bathroom for the entire flight. Reinertsen said her devastating illness, which persisted days after the horrific flight, came as a result of eating an undercooked hamburger the night before her flight. United Airlines confirmed to Metro that this incident happened in July 2024. 'This incident occurred in July 2024. Our flight crew is trained to assist customers in situations like this and helped as much as they could during the flight and upon arrival in Indianapolis,' a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement.

Alex Kingston gets seal of approval from Strictly Come Dancing pro - 'Extremely cool'

Strictly Come Dancing has announced six celebrities who will be hitting the ballroom later this year, but one in particular has excited professional dancer Dianne Buswell Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswel l has branded a 2025 contestant 'extremely cool' as Doctor Who enthusiasts were left 'screaming' following a major announcement. ‌ With mere weeks remaining before the annual BBC programme kicks off, the initial quartet of celebrities were unveiled on Monday (August 11). ‌ The opening reveal caught supporters off guard as Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was disclosed during an instalment of children's news show Newsround. Known as Nitro, Harry is most famous for taking part in the Bradley and Barney Walsh edition of Gladiators. ‌ Additionally, Harry is a multiple gold medal-winning Team GB sprinter, who became the first competitor to secure gold medals in both 100 and 200 metres at the World Youth Championships. "After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got. I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track," he said. Later during the evening, Strictly enthusiasts were urged to watch The One Show as three additional contestants were being revealed by Roman Kemp and Alex Scott. ‌ The opening member of the trio disclosed was Love Island champion Dani Dyer, with the daughter of EastEnders icon Danny Dyer wed to Jarrod Bowen. On joining Strictly Come Dancing, Dani said: "Getting the opportunity to be on Strictly is the second most amazing thing I've done this year! I feel very very blessed and cannot wait to get my dancing shoes on." The third and final celebrity revealed on the magazine programme was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former footballer who represented Leeds United, Atlético Madrid and Chelsea during his playing career. ‌ Following his retirement, Jimmy has established himself as a recognisable figure in football commentary for leading UK sports broadcasters, taken charge of clubs including Burton Albion and Northampton Town and worked as an assistant coach with the England national squad. "Swapping the pitch for the ballroom is certainly not something I've done before but I'm looking forward to tackling a fun challenge! Bring on a new type of footwork, with hopefully no own goals," he joked. Nevertheless, it was the reveal of Doctor Who icon Alex Kingston that seems to have generated the greatest buzz across social media platforms. ‌ Following her rise to fame on the medical drama ER as Dr Elizabeth Corday, Alex went on to portray one of the legendary sci-fi programme's most beloved characters. Featured on Doctor Who from 2008 to 2015, Alex brought River Song, aka The Doctor's Wife, to life alongside three different Doctors on television and remains active in audio adventures and literary works. Alex has also appeared in Douglas Is Cancelled, Treason, Gilmore Girls, Boudica, Lost in Austen, Dodger, A Discovery of Witches, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Arrow. Her impressive theatre credits include portraying Lady Macbeth and Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. On the official Strictly Instagram page, Dianne, who claimed the Glitterball Trophy with blind comedian Chris McCausland last year, captured everyone's sentiments. She posted: "Extremely cool love this!" To which Alex, who is presently in Italy, responded: "So excited to get dancing!". ‌ Adding to the praise was Motsi Mabuse, who penned: "Welcome to the Strictly family, Alex! Can't wait to see your personality shine on that dance floor, here's to sparkle, rhythm, and unforgettable moments! Woop Woop." Countless Doctor Who enthusiasts couldn't hide their delight as they anticipate discovering whether Alex excels at dancing as much as she does at fighting aliens. @bobby_seagull declared: "Was such a big fan of hers on Doctor Who!" @mommagledders shared: "I love her so much! She would be great with Johannes!". @stephlhulme penned: "Ahhh! I am a big Whovian and this announcement has made my day." @richardfrankscomedy noted: "Such a cool signing." @giselle_barajas1234 exclaimed: "DOCTOR WHO FANS ARE SCREAMING. YES ALEX." @calum_creates suggested: "I know it's been done before, but please can Alex dance to the Doctor Who theme!"
