Bayern Munich's Florian Wirtz statement speaks volumes after Liverpool U-turn

Daily Mirrora day ago

Liverpool are making progress in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, despite Bayern Munich long being considered the frontrunners for his sought-after signature
Liverpool's stealthy approach when pursuing Florian Wirtz has helped them steal a march on Bayern Munich in the race to sign him. Wirtz, 22, is understood to be leaning towards a move to the Reds, even though Bayern had been the favourites for months.
Anfield chiefs recently sat down for a meeting with Wirtz and his parents near Blackpool, impressing them with their vision for the German playmaker. Talks are now underway with Bayer Leverkusen about what kind of deal it would take to prise Wirtz away.

For a time, it looked as if Manchester City would be Bayern's main competitors for the Leverkusen star but Liverpool emerged from the shadows while City backed out over financial concerns. It's that quiet charm offensive, a contrast to Bayern's noisier approach, which appears to have made the difference.

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has been speaking about Wirtz's prospective move to Merseyside, revealing a key aspect of negotiations. "I think the Wirtz family was also impressed by how they (Liverpool) handled it," Hamann told Bild. "Discreetly, quietly, all in the background."
Bayern's approach couldn't be more different. Various club chiefs have been speaking about Wirtz for weeks, potentially muddying the waters for a deal, having been asked to pay £126million.
Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen recently pointed at their involvement in the Club World Cup as a reason why the 22-year-old should join them instead of Liverpool. "Much more has been written than spoken," Dreesen told Munich newspaper Tageszeitung via the ECHO.

"FC Bayern is one of the absolute top clubs in Europe and the world. Our appeal among fans, but also among players, is enormous. The fact that not every player will end up with us is simply part of the package; it's the same for other top clubs.
"But everyone knows: with FC Bayern, you can win everything every year, you're involved in every competition – the upcoming Club World Cup is a good example of that.

"Just look at which clubs are represented there – and, most of all, which (clubs) aren't. The best European clubs are competing there - including FC Bayern. Our appeal, sporting ambitions, and economic power are well known to all top players around the world."
Club president Herbert Hainer has also been candid on Bayern's pursuit, telling Abendzeitung: "[Director of sport] Max Eberl has informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool. I can't say how things will continue with Leverkusen."

Modric's 'first choice' for summer move revealed amid Rangers links

The veteran playmaker was released by Real Madrid and was linked with a move to Ibrox if the Spanish giants' ex-assistant manager, Davide Ancelotti, got the Rangers job. Modric has been tipped to go to the MLS to end his career, with the 186-times capped legend turning 40 in September. Read more: However, his national team manager Dalic thinks he will stay in Europe. He said: "'Luka will decide for himself, he has a lot of calls and offers. There is no need to rush anywhere, he needs to see and think about what is best for him and his family. "It is important to us that he remains available to the national team and I know his goal is to qualify for the World Cup. "I am convinced that he will make the right decision, that he will be ready for both the club and the national team. Luka is a great example for everyone. 'Everybody was surprised' – How PSG moved on from Mbappe to become UCL finalists

There were many questions as to how Paris Saint-Germain would fare without Kylian Mbappe, but Luis Enrique's side have come up with all of the answers so far Many thought Kylian Mbappe's departure would be a disaster, but Paris Saint-Germain have stood tall. The prodigal French striker allowed his contract to run down, before departing the capital to join Real Madrid last summer as a free agent. His exit marked the end of a glitzy era, where PSG signed the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Sergio Ramos and Mbappe, without ever winning the Champions League. PSG were planning for his exit, while he was still at the club, bolstering their squad with a transfer outlay of 16 players, 12 of which were under the age of 25. ‌ With Luis Enrique given full freedom to apply his philosophy, their ascent from glitzy, European chokers to Champions League favourites has been breath-taking. Even former PSG midfielder and Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Claude Makelele was surprised by the improvement. ‌ In an exclusive interview with Mirror Football, speaking on behalf of bet365, Makelele said: "Kylian Mbappe is a quality player. But in football, you cannot calculate these things. "I think since Mbappe has been gone, Paris Saint-Germain have not been under as much pressure. They have had time to build different platforms within the team and, slowly, slowly, they have grown. "People have not focussed as much on them, they have focussed on Real Madrid, Mbappe and the story and it has worked out in a good way for PSG. They've had the time, but when they arrived, everybody was surprised. ‌ "But Paris Saint-Germain have got great quality, great players and deserve to be in the final.' Watch our full Champions League final interview with Paul Ince and Claude Makelele here ‌ For a long time, many teams felt they would stop PSG if they controlled Mbappe. Now opposing defenders have to contend with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, Bardley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele running at or behind them. That quartet have contributed 73 goals between them this season, while the likes of Goncalo Ramos and Kang-in Lee have also shared 24 goals. One of their few transfer misses has been the signing of French international Randal Kolo-Muani, who has only scored 11 goals in 54 appearances since his £76.4m move from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2023 - in January, the forward was loaned to Juventus. After losing three and drawing one of their first five Champions League matches in the league phase, PSG roared back with dominant victories against RB Salzburg, Manchester City and Stuttgart, before a 10-0 aggregate demolition of Brest in the knockout phase play-off showed they meant business. ‌ Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal all fell before Enrique's young guns. However, Inter Milan is a completely different challenge for the Parisians, as their heavily experienced team have already knocked out one young and dynamic side in Barcelona. But Makelele feels this team are ready for the challenge, as a result of the players that have been brought in during Enrique's project. The Chelsea legend added: "I think they've (PSG) corrected many mistakes they made before. ‌ "Of course, we all dream about a team with a lot of big players, but many teams they cannot deal with this. I think they realised, 'Okay, we will need to build for longer to win these kind of trophies and think in a different way'. "Now, they are achieving success. Teams around the world are taking Paris Saint-Germain seriously. They are a big brand all around the world. ‌ "They are starting to play proper football and they are achieving success. The only trophy waiting for them is the Champions League. It's not easy to win, but they have this opportunity. For me, this game is 50/50." Klopp already made feelings clear as his 'best signing' at Liverpool leaves club

Jurgen Klopp was responsible for the arrival of several top stars at Liverpool but the German icon pinpointed one player in particular as his best signing during his time at Anfield Much to the surprise of Liverpool fans across the globe, Jurgen Klopp doesn't believe either Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk were his best signings during his Anfield tenure. The former Reds boss oversaw the arrival of numerous top talents in his nine-year spell in Merseyside, including the likes of Alisson Becker, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and many more. Despite being at the helm when the aforementioned players made the move to Liverpool, the 57-year-old explained that his best signing at the club wasn't one plucked off the transfer market, instead it was a player he had promoted from within. ‌ When asked on the Pure Football Podcast, Klopp admitted in 2020: "It's Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. We didn't have to buy him but Pep Lijnders my assistant brought him around and said: 'He played No.6 [role] for me. He played full-back, he played right wing, left wing'. ‌ "Then he came and there was only one problem: Trent was not fit enough. But he was a kid so he was not fit enough but we saw immediately, wow, football wise no doubts. "But [he was] not fit enough so we had to work on that. But then he made steps by himself that were really unbelievable and that was really nice to see. Then he made mistakes and didn't give up." Having overseen the growth of the England international at his boyhood club, it was on Friday that the 26-year-old's departure to Real Madrid was confirmed after spending 20 years at Liverpool. ‌ While he was expected to make the move to Spain on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, the Spanish giants have agreed a £10million deal to sign Alexander-Arnold a month early. A deal was completed in order to have the right-back available to play in the Club World Cup who is set to be unveiled by the club on June 1. ‌ A prior announcement of Alexander-Arnold agreeing a deal with Madrid wasn't taken too kindly by Liverpool fans with sections of the Anfield crowd booing him when coming on in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal earlier this month. Klopp - who appeared as a guest of honour at the LFC Foundation Gala Ball before Liverpool's final game of the season against Crystal Palace - backed his former player and admitted he was left disappointed with fans who opted to boo Alexander-Arnold. "I don't want to tell anyone what they should think, I don't want to say what you have to think but I can tell you what you think is wrong. Because I am an old man and I don't waste time with hiding my opinion," said Klopp. ‌ "I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I'm old so it may be my hearing so I turned up the volume and said 'That's booing'. I needed another 10 seconds to realise and then I switched the telly off. I honestly could not have been more disappointed in this moment. This is not us, 100 per cent. "I don't tell you you should not be disappointed or angry, I tell you 'Don't forget'. This club does not forget. We are famous for not forgetting. ‌ "We don't forget anything: we don't forget the good thing and we don't forget the bad thing. But we ignore the bad things and remember the good things. You don't have to be happy he is going, but don't forget what he did for this club because I can't forget it." Arne Slot's side didn't waste time in confirming their plans to move on from the now-Madrid star after they confirmed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong just hours after the Englishman's departure was announced.
