Historic Greenbrier Farms in Chesapeake announces closure for most public events

Yahoo4 days ago

CHESAPEAKE — Historic Greenbrier Farms in Chesapeake announced Thursday that it's immediately closing most of its operations to the public except for some seasonal events.
'It is with sincere regret that we announce Greenbrier Farms will be closed to the public outside of our traditional Christmas, Strawberry, and Pumpkin seasons, effective immediately,' the farm said in a Facebook post on Thursday. 'This difficult decision comes as a result of increasing operational restrictions and pressure from the City of Chesapeake Permitting and Zoning as well as the Chesapeake Health Department.'
When reached Thursday afternoon, a Chesapeake city spokesperson was not immediately able to comment. A representative for the farm could not be reached Thursday.
According to the Facebook post, the farm will also no longer be open to the public for visits to the playground, barnyard animals, or to walk the grounds.
The more than century old historic farm, located just off the Chesapeake Expressway, spans 500 acres and hosts a variety of special events, including weddings. The farm drew a crowd of thousands when it hosted a rally for President Donald Trump last summer.

Jon Stewart Tackles Elon Musk's Exit From the Trump Administration: ‘This Guy Has Seen Some S–t'

On this week's episode of 'The Daily Show,' Jon Stewart covered the end of Elon Musk's chapter with D.O.G.E. and the Trump administration. On May 28, Musk's time as Donald Trump's 'special government employee' came to a close after 128 days. Per the U.S. Department of the Interior, a person can not serve under the title for more than 130 days in a consecutive year. During his time at the White House, Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency, or D.O.G.E., with the intention of slashing excessive government spending. He then cut to Musk's final White House press conference, where he, according to Stewart, looked like a 'guy who had a bad night in a Nashville bar he can't remember,' sporting a 'black eye' and a 'thousand-yard stare.' 'This dude has seen some shit,' Stewart said. 'I'd like to know at least how that happened.' Stewart then played a clip of the press conference, where Musk was asked how he got the black eye. His response: 'I was just horsing around with [my son]. And I said, 'Go ahead, punch me in the face.' And he did.' 'Look, I believe things sometimes do happen when you're roughhousing with your kid,' Stewart said. 'But I'm also sure the one sentence no parent has ever uttered to their child is, 'Go ahead, punch me in the face.'' Stewart added that 'Trump made sure that Elon got something in return' for his service. The clip of the press conference continued, revealing that Trump's parting gift to Musk was a ceremonial golden key. 'I gave him a little special something,' Trump said at the press conference. 'A very special [gift] that I give to very special people. I have given it to some, but it goes to very special people, and I thought I'd given it to Elon as a presentation from our country.' 'You couldn't just give him the fucking key? You had to make sure everybody knows you give them to a lot of people,' Stewart said. ''You know, I've got a bunch of these. I give them to special people like… Who's the guy who brings me my Diet Cokes? I give him one for every Diet Coke. Anyway, enjoy your useless key.'' Watch the entire segment below. El Salvador President Nayib Bukele defies critics: ‘I don't care if they call me a dictator'

Nayib Bukele celebrated his re-elected as president of El Salvador. Human rights defenders criticised his rule. But he rejected criticism, arguing he is achieving results. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele said he would rather be branded a 'dictator' than allow criminals to run loose, defying critics in a barnstorming speech marking one year since his re-election. His hardline approach to El Salvador's powerful gangs has made him one of the world's most domestically popular leaders, even as human rights defenders raise alarm over arbitrary arrests and eroding civil liberties. 'I don't care if they call me a dictator. I'd rather be called a dictator than see Salvadorans killed in the streets,' he said during his speech at the National Theatre. First elected in 2019, Bukele was returned to office in a landslide vote last year after the Constitutional Court knocked down a prohibition on consecutive terms. His second stint in office has been characterised by an alliance with US President Donald Trump on deportations as well as what critics describe as a widening offensive against human rights defenders. But Bukele accused NGOs of defending criminals and suggested the press was joining an 'organised attack' spearheaded by international groups. Let them discuss semantics while we remain focused on achieving results. Nayib Bukele 'Contrary to the lies they spread day and night, we have more results than any other government in all our history.' Bukele's war on gangs is widely credited with slashing homicides to the lowest rate in three decades. But rights groups say he has increasingly abused the state of emergency and crackdown on crime as a pretext to silence dissidents. In May, a coalition of rights groups, including Amnesty International, condemned rising repression under Bukele after the arrest of prominent lawyer Ruth Eleonora Lopez. Lopez was arrested on 18 May and accused of embezzling state funds when she worked for an electoral court a decade ago. Marvin Recinos/AFP A vocal critic of Bukele's anti-crime policy, she worked for a rights group that was investigating alleged state corruption and assisting Venezuelans deported by the US and imprisoned in El Salvador. Washington is paying Bukele's government to imprison 288 migrants accused by the Trump administration of belonging to gangs. Two activists were also arrested in May, while in February, the leader of the Human and Community Rights Defence Unit Fidel Zavala was detained and accused of links with gangs. Last month, Bukele's allies in the Legislative Assembly imposed a Foreign Agents Law levying a 30% tax on organisations receiving overseas funding and requiring them to join a special registry. Bukele's human rights commissioner Andres Guzman, who has defended the leader against allegations of abuses, told AFP at the end of May that he has resigned. 'In this first year of the second unconstitutional term, there is an authoritarian escalation. It is the consolidation of dictatorship,' Ingrid Escobar, director of the NGO Humanitarian Legal Aid, told AFP.

Trump wants Senate to return ‘Big Beautiful Bill' to his desk before July 4

President Donald Trump stated in a post to Truth Social: 'Passing THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL is a Historic Opportunity to turn our Country around after four disastrous years under Joe Biden. We will take a massive step to balancing our Budget by enacting the largest mandatory Spending Cut, EVER, and Americans will get to keep more of their money with the largest Tax Cut, EVER, and no longer taxing Tips, Overtime, or Social Security for Seniors – Something 80 Million Voters supported in November. It will unleash American Energy by expediting permitting for Energy, and refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It will make American Air Travel GREAT AGAIN by purchasing the final Air Traffic Control System. We will secure our skies from our adversaries by building The Golden Dome, and secure our Border by building more of our Wall, and supercharging the deportation of the millions of Criminal Illegals Joe Biden allowed to walk right into our Country. It will kick millions of Illegals off Medicaid, and make sure SNAP is focused on Americans ONLY! It will also restore Choice and Affordability for Car purchases by REPEALING Biden's EV Mandate, and all of the GREEN NEW SCAM Tax Credits and Spending. THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL also protects our beautiful children by stopping funding for sick sex changes for minors. With the Senate coming back to Washington today, I call on all of my Republican friends in the Senate and House to work as fast as they can to get this Bill to MY DESK before the Fourth of JULY. Thank you for your attention to this matter!'
