There's a public holiday for the Ekka today – here's what you need to know

Across Queensland, residents are entitled to a public holiday for their region's agricultural, horticultural or industrial show.
There's no statewide show day, so instead these are held on separate days, depending on the region.
In total, there are about 60 different show days.
Some of these are observed across multiple regions on the one day.
Today, Wednesday August 13, is Queensland's most well-known of all of its show holidays.
This one is a holiday to celebrate the state's annual agricultural show – the Ekka.
It's sometimes called 'People's Day' or is referred to as the 'show holiday' or, because it usually falls on a Wednesday, as 'Ekka Wednesday'.
The Ekka, otherwise known as the Queensland Agricultural Show, is the largest of Queensland's agricultural shows, often attracting 400,000 visitors a year as well as 10,000 animals and 21,000 competition entrants.
It's held in August each year at the Brisbane Showgrounds and has been running annually since 1876, with a few exceptions.
Traditionally, it has provided an opportunity for Queenslanders from across the state to showcase livestock, horticulture, creative arts, and other talents.
One of its most celebrated traditions is its famous strawberry sundaes.
Ekka Wednesday is generally one of the busiest days of the entire show, with the Grand Parade being held.
Importantly, your eligibility for show holidays is dependent on where you work or go to school, not where you live.
Today's holiday applies to people within the Brisbane City Council area.
Show holidays vary around the state.
The Ekka show holiday in regions near Brisbane like Logan City, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and the Somerset Region was observed on Monday, August 11.
Residents of areas like Moreton Bay, Gladstone, Bundaberg and the Redlands also had a public holiday on Monday for the Ekka.
But in Ipswich, for example, the show holiday was held in May.
If the Ekka isn't your thing, many attractions like museums, galleries and markets will be running on Wednesday.
Many cafes, restaurants and bars will also be open.
It's best to check with each individual establishment before visiting, and be aware a public holiday surcharge may apply.
Many shops will also be open, but some will have reduced opening hours.
Depending on your employment arrangements, working on a public holiday like a show day may attract penalty rates.

Nikita Tszyu's new pre-fight diet has raised more than a few eyebrows after the Aussie star revealed it includes capsulised placenta and breast milk. Tszyu and his wife, Nikita Bedwell, who married in secret in January, welcomed their first child together in June - named Curiosity after a NASA Mars rover. While the name is unique, so is the way Tszyu is preparing for his fight against Lulzim Ismaili on August 20. Tszyu told Triple M Breakfast on Wednesday that turning to capsulated placenta and breast milk has given him 'a crazy amount of energy' and joked he's 'technically become a cannibal.' 'So, for those who don't know, I just had a baby. And my wife … we freeze-dried her placenta and I've been supplementing on her placenta recently … in tablet form,' Tszyu said. 'I've technically become a cannibal. It's actually like a superpower.' Triple M's Aaron Woods chimed in: 'They reckon breast milk is the best thing you can have! It's so clean.' Tszyu replied: 'Yeah, and it's delicious as well!' Drinking breast milk rose in popularity on the back of weightlifters who claimed they gained extra muscle when switching from full cream to natural breast milk. However, no substantial research into the claim has ever been done. That's because, scientifically, it doesn't make sense. The idea of building muscle largely comes down to protein intake and targeted exercise. And if that is the marker, consuming breast milk instead of cow's milk makes zero sense. For example, 100g of breast milk contains around 1g of protein, compared to 3.1g of protein in full cream milk. The only areas where it is significantly higher are in sugars and fat. As for the placenta claim, Tszyu is just the latest to try a practice that is becoming increasingly common. Stars such as Hilary Duff and Kourtney Kardashian have consumed their placenta – either in liquid or capsule form – after having children. The placenta is a temporary organ, and its sole purpose is to provide the baby with nutrients during pregnancy. And in recent years, placenta tablets – which are pills created by drying and grinding up the placenta into a powder, then encapsulating it – have boomed in popularity. Research is, however, limited on its effectiveness, but the BBC reported in 2015 that there are no proven benefits to consuming it and if anything, it could be harmful. But for Tszyu, he says he feels the difference. 'I've done tests with my sparring – days where I've had it and days where I haven't – and it feels like I got all this crazy amount of energy,' he told Triple M. The science on its benefits is still unclear, but regardless, it's safe to say Tszyu isn't leaving any stone unturned as he looks to improve his record to 13-0 when he takes on Lulzim Ismaili on August 20.

‘Put it in your gob': Albo delights crowd at Brisbane Ekka, continues tradition of awkward food snaps with sundae moment
Anthony Albanese has delighted crowds at the Ekka on the public show holiday, enjoying snaps and following the pollie tradition of awkwardly tucking into the food staples. The Prime Minister touched down at the landmark Brisbane agricultural show on Wednesday and quickly set about mingling with show attendees while flanked by photographers and his press team. Mr Albanese spent some time sampling the Ekka's delicacies – from Queensland-made honey to luscious bananas – and even tucked into a famous strawberry sundae as photographers captured the unflattering moment. But unlike in 2023 – when awkward snaps captured Mr Albanese taking a cautionary lick of the sundae's cream – he spent no time in enjoying the sweet treat. In video captured by The Courier Mail, Mr Albanese even jokingly gestured to an ABC reporter holding her own sundae to 'put it in your gob'. He then quipped: 'I had to for the interview!' Politicians who have graced the Ekka have followed a tradition of being snapped in unflattering moments while trying to eat. Most notably, former opposition leader Peter Dutton caused a stir by tearing into a dagwood dog in 2022. He revealed it prompted some outrageous messages. 'Most of my mates actually were pretty rapid-fire texting me like, 'WTF', but anyway, what do you do?' Mr Dutton joked on 2Day FM the following day. 'With the cameras there, I mean you can't eat it from the side because the sauce drips off and you do a Bill Shorten … so it leaves one angle and it's not a great one. 'There is no good angle, so you just accept your fate, right? But chewing from the side was definitely not an option.' Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie was snapped in a similar position with a dagwood dog but took it on the chin – even taking it tongue-in-cheek by making prints of her eating the show staple. Even outside of the show, politicians have always looked awkward trying to dine. Tony Abbott was infamously captured biting into a raw onion, Bill Shorten almost forgot how to eat a sausage and roll as he tried to tackle it sideways, while Malcolm Turnbull ate a meat pie with a knife and fork.

Wayne Carey's adult-only club move after toilet tryst controversy
Wayne Carey has landed back on Australian shores and the former AFL premiership star is reportedly set to make an eye-opening public return. The 54-year-old left the country with his family after finding himself embroiled in controversy over an alleged toilet tryst. Carey went viral in July after footage filmed at Toorak Cellars in Armadale, showed him following a woman out of a bathroom. Carey however is now set to make his first public appearance since the incident with the 272-game AFL great appearing at an adults-only club in Geelong. The After Dark Gentleman's Club is promoting a meet and greet session with Carey on August 15. 'Meet and greet with Wayne Carey,' the club promises on its Facebook page. 'Doors open from 8.30pm. Live entertainment all night.' Carey has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing over the alleged toilet tryst, with the Kangaroos legend saying it was a breach of privacy and 'slut shaming'. Carey and the woman in the video, marketing executive Kate Aston, both publicly said they are pursuing legal action after the video quickly spread across cyberspace. Aston said the scandal has taken an immense toll on her personal and professional life. 'What has happened to me could happen to anyone, and no one should have to go through what I have been put through – the damage, the speculation, the impact on my livelihood, all from the malicious actions of a small few,' Ms Aston, who has denied anything happened in the toilets, said. 'Overnight, from footage of me simply exiting a toilet at a bar, I've had my life turned upside down. 'From a professional perspective, my ability has been put into question which has had immediate financial repercussions, one that is costing me every day with the effects likely to be long term and irreversible … while I appear strong, those closest to me know that my suffering over recent days has been colossal.' Carey's ex-partner publicly mocked the retired footballer in another twist to the bizarre scandal. Kate Neilson couldn't help herself from taking a sly dig at her former partner when she re-enacted the viral video. Neilson posted a candid clip of herself walking out of a bathroom covering her face before her partner shortly exits the same bathroom while appearing to use his phone. The video on Neilson's Instagram stories included a duck emoji watermark. Carey's nickname during his football career was 'Duck'. The clip was set to the Bloodhound Gang's The Bad Touch hit. Neilson said she hoped the video was merely a misunderstanding. Carey, a great of the North Melbourne footy club, has a track record of incidents away from the playing arena. The most famous was his affair with former teammate Anthony Stevens' then-wife Kelli, which led to Carey's sacking from the Kangaroos. He has also been hit with indecent assault, domestic violence and misdemeanour battery allegations, along with issues with drugs and alcohol, and has been sacked from a number of media roles. Carey was in 2007 involved in a 'glassing' incident with Neilson. Neilson last year went public to refute claims Carey made about the incident, where he described reports as incorrect and 'ludicrous'. Neilson has always maintained: 'I can say with certainty the glass of wine was intentionally thrown into my face and smashed my mouth pretty bad.'
