Omnia Serves Authentic Lebanese Flavors in Hong Kong's Soho

Bloomberg02-08-2025
Despite Hong Kong's plethora of international cuisines, the flavors of the Middle East are sorely underrepresented. As someone who grew up in the Persian Gulf, I struggle to find places in town that serve kibbeh, manakeesh, shawarma and other regional staples. So I was especially eager to pay Omnia a visit when I heard a new Lebanese restaurant had recently opened its doors in Soho.
Omnia, which means 'wish' in Arabic, is run by chef and culinary entrepreneur Nadim Hamze, formerly of Sumac. Hamze promises to celebrate Lebanese culinary heritage and deliver 'soulfully satisfying' food with his latest dining venture, which opened in May.

Uncle Quek Elevates Singapore's Hawker Classics for Hong Kong Diners

As Singaporean expats here can attest, life in Hong Kong is a cycle of hope and disappointment when it comes to seeking out the flavors of our homeland. So when I heard that chef Barry Quek of Whey fame had opened a new, casual eatery where hawker classics like bak chor mee and hae mee would be offered, I made a reservation at Uncle Quek faster than one can say: 'Singaporean bak kut teh is better than Malaysian bak kut teh.' The bad news first: Uncle Quek's bak kut teh, the pork rib soup that's beloved in the region, is closer to the Malaysian style. That is, the soup is more herbal rather the peppery — a choice the chef told us was made for Hong Kongers' sensitive palates. Fortunately, everything else is fantastic, with a lineup that nails the original flavors of traditional dishes while elevating them beyond street food with richer and higher-quality ingredients.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific unveils deal to buy 14 Boeing jets

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific said Wednesday it would place a US$8.1-billion order for 14 Boeing jets, its first order with the American aircraft maker for 12 years. The airline has "exercised the purchase rights... to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft; and... secured the right to acquire up to seven additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft", it said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. The new order expects the aircraft to be delivered by 2034, according to a separate filing. Cathay Pacific made the announcement as it reported its attributable profit rose slightly to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million), benefiting from a pick-up in travel demand in Asia. Chair Patrick Healy heralded a "solid financial performance" in the filing. The company's passenger airlines, including Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express, have launched or announced 19 new destinations so far in 2025, with "more to come", he said. Cathay now flies to more than 100 passenger destinations globally, he added. However, the company warned that its lowcost airlines are facing short-term challenges as pick-up in bookings is "yet to return to normal levels". twa/reb/dan Sign in to access your portfolio
