Auburn players discuss the start of the NCAA Tournament Auburn has put its recent downward trend behind them and are now focused on the NCAA Tournament.
Winning the SEC Regular Season Championship and getting the top overall seed for the NCAA Tournament are great accomplishments. With that said, the Auburn Tigers know this team will be judged on what they do in March. After losing three of four games, there needs to be a sense of urgency for Auburn.
Johni Broome, Denver Jones, and Chad Baker-Mazara all spoke to the media on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's tournament action. Jones says that he is ready to hit the court.
'I feel like we are more motivated now as far as taking it one game at a time, and obviously we are trying to win that game and get to Sunday -- Saturday, sorry about that,' Jones said.
Jones added more when asked about being the number one seed despite losing in the SEC Tournament semifinals.
'I just know that when we ended up losing the SEC tournament, we ended up losing three of our last four games, I feel like we're just a little extra motivated going into March Madness,' Jones said.
Auburn has not made it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament since the 2019 Final Four run. The 2022 team led by Jabari Smith was upset by No. 10 seed Miami in the second round, and last year was upset by No. 13 seed Yale. The positive of losing on Saturday to the Volunteers was that it gave the Tigers some extra preparation time.
'Practice has been a little bit ramped up. We had an extra day of rest because we didn't play on Sunday. So we got to work on ourselves and just trying to find our identity again', Broome said.
Auburn knows what can happen in March. 'This tournament is March, so anybody can really beat anybody if you don't come focused and locked in and take people for granted,' Baker-Mazara said. 'So we gotta make sure we come in tomorrow and take care of our business.'
Alabama State is a guard-heavy team led by CJ Hines and Amarr Knox both averaging a little over 14 points per game. The Tigers have struggled with rebounding when met with physical teams that have size. Auburn should win by a large margin, but the focus needs to be there to not take these Hornets lightly.
The game will be televised by CBS and has an approximate tip-off time of 1:50 p.m. CT.

Auburn claims 4 more football national championships, including in 2004 when it didn't make BCS title game

Auburn is trying to catch up to Alabama in the race for claimed national championships. The Tigers announced Tuesday it will recognize themselves as nine-time football champions. The school had previously touted itself as a five-time national champion. But Auburn is no longer going to be humble, according to athletic director John Cohen. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history. Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation. Before Tuesday, Auburn claimed titles in 1913, 1957, 1983, 1993 and 2010. Now, titles in 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 are being added to the mix. You may remember the BCS existed in 2004, and Auburn did not play for the national championship. The Tigers were 12-0 but were third in the BCS rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma. After USC blew out the Sooners for the national championship, Auburn finished No. 2 in the final AP Top 25 with three of 65 first-place votes. The other 62 went to USC. The Tigers also finished second in the coaches poll. Auburn's feelings toward being excluded from the BCS title game that year are well-known at this point. You can understand why the Tigers want to claim a national title for that season. But you also have every right to laugh at that claim and recognize it as illegitimate. Pre-BCS titles are murkier, and why a school like Alabama claims 18 national titles. Twelve of those championships came before the BCS and subsequent College Football Playoff existed. For example, Alabama's 1941 title is claimed from a 9-2 season that saw it atop the Houlgate System's rankings. Auburn is also using similar logic. For example, the school's new 1914 title is via the James Howell Power Ratings, though at least Auburn went 8-0-1 that season and didn't allow an opponent to score. If you're worked up about Auburn's decision to suddenly claim four more titles, you can take solace that the Tigers' chances at an official 10th national title don't appear to be very realistic anytime soon. The Tigers are 66-1 to win the 2025 title at BetMGM and have the 10th-best odds to win the SEC.

Oh man, the Colts are really gonna start Daniel Jones in Week 1

Chris Ballard's job is on the line. The general manager of the Indianapolis Colts is in his ninth season as the architect behind the Colts' roster. He has a single playoff win to show for it. That leaves him with one of the hottest seats among NFL executives this fall. Anything short of a playoff berth could end Ballard's tenure in Indianapolis. After an 17-17 record the last two seasons, it's clear things need to change for the Colts to climb back to the top of the AFC South. The quarterback ready to bring that change under similarly embattled head coach Shane Steichen? Daniel by-God Jones. On one hand, this isn't a surprise. Jones seemed to have an inside edge throughout training camp when it came to working with the team's starters. Richardson has been an injury risk throughout his brief NFL career and missed 19 games the last two seasons. He made it five plays into the 2025 preseason before suffering a dislocated finger. When healthy, he's a high variance game-changer in ways that were more bad than good last fall and finished 2024 with a 47 percent completion rate. On the other hand, this is a surprise because it's Daniel Jones. The injury concerns that haunt Richardson? Jones missed 16 games between 2021 and 2023 due to neck and knee injuries. The performance issues that threaten to leave a deep offense stuck in neutral? Jones has thrown 10 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions in his last 16 games and was benched for Tommy DeVito -- Tommy DeVito! -- due in equal parts to poor play and concerns that an injury suffered late in a meaningless season could trigger $23 million in guarantees for 2025. Jones brings a higher floor to the Colts offense than Richardson. He has more playoff wins than Tua Tagovailoa thanks to the 2022 season that saw the New York Giants establish a run-heavy attack that asked Jones to throw the third-shortest average pass distance in the NFL. That worked until it didn't. When head coach Brian Daboll had to turn up the downfield throws as a weakened rushing game left his offense off-schedule Jones' interception rate rose from a league-best 1.1 percent in 2022 to 2.6 over the last two seasons. That means he's bringing a lower ceiling than Richardson, who plays football like someone dropped a jar of Superballs on a concrete floor. Richardson's offense was predicated on more downfield throws than anyone else in the league. His 12.2 yards per air target were nearly three full yards deeper than second-place Trevor Lawrence on the 2024 NFL leaderboard. When things go right, Richardson is capable of doing things maybe three or four of his peers can do on a given play. Richardson is a high variance quarterback. The Colts knew this when they made him the fourth overall pick after a stunning rise up draft boards in 2023. Starting Jones over him -- the steadier option in a way that hasn't mattered the last two seasons -- is a shrugging admission that Indianapolis' coaching staff can't fix him, even 2.5 years in to his Colts career. Jones got the Giants to the Divisional Round of the postseason with Saquon Barkley in the backfield. If he can get his new team to nine wins with Jonathan Taylor doing all the work in this group project, it could be enough to save Ballard and Steichen's jobs. This doesn't mean we've seen the last of Richardson. Jones has been shuffled out of the lineup due to injury and underwhelming play before. But his leash may be longer than expected because what he does well -- checking down for surefire gains and keeping his offense churning -- is so much different than what Richardson does well -- chucking a ball 70 yards off his back foot or putting his head down and trying to run through three linebackers at a time. Richardson is a glass engine, impressive and impractical, waiting to turn internal combustion into an external one. But he's undoubtedly got more to offer in a league that values gunslinging, mobile quarterbacks more than ever. The Colts, to their credit, at least have the awareness to say "hell, we can't figure him out either." While that's not an official statement, that's what you get when you name Daniel Jones QB1 over the guy you drafted fourth overall less than three years ago.

Francis Ngannou uses monkey adage to pick who would've won Jon Jones-Tom Aspinall fight

Francis Ngannou has been staying "low key" while dealing with a few recent personal tragedies. While staying out of the limelight, Ngannou has been training the entire time and hopes to fight before the end of the year or early 2026. Deontay Wilder is a potential option for him in the boxing ring, but on the MMA side, things aren't so clear. Reflecting back on what could have been in a mega-fight against Jon Jones, Ngannou said that was a matchup thatt was dead in the water, especially when he made the move to PFL. "(That fight) never got off the ground," Ngannou said on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "For sure, the UFC don't want any co-promotion stuff. I think even Turki (Alalshikh) tried to make that fight happen." After beating Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, Jon Jones decided to retire and vacate the heavyweight title instead of unifying against then-interim champ Tom Aspinall. However, when the news of a potential card at the White House, Jones immediately showed interest and put his name back in the UFC's anti-doping testing pool. Ngannou believes the whole thing was a negotiating play by Jones. "Retirement doesn't mean anything," Ngannou said. "If he decides tomorrow he's fighting, then that retirement is void. It means nothing, nobody would stop him if he keeps training. That doesn't change anything. It might be his strategy, or he might just had enough, which is understandable. I wasn't expecting it at that time or in this way. Having this announcing retirement in the middle of a conversation like this, it seems more like a negotiation tactic or something." If the fight between Jones and Aspinall did come together, Ngannou believes "Bones" would have found a way to get the job done, as he has always managed to do throughout his entire career. "Tom is young, he's very explosive," Ngannou said. "He's young, hungry, but you know what they said: They said young monkey is fast, but old monkey knows the way. I think we can all agree that Jon knows the way for the victory."
