Own car or reliable public transport? Photo of S'poreans holding up opposite wishes at NDP goes viral
TikTok screengrab/ CNA SINGAPORE: Many Singaporeans filled out placards where they expressed their wishes and hopes during last Saturday's National Day Parade (NDP) celebration for the city-state's 60th birthday. Some of them were caught on camera and featured in a video on Channel NewsAsia's ( CNA ) social media channels. A man and a woman seated near each other with seemingly opposite wishes caught the attention of a local Reddit user, who promptly shared a screenshot of them on the platform. While the woman's placard reads, 'I want to own a car,' the man wrote that he wants to 'have a reliable and affordable public transport system.' Between the two of them sits another young man. Below the screenshot are lyrics from Kit Chan's NDP song 'Home,' 'When there are troubles to go through.' @channelnewsasia Complete the sentence: I want to … #NDP2025 #SG60 ♬ Funny video 'Carmen Prelude' Arranging weakness(836530) – yo suzuki(akisai) Many Reddit users have since commented on the photo, with one simply writing, 'Absolutely perfect camera direction. ' ' Give this cameraman a raise!' another wrote. 'The irony lolol,' wrote a commenter, while another joked that 'the guy in the middle should get up so the two can be together.' A Reddit user quipped that the man between the two placards 'must represent' the Transport Ministry and the Land Transport Authority. 'Stuck between two opposing demands,' they added. ' Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow… slowly sinking into his seat…,' another joked. 'Honestly, no car nvm, but please ensure a reliable and proficient public transport system,' a commenter weighed in. 'This man is a hero,' observed another, while a commenter chimed in with, 'Shout out to this guy .' The woman had supporters of her own, with one writing, ' I mean she's not wrong.' Other commenters on the post also pointed out different placards from the CNA video that made them laugh. 'There's another person's card that read 'I want to not be on camera again' and the cheeky cameraman showed it for just like a few seconds and it made me LOL.' TikTok screengrab/ CNA 'The kid with the PSLE one is funny too, haha.' TikTok screengrab/ CNA 'I could only relate to the girl with the sign that said I want to eat mee siam,' wrote a Reddit user. TikTok screengrab/ CNA A commenter observed, 'This wish list is a new one for NDP, get to show it to the whole country,' but added that they 'hope the cameraman will not get reprimanded.' /TISG Read also: Walid Abdullah posts wish list for Singapore's 60th birthday, including less use of ChatGPT for younger S'poreans () => { const trigger = if ('IntersectionObserver' in window && trigger) { const observer = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => { => { if ( { lazyLoader(); // You should define lazyLoader() elsewhere or inline here // Run once } }); }, { rootMargin: '800px', threshold: 0.1 }); } else { // Fallback setTimeout(lazyLoader, 3000); } });

Taiwanese influencer finds mushrooms growing in air bridge at Changi Airport
IG screengrab/thisiskenyoung SINGAPORE: Ken Young(楊超然), a social media influencer and the host of a popular podcast in Taiwan, recently highlighted something he found growing out of a passenger boarding bridge in Singapore's Changi Airport. 'You know it's humid in Singapore when you see mushrooms growing on air bridge,' he wrote in a video he posted on Instagram on Sunday (Aug 10). While he doesn't appear on camera, his voice can be heard as he laughs at the mushrooms, which his wife Ivy, a former flight attendant, is pointing to. IG screengrab/ @thisiskenyoung 'First time seeing it on the plane bridge,' he wrote in the caption in Mandarin. Mr Young tagged Changi Airport's IG account as well. The post has since gotten more than 3,400 likes, and many commenters were as amused as the post author. 'The world's first… Just having a different experience…' quipped one. 'Singapore is a garden city! True to the name,' joked another. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ken Young (@thisiskenyoung) And like Mr Young, a number of IG users tagged Changi Airport in the comments. ' @changiairport please do something about this!!' one pleaded. At least one commenter took a more serious tone, however, writing, 'Going to Singapore during the rainy season, that humidity makes people feel drowned on land.' When the video was shared on Reddit, commenters were not surprised, with some pointing out how quickly these mushrooms grow in damp environments. One noted that they 'will pop out overnight. One night your air conditioner is leaking and BOOM the next day your wooden door has mushrooms.' 'Yeah. These mushrooms tend to appear almost spontaneously, so it's not that easy to avoid their emergence, especially in a humid country,' another agreed. Some noted that with how well the Changi Airport Group guards the airport's stellar reputation, they think they've seen the video already, and the mushrooms have been disposed of. 'I wouldn't be surprised if they're no longer there as I write this,' one wrote. 'I experienced this at my workplace. These mushrooms tend to appear almost spontaneously and randomly overnight, so it is just sheer bad luck that they grew here,' chimed in a Reddit user. Spill some water on a corner of the carpet and you can see a mushroom sprout overnight,' another wrote. Others poked fun at the whole situation, joking that the mushrooms would make a good pre-flight snack and that the 'short form of Singapore is Spore,' after all. /TISG Read also: Customer shocked to open a can of mouldy mushroom soup she bought from the store — Classic editor () => { const trigger = if ('IntersectionObserver' in window && trigger) { const observer = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => { => { if ( { lazyLoader(); // You should define lazyLoader() elsewhere or inline here // Run once } }); }, { rootMargin: '800px', threshold: 0.1 }); } else { // Fallback setTimeout(lazyLoader, 3000); } });

He skipped school to join a boy band reality show, but WhyLucas has no regrets
He skipped school to join a boy band reality show, but WhyLucas has no regrets By CNA/Mak Jia Kee 22-year-old Lucas Wang, known as WhyLucas, began producing music in his teens. What started on Garageband turned into a serious pursuit of songwriting. In 2024, the business student took leave from school to compete in Chuang Asia 2, a boy band survival show filmed in Thailand, where he was the only Singaporean contestant. Though he didn't make the final group, his parents supported him at the finale, and he gained fans across Asia. Back home, he's focused on going solo. 'Before going to Chuang, I would always think, 'Can I do this?' Now I ask, 'Do I want to do this?'' he said, adding that a highlight of his experience was realising he has the strong support of family and friends. Next Story
