Liew: Avoid over-commercialisation in Sabah's tourism development

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's approach to tourism development must avoid the pitfalls of over-commercialisation, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
Liew also cautioned against uncontrolled visitor numbers that could harm the environment or cultural assets over time.
"As one of the speakers mentioned, we should focus on value rather than volume when it comes to tourism.
"We do not want to experience over-tourism or over-marketing. I read a book that warns tourism players and countries not to oversell their tourism packages, as it may not yield the kind of positive effect they are hoping for," she said after launching the Community-Based Tourism (CBT) Expo at a shopping mall here.
As such, the ministry is collecting visitor data and ensuring that the community is involved to avoid the negative impacts of mass tourism.
To mitigate the adverse effects of mass tourism, Liew said the state would focus on sustainable tourism growth that benefits rural communities economically, including helping them rise out of poverty.
She said that CBT is gaining traction in several districts beyond Kota Kinabalu.
"Some very popular districts, when international tourists visit, they return home and talk about it. That attracts more visitors. We are now seeing growth in places like Tuaran, Tenom, and Kota Belud as well," she said.
She attributed the success to strong collaboration with local communities, particularly in converting homes or products into tourist-friendly offerings.
"When we cooperate with local people, assisting them in converting their houses or products into tourism attractions, it also brings in elements such as cleanliness, safety, and food hygiene.
"They understand that to participate in CBT, they must meet these expectations, and I find them responding positively."
In 2023, the 18 active CBT districts in Sabah generated RM6 million. This figure rose to an estimated RM7 million in 2024.
"Our goal moving forward is to increase income through tourism to levels above the poverty line index.
"We are also working closely with the Department of Statistics to assess how CBT contributes to gross domestic product and whether it effectively lifts communities out of poverty."
Also present were the state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, and Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer, Julinus Jeffrey Jimit.

Indonesian rescuers try to reach Brazilian after fall at volcano

Hikers flock to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, for its stunning panoramic views. (File pic) JAKARTA : Indonesian rescuers tried Tuesday to reach a Brazilian tourist who fell down a ravine at a volcano popular with hikers after spotting her unmoving body, authorities said. The woman identified by relatives and media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, which neighbours Bali. Authorities think Marins fell and believe they sighted her on Monday but rescuers were held back because of bad weather. 'Yesterday morning we detected the victim. We deployed a team to the location, but we were hampered by the very steep terrain and the foggy weather,' Muhammad Hariyadi, head of Lombok's Mataram Search and Rescue Office, told AFP on Tuesday. 'When we detected her using a drone, she was not moving.' Rescuers said they were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a helicopter in a bid to reach the Brazilian, who was backpacking around Southeast Asia. 'One group is monitoring the evacuation using a thermal drone. The second team is doing the manual evacuation process with a rope as the main tool,' said Hariyadi. 'This morning around 50 rescuers have been dispatched, and we plan to send a helicopter team to scour the location.' An Instagram account set up by family and friends to call for her urgent rescue has amassed more than one million followers. 'Hang in there, Juliana! Help is on the way!' read a post on the account. The Brazilian embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia. Lombok island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island including one on the mountain.

Sabah urged to tap into China's 1.4 bln market at Henan Trade Fair

Frankie Liew KOTA KINABALU (June 29): President of the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC), Datuk Frankie Liew, has called on Sabah entrepreneurs to boldly venture into the vast China market, which boasts a population of 1.416 billion people. He noted that Sabah is home to many unique, national-level specialty products with strong potential to shine in China's consumer landscape. In a press statement issued on Sunday, Liew highlighted the upcoming Henan Investment and Trade Fair, scheduled to take place from September 26 to 28, 2025, as a golden opportunity for Sabah businesses to access and connect with the China market. He shared that the organizers have allocated 30 exhibition booths to the Sabah China Economic Conference, describing it as a rare and valuable opportunity. He urged interested entrepreneurs to seize this chance to actively participate, establish connections with China business counterparts, and showcase Sabah's specialty products in China. At the same time, this platform could help attract China investments into Sabah and foster mutually beneficial, win-win partnerships, thereby contributing to the economic growth of Sabah and Malaysia as a whole. The Henan Investment and Trade Fair (Henan Fair) is the only economic and trade event in Henan Province officially approved by the China government and hosted by the Henan Provincial Government. It has successfully held 14 editions to date and is recognized as Henan's largest, highest-level, and most influential international economic and trade event. The 14th Henan Fair attracted high-level delegations from 24 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across China, and saw participation from 29,000 business delegates representing 43 countries and regions. The fair featured over 20 economic and trade events, including the opening ceremony and a high-level forum, as well as both comprehensive and specialized exhibition areas. The exhibition covered 60,000 square meters, with more than 600 top-quality domestic and international companies participating — setting new records for participation, exhibition space and product diversity. The 15th Henan Fair will take place in Zhengzhou from September 25 to 28. With the theme 'Sharing New Opportunities for Development, Building a New Highland of Openness', the fair will promote two-way openness, domestic-international linkages, and a combined focus on investment, trade and consumption. It aims to support the building of a unified national market and serve as a strategic hub for dual domestic and international economic circulation. A series of key economic and trade activities will be held, including industry matching, project negotiations, exhibitions, and international and regional cooperation forums. Major highlights will include the official opening ceremony, a session on New Opportunities under the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area Version 3.0, the China (Henan) Enterprises Go to Africa Forum, industry-specific dialogues on topics such as AI-powered industrial development, innovative pharmaceuticals and international cooperation, and new retail development. The total planned exhibition space is approximately 65,000 square meters, featuring a comprehensive exhibition area showcasing provincial strengths and leading industries, international and domestic cooperation zones. There are seven specialized exhibition areas: New energy vehicles, Food, Pharmaceuticals and medical devices, Digital economy, New retail, High-quality export goods, and Imported specialty products Liew also mentioned that on September 27, participants will have the opportunity to join a cultural and business tour to Luoyang, Kaifeng, and the renowned Shaolin Temple, offering both business insights and cultural enrichment. Likely Sabah has highest number of GLCs in Malaysia

Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: DATUK John Lo's assertion that Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) are bleeding state coffers is undeniably accurate. Shockingly, successive Sabah governments have been losing at least RM100 million monthly just to sustain second grade politicians. Sabah likely has the highest number of GLCs compared to other states in Malaysia. These companies often maintain bloated boards with 10 to 12 directors and each receiving monthly allowances ranging from RM6,000 to RM24,000. This exorbitant structure drains at least RM100 million in Sabah public funds – a staggering and unsustainable burden. Just last week the Sabah Government added yet another GLC – the 'Blue Economy Council' as reported by your papoer on June 17, 2025. More critically, these GLCs undermine existing state departments, such as the Fisheries Department, which already operate under well-defined legal frameworks and possess specialised expertise in their respective fields. While it is understandable that the state must ensure its leaders are adequately supported, as Lo rightly emphasised: 'Enough is enough'. The unchecked expansion of GLCs and their excessive financial demands must be reined in before they further cripple Sabah's finances.
