Pune: The Environmental Status Report published on Tuesday showed deterioration in air quality under PMC areas, with fewer good and satisfactory days and more moderate and very poor days, as far as AQI PM10 levels are concerned, in 2024-25 compared to 2023-24.
The data, published by Pune Municipal Corporation, showed Pune had 52 good days in 2024-25, compared to 79 in 2023-24, while the satisfactory days were 137 in 2024-25 against 145 in the previous year. The bad days went up to 3 in 2024-25 compared to just one in 2023-24. The moderate days also increased from 140 in 2023-24 to 174 in 2024-25 in a year's time, as per the data.
"Use of fossil fuels and increase in vehicular population could have caused decline in air quality," said Mangesh Dighe, head of PMC's environment department.

"Efforts are needed to increase the use of public transport. The administration should also create more awareness about vehicular pollution. The use of personal vehicles should be discouraged," said Vaishali Patkar, an environmentalist.
Urban planners said increase in urbanisation and a real estate boom driven by redevelopment of old properties were contributing to an increase in pollution. Also, concreting of roads was adversely impacting the environment.

Citizens said open burning of waste was leading to deterioration in air quality in the city. Baner resident Atul Kher said instances of burning in the open were causing health problems. "Instances of burning of waste along nullahs and rivers should be curbed," he said.
"The promotion of green-field citizens should be on the cards. Densification near public transport facilities like the Metro should also be done on priority.
But while doing so, the administration must ensure that the allied civic infrastructure is built simultaneously," said Ramchandra Gohad, a senior urban planner.
The ESR data also showed that the civic areas generated 2,100 tonnes of trash per day in 2023-24, which increased to 2,350 tonnes in 2024-25.
Usage of solar power went up nearly two times in a year's time. Citizens consumed 166,513 KW of solar power, out of which 61% was used by domestic users and housing societies, the data said. The data also showed that garbage collection increased by around 150 tonnes per day.

Citizens demand halt to digging on Taljai hills for cement road

Pune: Environmentalists have raised serious objections to the ongoing construction of a cement concrete (CC) road on a walking trail within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits on Taljai hill. The civic body has reportedly dug a 1-1.5-metre-wide stretch to construct the road, drawing criticism for the ecologically-damaging excavation work in a sensitive natural habitat. Citizens demand halt to digging on Taljai hills for cement road The 108-acre forest patch where the construction is taking place falls within the municipal limits and is part of a designated nature habitat. Activists fear that this is part of a growing trend of encroachment and unplanned development that threatens Pune's remaining green spaces. Citing Pune's rich natural and cultural heritage, activists pointed out that unchecked urbanisation in the past two decades has severely impacted the city's environment. Issues such as air pollution, shrinking forest cover, water scarcity, and poor waste management have become increasingly serious. They urged PMC to take strict legal action against those responsible for the digging and dumping, and to restore the disturbed sections of the hill with eco-friendly materials. Adding to the concern, debris from the excavation has been dumped in surrounding areas, damaging shrubs and trees. Some native plant species have also been destroyed due to the heavy machinery used for the work. A PMC road department official said, 'The work involves building a cement road to ensure safe and durable access for pedestrians. Care is being taken to minimise environmental damage. We are not constructing a wide road for vehicles, but a narrow concrete path to make walking easier during all seasons.' Environmental scientist Dr Sachin Punekar, president of the Biospheres organisation, has submitted a formal representation to PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, requesting him to stop the digging work to protect the hill's biodiversity. 'This trail lies inside a forested area of the hill and is not used by vehicles. There is no justification for building a concrete road here,' he said. Dr Punekar said the Pachgaon-Parvati (Taljai) hill is rich in biodiversity and home to small animals, birds and insects living in the scrub forests. 'This kind of unscientific construction has disrupted natural water streams and harmed the habitat. The work must be stopped immediately, and the damaged ecosystem restored using natural materials like gravel and soil,' he added. Girish Kamble, a regular visitor to Taljai for morning walk, said, 'I've been walking here every morning for years. The natural trail was more peaceful and connected to nature. With concrete, it feels less like a hill and more like a city street.'

BDA frees up nearly 5 acres of govt land in week-long eviction drive

Bhubaneswar: The enforcement squad of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) on Thursday carried out an eviction drive in Pandra to clear govt land of unauthorized structures and encroachments. During the drive, officials cleared 2.6 acres of land by demolishing 300ft of boundary wall, nine tin sheds, two bathrooms and 100ft of bamboo fence. "The eviction at Pandra was completed today. We faced some amount of opposition from the locals, but it was largely a peaceful drive," BDA's liaison officer Subharnshu Mohanty said. The move was part of BDA's week-long anti-encroachment drive carried out in several parts of the city to free up valuable govt land of encroachment. In the past week, BDA's central eviction monitoring committee, with the help of local police, carried out back-to-back eviction drives at Lingipur and Sisupalgarh areas and freed up nearly three acres of govt land. At Pandra, the general administration department had identified around 2.6 acres of land occupied by encroachers. "The department made a requisition and we carried out the drive accordingly. Now govt signboards have been installed at the site to ensure that it is not encroached upon," Mohanty added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo Similarly, at Lingipur, the rural development department identified around 2.3 acres of land which were encroached upon. Accordingly, BDA officials demolished various structures, including houses, shops, staircases, hoardings, steel railings and boundary walls. Officials said that the eviction drive at Lingipur was carried out to facilitate the construction of a road from Lingipur filling station to Nuagaon filling station. Now that the drive is completed, the rural development department will take up the road work, sources said. At Sishupalgarh, the eviction drive was conducted for constructing a road and a drain for a major housing colony in the area. During the drive, six cement platforms, a building, six shops and houses and 18 tin houses were demolished and cleared. "Bhubaneswar does have a lot of valuable govt land which is encroached upon. It is imperative that the govt should identify these places and clear the encroachment so that it could be used for public purposes," Pitambar Behera, a retired govt employee, said.
